Destination Enfield: A driving and walking tour
The town of Enfield, approximately six miles square, spreads across a valley of rolling hills, ponds, steams, woodlands, residential homes and farms, and a school. It is located approximately
5 miles west of the City of Ithaca. It has a mean elevation of 500 to 700 feet above Cayuga Lake, which can be viewed from various locations on Harvey Hill, Enfield Center, and Connecticut
Hill roads. Five Mile (Enfield Creek) leads into the suth of the town into a gorge in the upper protion of Robert H. Treman State Park. The area we call Enfield was first settled in
1804 and officially registered as a town on March 16, 1821.
Enfield has always been an agricultural town. In 1875 there were 318 operating farms. By 1990 there were only 90 operating farms. There are approximately 159 barns located in Enfield.

On Route 327, the lower park is in the Town of Ithaca and the upper park is in Enfield. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where
visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park. This Glen was owned by Robert Henry and Laura Treman who in 1920 gave the area to New
York State with the stipulation that it be preserved as a public park free to all visitors. Located also in the park are two historical sites: C.C.C. Camp operated during the Depression
from 1933 – 1941. A gristmill built in 1838-39 by Jared Treman, grandfather to RH Treman. The Finger Lakes Trail runs through the park.
Stone House – Stone House Road – private residence
The Old Stone House was built in 1822 by Charles and Keturah Woodward and is probably the oldest remaining building in Enfield.

John and Elizabeth Nobles purchased Military Lot 73 in 1809, and settled on the land with their, Timothy, Charles and Squire, a year later. The Noble Farmhouse was built in 1883 by
Anson Nobles, great-grandson of John and Elizabeth. This home stands on the original foundation of the first homestead built in 1825.
Stevenson Preserve – Trumbulls Corners Road

The Stevenson Preserve, Military Lot 68, (83) acres of the Finger Lakes Land Trust is a diverse, “old growth” forest with some areas of original stand density The Preserve was donated
by Elizabeth Stevenson Bennett. Several white pines are estimated to be 150 years old and hemlocks estimated to be 150-200 years old. The Finger Lakes Trail runs through the preserve.

Three story building (including basement) on the corner of Enfield Main and Enfield Center Roads.
This was the original Presbyterian Church built in 1935-36 and located on the lot in front of the Presbyterian Cemetery (south). Jervis Langdon (Mark Twain’s [Samuel Clemen’s] father
n’ law was a Trustee of this church.
In the mid-1870’s this building was purchased by John Wortman and moved to its present location. It has served as a store and undertakers business for the Wortman, Wright, McFall and
Newhart families. It was also used as a town voting location and community recreational hall.
Methodist Church – Enfield Center Road West

This church building was moved from Bostwick Corners (south) in 1876. The church was established in 1835. It is still actively used.
VanMarter Hotel – Enfield Main Road, west side – private residence
This hotel/tavern was operated by Elizabeth and Aaron VanMarter, was located in Enfield Centre. Travelers not only used this hotel as an over night rest stop but, the town rented it
as a place to conduct town business and elections. Around 1875 the hotel changed hands to Moses L. Harvey - "Harvey Hotel". Sometime between 1893 and 1894 the hotel again changed
hands to Frank Teeter "Teeter Hall. The last recorded use for the hotel was in 1922. The hotel was noted for its many dances held on the "floating" dance floor.
Community Building/ Fire Hall – Enfield Main Road, west side
Contact information
This was the first Fire Hall in the town, built in 1948-49. The new Fire Hall is located northwest of here and built in 1988. The Fire Company was organized in 1947-48.
Grange Hall – Enfield Main Road, west side
Contact information
This Grange Hall was building in 1925-26. The Enfield Valley Grange (EVG) No. 295 was organized February 4, 1875. Enfield was the seventh Grange to be organized in Tompkins county.
This is building is still used by the Grange of Enfield and as a community building. As of 1995, Enfield Valley Grange is the only grange left in Tompkins County that owns and maintains
a building.
Baptist Church – Enfield Main road, west side

The first church organized in Enfield was the Baptist in 1817. The congregation met in houses and the Woodard School until they built their own church in 1842. It was originally located
on the east side of Enfield Main Road, but was moved in 1881, perhaps to avoid the creek. The Baptist church built a new church building in 2004, but still maintains the old church building.

The town hall (west) in the north section consists of a meeting room and a town storage room. It was built in 1966, and expanded to the south in 197677. Across the Road on the east
side of Enfield Main Road, are two low rectangular wooden structures, which are now used for storage but used to be the town hall and barn. The smaller building was the "Pig's Ear",
a men's social club that was purchased by the town in 1923, moved from Enfield Center Road West and enlarged. It still has builtin election booths inside. The larger building was put
up in 1930.

Located on Route 327 on the west side of Military Lot 53 patented and delivered to Derrick Hanson in 1790. The original site of the First Permanent Settlers of 1804, Judah and Lydia
Chase Baker, and Enfield Christian Church (1821 – 1938) is located directly across the road. Enfield’s only school, Enfield Elementary and general store – Valley Korners is located north
of here.
