HomeMy WebLinkAboutflood of 1935 enfield and surround area scrapbook historian collection (3)6 G rl- S I i 1 odd Incident js Reported By CCC Men An unverified report of a woman who gave birth to an In- fant while being rescued from her west side home during last ] night's disaster was made today by Civilian Conservation Corps men who turned out 216 strong as a rescue squadron. The rescuers were unable to give the woman's name, and no such case was admitted to any Ithaca hospital. The CCC men, who worked throughout the downtown "flats" on assignment from police, also declared they rescued a city fire- man who was swept off his feet by the stiff current while trying to cross Fulton Street. The man was unidentified. A man in the South Aleadow Street section was attempting to get to his barn to release some cattle when he went down in the flood, and a CCC detail leader named Swartout came to his rescue. Company 1205, quartered at the Morse Chain Works, was the company that turned out on re- quest of the police. Working under direction of Capt. Edward T. Owens, camp commander, they rescued more than 75 families and took them to the camp bar- racks where they were given shelter for the night and break- fast this morning. More than 100 women and children were among those given lodging. On one CCC detail, five women In a car on South meadow Street bridge were caved from drown- ing. Within a very few minutes after their rescue, the water went over the top of their car. A detail of the CCC boys was atiji on assignment to the police thin tnornine. Water Supply Not Af fected By Downpour The water supply of the city was reported today as completely satis- factory despite the flood. No particular damage was re- ported. The water was stated to be sanitary and wholesome. A New York State health inspector happened to be in the city, and after careful checking with local officials, he reported everything satisfactory.
