INTERLAKEN - Bids submitted
by firms willing to contract for a
Part of the village's new $175,000
firehouse project were opened
Thursday by Project Engineer
Chuck Franzese of Hunt Engineers.
Mayor Thelma M. Peabody said
today that she was "encouraged" by
the bids, submitted by companies
hoping to land a contract in one of
four different categories.
Franzese said today the low bids
total $155,196, about $3,600 above the
project budget. Franzese said the
figure is "within reason," and said
both project and village officals are
"pleased these are figures that can
be grasped."
The one-story, metal firehouse
will be constructed south of the
village along Route 96. It will re-
place the old two story structure at
Main St. and Railroad Ave. that was
build in the early part of the cen-
tury. Village officials say the old
firehouse is a hazard and should he
condemned.
Several months ago when the vil-
lage originally accepted bids to con-
struct a cement block stucture with
brick facing, the bids exceeded the
project budget by more than
$100,000, village clerk Kathleen M.
Greule said today. She said
switching to a smaller, metal struc-
ture, similar to the Romulus fire-
house, brings the cost down to wha
the village can afford.
Greule said the project is possibl
because of a $166,250 Farmer'
Home Administration Loan. Greul
said the new firehouse is importar
to the village and that the old fir(
house is a safety hazard.
"The old firehouse is in d(
teriorating condition and needs to b
torn down," Greule said. She sai
the village's six pieces of fire equil
ment are being kept at three loc.
tions because of a lack of space a
the old firehouse. The new structur
will have room for all six pieces
fire equipment, Greule said.
Franzese said he hoped U
project could begin in May and I
completed within four months.
