says the fire company
asks too much
In response to several letters in
The Journal Dec. 1, I am one of the
members of the public that attended
the meeting of the Enfield Town
Board when there was not enough
seating for the public. The only
support I heard for the 1984 budget
was by the fire company members
and their wives.
One of the letter -writers refers to
dust control as being ludicrous. If he
lived on a gravel road he would feel
differently. What is ludicrous is the
sum of money demanded by the fire
company to support what is basical-
ly a social club. It seems to me that
the firehouse is maintained more as
a place to drink beer, play cards,
etc. than as a place to store fire-
fighting equipment.
I think we need a fire company but
they should not expect the public to
Provide more than a basic operating
budget. Any other money should
come through their own efforts.
Some adjoining towns have fire
companies that seem to do rather
well with budgets of public money
that are less than one-half the loCal
fire company has demanded. A 33
Percent raise in one year would
seem to be enough.
