I was shocked to read a recent
letter to The Journal by the Enfield
resident criticizing the voluntary
fire departments for being a liability
and a social club. There has been too
much misunderstanding by the pub-
lic and lack of support.
These men and women give up
tiwe off from full-time jobs and
spend a lot of their own money and
time to buy all the expensive equip-
ment, build their fire houses, spend
a lot of time taking lessons so they
can do a better job, and they ask
only for support of the people they
protect.
I have seen our fire company
spend a whole night in mums -26 -
degree temperature fighting a stub-
born structure fire, then return to
the station, getting equipment ready
for the next call, then putting in a
full day at their jobs. They will jump
out of bed and rush to help anyone in
any emergency. They do it not for
gain, but for dedication to help
people in distress.
We have called our local am-
bulance in the night for two emer-
gencies. They came quickly, worked
efficiently and with compassion and
did it for free. There is no organiza-
tion anywhere that does so much for
people as the fire, emergency and
ambulance people.
Sure, some of them drink mod-
erately, too much, or not at all but
so does the general public. They put
your welfare above their own. God
bless them.
