Enfield firefighters say

The Town of Enfield will have to
find another means of fire protec-
tion after Dec. 31 if the town board
does not make a better budget offer,
Enfield Fire Chief Denny Hubbell
said today.
Last night, the Enfield Fire Com-
pany refused to accept what the
town board said was their final
budget offer of $36,000, Hubbell said.
Two months ago, the fire comany
proposed a figure of $49,000. After
two months of negotiation, they cut
their request to $41,000 and will not
cut it further, Hubbell said. He
explained that the company will
close the Enfield fire station Dec.
31,if an agreement is not reached.
"For years, the fire company has
been supplementing its operating
budget through fundraisers," Hub-
bell said, "but the cost of equipment
and maintenence has risen
enormously in the past few years.
We've been paying for things the
taxpayers should be paying for, and
it's getting too rough. The town
board presumes we'll continue to do
what we've been doing in the past,
but we're not going to."

Hubbell said that he guarantees
the company will go through with
the ultimatum. "I don't think the
town board cares, or they would be
taking us a lot more seriously."
