HomeMy WebLinkAboutmemorial efvc_0006This year The Enfield Volunteer Fire Company was saddened by the loss of life member Charles Sheffield at the age of 95. Charlie had served his community as a member of the EVFC for 56 years in a number of different capacities! His memorial service was held in the fire station where he had spent so many hours! Charlie's passing got me thinking of other members that had passed on! Just last year we lost two members, Larry Lanning with 42 years of service and Art Covert with 41 years of service, these three men had a total of 139 years of service to this community as members of the EVFC! ................... Searching our roster of active members we find that presently they have a collective total of 846 years of service to date, that number increases by 53 each year! We place memorial flags on the graves of Charter members and Life members yearly; Sixty nine flags with an average of MORE than twenty years' service is over 1,300 years by the deceased! 139 years, 846 years, 1300+ years equals over 2,285 years of service. There is no way to total the number of years served by those that joined and had to leave after just ,3,4, or 5 years- there were many that served 10-15 years and moved on -or passed on before reaching a life member status, how many years do THEY represent? There is no way to know, I suspect that collectively over the years probably 1,000 years or more. We also have 19 charter members whos burial place is unknown, three of those were life members and 16 their length of service is unknown- if we average 20 years each those 19 unknowns account for another 220 years of service So were looking at potentially 3,505 years of service to the community by members of the EVFC! And that folks is impressive, and we can thank Charlie Sheffield for bringing it to our attention! Larry Saulsgiver- Trustee EVFC 60R0 O L-UFG w9vRvJG you r
