I can't remember when I first met Harry; I moved to Enfield in
September 1951 and my daughter, Linda, went to 2nd grade at the old
Enfield School. Later on I found that it was Harry who started the
fire and swept out the school, so it was warm when the two teachers
and the children arrived.
At that time, I worked on my brother-in-law's farm and at the
plumbing shop ---and it was Harry who sprayed the beans ---Harry who
pulled the beans and Harry who thrashed the beans.
I got to know Harry and we had many enjoyable talks; he loved
his family ---his community and Baseball! The thing I remember most
about Harry, was that Harry was always warm and friendly!
In 1958 we bought our house below the center and along with
quite a few others, we got our milk and eggs at Harry's. Harry used to
drop in every Sunday morning and we would have a good talk. It was
Harry who sponsered my membership in the company in 1959• One occasion
when we were talking about the fire company's history, he brought along
his diary with some dates I would like to share with you. Harry gave
the land for the station. Here are some excerpts along with a few of
my comments.
June 10, 1948 - Mowed the lot where station will be built.
Jne 15 - Ground broken - From our discussions the town bought a new
power -shoved and it was unloaded at the site and the excavation
was done with this shovel.
Aug 20 - Purchased cinder block for station - now the building really
got started, I believe Andy Palmer was hired to work and
supervise. The work was done by all the volunteers.
Dec 20 - Election of Officers - Banquet at Woodside.
Dec 22 - Shoveled snow off floor of building.
Jan 8, 1949 - Put rafters and roofers on.
