HomeMy WebLinkAbouthistory of central assoc 1893 1976 firemens association_0019CENTRAL NEW YORK FIREMEN'S ASSOCIATION >f' The 82nd Annual Convention was held in Cortland—home town of President George Lange; all the officers from the previous year succeeded themselves. A special tribute was paid to Wilfrid L. "Bill" Parsons at the annual memorial service. The souvenir program book of the Cortland Fire Department was also dedicated to the memory of Mr. Parsons. During the annual meeting, Cortland Fire Chief, Francis "Bud" Quinlan, introduced three members of the Firemen's Home: Jerry Strosser, Henry Gerhards and Jack Schultz. He also honored them by making them honorary members of the Cortland Fire Department. The Second Annual Past -Presidents Banquet was held at Pace's Restaurant with Jr. Past -President Jerry Harrington as Chairman, and Cortland Assistant Fire Chief Charles Wilson as Toastmaster. The Watkins Glen Fire Department presented the association with a new all -Point Trophy for the Hose Toumaments in memory of George Beardsley. The first leg winners on the trophy was won by Montour Falls. There were 36 teams entered in the Hose races—the most teams ever to compete in the Central contests. Sherburne Fire Department was awarded the Paul O'Connor Sportsmanship Trophy. The Trumansburg Fire Department Emergency Squad was the top winner in the First Aid Contest—placing Ist with a perfect score in problem No. 2 and receiving 2nd and 3rd in the remaining two problems. Winners in the annual parade were: Best Appearing Department, Dress Uniform, Sidney; Best C' Appearing Sport Uniform, Preston; Best School Band, Bainbridge; and Best Drum & Bugle Corps, The 4 Pages of Watkins Glen.. The year 1976 promises to be another banner year for the Central New York Firemen's Association. The Annual "Old Timers" Banquet will be held May 22 at the American Home in Cortland. The spring meeting of the Officers and Board of Directors will be held sometime in May at Norwich, the host for the 83rd Annual Convention to be held July 23, 24, and 25. Plans are already in progress for the 1977 Convention to be held in Cazenovia and the 1978 Convention in Ithaca. The total membership reported at the Convention in Cortland in 1975 showed a total of 230 Fire Departments with over 650 individual members in the 19 county area. Historian ..............
