CENTRAL NEW YORK FIREMEN'S ASSOCIATION
The first Annual Past -Presidents dinner was held at Seneca Lodge in Watkins Glen with Jr.
Past -President Arthur Brown as Chairman. There were ten Past -Presidents honored at the banquet.
Jerry Harrington was presented with several gifts from his fellow officers and the Schuyler County
Firemen's Association. Keith Whiting installed the new officers and presented them with their official
badges.
One of the highlights of the Convention was the presenting of a Banner to the association by the
Ladies Auxiliary of Central New York. Mary Zaharian made the presentation to President Harrington
at the Friday meeting in memory of some of the Past -Presidents and Life Members of the Central.
Montour Falls had almost a perfect day at the Hose Tournament by taking 14 out of a possible
15 points while setting two new records and retiring the Chief Louis McGuigan overall Point Trophy.
By winning this trophy they are the only team on record to retire two overall tournament trophies in
succession, having won the Chief Charles Huber Trophy at the Oneonta Convention in 1966. The two
new records set by the "Swampstompers" were in the Motor Hose event with a time of 23.05 and the
Wye Contest with a time of 19.6. They also hold the current record in the Ladder contest with a
time of 12.55. Kirkwood was awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy and McGraw the Breesport Hard
Luck Trophy.
The overall winner in the First Aid contest was the Greene Emergency Squad with 291 points.
The Trumansburg Squad received the trophy for the newest team entered and second place overall
with 271 points. Winners in the parade were: Best Appearing Department Dress Uniform, Apalachin;
Best Appearing Sport Uniform, Bainbridge; Best School Band, Bainbridge; and Best Drum Corps,
Melodiers of Owego.
September 7, 1974 was the date the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls
was officially dedicated by Governor Malcolm Wilson. Wilfrid L. Parson of Cortland County and
Harlow J. Bailey from Schuyler County, both members of the State Fire Advisory Board were
instrumented in first establishing the academy in 1970.
Word was received by the association that Honorary Life Member, Raymond N. Mo:geson,
passed away on October 21, 1974 at the Firemen's Home. He was 77 and was a 33 year member of
the Horseheads Fire Department. The association was also saddened by the death in November of
Wilfrid L. `Bill" Parsons of Cortland. Mr. Parsons was Chairman of the State of New York Fire
Advisory Board and served as Chairman of the Parade Rules Committee in the Central Association for
many years.
Madison County hosted the Annual "Old Timers" Banquet on May 24, 1975 at the Nelson Inn,
Nelson, N.Y. Past -President, Lambert G. Anderson, was honored by being presented with a plaque for
his outstanding service to the Central and "Old Timers" Association. Mr. Anderson was honored in
January by the Herkimer Fire Department and was presented with a 50 year service badge from the
Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company. He also received a life membership in the Fort Dayton Steamer
Company.
