The 1973 "Old Timers" Banquet was held on May 26 in Montour Falls, with Jr. Past Fire Chief,
Eugene Hubbell as Chairman. The annual spring meeting was held April 10 at the David Harum
Restaurant in Homer and the Central New York Day at the Firemen's Home on May 20.
In connection with the 100th Centennial of the Homer Fire Department, the 80th Annual:
Convention was held in this village. Jerry Harrington of Odessa was re-elected President. Harry Dunlop
of Pine City was elected Treasurer and Frederick Todd of Trumansburg, Historian. During the annual
memorial service, a single carnation was placed aside the revered Maltese Cross in a special tribute to
Charles Butts of Norwich. Life Member Lawrence Dwyer of Onondaga County and a Past -President of
F.A.S.N.Y. also answered his last alarm on April 25, 1973.
James "Jimmie" Caruana of Norwich, a former Fire Chief of the McDonough Fire Department
was awarded a Honorary Life Membership in the association. Mr. Caruana has served the Central as
Chairman of the Public Relations Committee for many years. He has been a member of the
reorganizers of the Central New York Old Timers Association of which he is now serving as chairman.
"Jimmie" is the 9th member, not a Past -President of the association to receive this honor.
Seven First Aid teams were entered in the contests with Greene taking first place and the overall
Point Trophy with 278 points. Marathon was awarded the LeRoy Kinsey Trophy donated by Fowler
Finch for the newest team entered in the contest. Apalachin was the overall point winner in the Hose
Tournament with 9% points and won their first leg on the Chief McGuigan Trophy. Odessa won the
Paul O'Connor Sportsmanship Trophy and New Woodstock, the Hard Luck Trophy. Montour Falls
broke their own record in the Ladder contest with a time of 12.55. Sidney Fire Department was
judged the Best Appearing in the parade. Other winners were: Best Auxiliary, Preble Fire Department;
Most in Line, Norwich; and Best School Band, Sherburne-Earlville.
The annual Fall meeting held at the Virgil Fire Station saw a birthday cake cut and served in
honor of Herb Furman, a life member who was 90 years old on September 24. A motion was passed
at this meeting that the Friday evening Banquet at the Annual Convention will be changed to the
Past -President Dinner at which time the installation of officers will be held. The Jr. Past -President will
be the Chairman of the dinner.
The annual spring meeting was held at the Odessa Fire Station on April 20, 1974 and the "Old
Tuners" Banquet in Moravia on May 18. The association was notified of the death of Herb Furman
on July 12, 1974. Many officers and members of the association attended a memorial service for Mr.
Furman held in Elmira on July 13.
Watkins Glen was the site of the 81st Annual Convention and was hosted by the Schuyler
County Fireman's Association. George W. Lang of Cortland was elected President; Ray Sherburne, 1st
Vice -President; and John William of Skaneateles, 2nd Vice -President. Jerry Harrington became the
40th Past -President to receive a regular life membership and Henry Harter of the Hamilton Fire
Department was voted a Honorary Life member. Mr. Harter has served on several committees in the
association and is currently Chairman of the Resolutions Committee and a member of the Election
Board Committee.
