Vice -President; and George Lang, 2nd Vice -President. Past President, Lambert "Pete" Anderson
became a life member as did LeRoy Kinsey, a Past -President of the State Association.
On Saturday morning, 26 teams took part in the Hose tournament with North Norwich winning
the overall Point Trophy having a total of 8 points. Owego Engine Co. No. 4 set a new record in the
Wye contest with a time of 20.9 seconds. The First Aid contest was not held in 1970 as there were
no entries received. The winners of the parade, which was held in a slight downpour were: Best
Appearing Department, Sidney; Best Auxiliary, Walton; and Best Drum & Bugle Corps, "The Squires
of Watkins Glen."
The annual "Old Timers" Banquet was held in Groton on May 15, 1971. On May 16, the
Schuyler County Firemen's Association dedicated a bronze plaque at the New York State Fire
Academy in Montour Falls honoring George Beardsley of Watkins Glen, a past President, life member
and past Director from Schuyler County in C.N.Y.F.A. Mr. Beardsley was a Fireman for a total of 54
years, his death occurred on October 25, 1970.
The first annual visit to the State Firemen's Home on the Hudson by the association was held
May 23, 1971 with 156 members and their wives attending.
The 1971 Convention was again returned to Ithaca for the 12th time with the activities held in
the Village of Cayuga Heights. The annual memorial service paid special tributes to Past -President
George Beardsley (1949-1950) who died on October 25, 1970, and to Chief Robert H. Ellis of
Lansing. Mr. Ellis was local chairman of the Ithaca Convention but was killed in an accident on April
19, 1971.
William L. Parsons of Cortland, Chairman of the State Fire Advisory Board was honored with a
life membership.
The officers remained the same in 1971 with Arthur Brown as President. Four teams took part
in the First Aid contest held Thursday with Greene placing first in the association and Livittown first
in non -association. The Slaterville hose team was the overall Point winner in the Hose tournament,
with a total of 7'/s points as Millport won the Sportsmenship Trophy. Winners in the parade include
Best Appearing Departments: Montour Falls (sports uniform), Sidney (Dress uniform); Best Auxiliary,
McLean; Best School Band, Sherburne; and Best Drum & Bugle Corps, Melodiers of Owego.
The Village of Norwich held the 50th Annual Convention of the Chenango County Firemen's
Association from June 4-11, 1972. It was at this Convention that Charles "Charlie" Butts was
honored for 54 years of dedicated service to the Norwich Fire Departments and the County
Association.
The Trumansburg Fire Department dedicated a new Fire Station on May 20, 1972 in honor of
Stephen H. Craig, a member of that department for 64 years.
The association was saddened by the deaths of two past Presidents, Raymond B. Wheaton
