HomeMy WebLinkAbouthistory of central assoc 1893 1976 firemens association_0012CENTRAL NEW YORK FIREMEN'S ASSOCIATION 1( - The Greene Emergency Squad donated a new overall Point Trophy for the First Aid contests in memory of Captain Donald M. Brown. The winner of this trophy happened to be the Greene Fire Department with 296 points. The Montour Falls hose team won the overall Point Trophy in the hose races with 51/2 points and earned their second leg on the Chief Charles Huber Trophy. The annual parade was a wet one, but despite the showers 15 divisions started marching at 4:00 p.m. Greene was judged the Best Appearing Fire Department; Pine City the Best Auxiliary; Oxford the Best School Band; and Owego the Best Drum & Bugle Corps. Ithaca was awarded the Convention in 1964, the 1 1 th time this city has hosted a Central Association event; the Second Annual Convention was held there in 1894. Lawrence Decker of Montour Falls was elected President. Paul O'Connor, 1st Vice -President and Lampert Anderson of Herkimer, 2nd Vice -President. Arthur A. Churches of Montour Falls was elected Official Starter; he replaced Jesse Chantler of Sherburne who held this office for 8 years. A special tribute was paid to Sanford J. Henion, a life member who served as Association Treasurer from 1939 to 1956. Father Granger was voted a life membership as was Past -President Benn Steinberg. The Hose races saw a total of 34 teams entered with North Norwich winning the overall Point Trophy with 7%z points. In the Motor Hose contest, North Norwich and O. L. Davis of Endwell tied for 1st place and set a new record with a time of 24.1 seconds. The Greene Emergency Squad placed fust in the First Aid contests with Morris receiving the Frank Morgan Trophy for the newest team. The parade was one of the hottest ever held with the temperature near 1000—over 60 marchers were treated for heat exhaustion at the finish. An estimated crowd of 15,000 people viewed the event and saw Penn Yan win the Best Appearing Department award, Pine City Auxiliary, Sherburne School Band and "Barons of Steuben" Drum & Bugle Corps were other top winners. Fowler Finch was elected First Vice -President of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York at the State Convention held in New York City in August. Larry Dwyer, Solvay was elected Second Vice -President. Oneonta was the site of the 72nd Convention where special tributes were paid to John J. Bell and George W. Lang. Mr. Bell was a life member of the Association (1960), who had over 50 years of service in the Owego Fire Department where he served as Chief for a total of 6 years. Mr. Lang was elected Secretary of the Association in 1952, an office he held for 13 years, and in 1965 he was awarded a life member. Except for the office of Secretary, the elected officers stayed the same. Clarence "Pete" Lauper of Pine City was elected to replace George Lang. Joseph M. Scanlon, retired Chief of the Oneonta Fire Department was made a life member. The death of Past President (1918-1919) William R. Riley was reported at the annual memorial service. The C.N.Y.F.A. membership in 1965 was 210 Departments and 700 individual members. The Montour Falls Hose team was the overall Point winners in the hose tournament with 7 points. They placed 1st in the Ladder contest with a record time of 13.0 seconds; 1st in the Motor Hose and 3rd in the Wye event, thus retiring the Chief Charles Huber Trophy, having won it for the third time (1960, 1963, and 1965). Gilbertsville won the Donald M. Brown overall Point Trophy in the First Aid contest with 292 points by taking 1st place in each problem.
