The Convention site moved to the City of Syracuse in 1919. This was the first and only time a
Central event was held in this city; it was also the first time that Onondaga County held the
Convention.
The 1920 Convention was held in Ithaca with the 1921 event in Endicott and 1922 in Auburn.
John W. Illston from Cortland was elected as President during these years.
In 1923 Chenango County was granted membership into the association at the Convention held
in Ithaca. The Oxford and Sherburne Fire Departments becoming the first member from this county.
The total membership of counties was now 10, with 76 member Fire Organizations and 210
individual members. F. H. Stephens of Ithaca was elected President. The 1924 Convention was held in
Owego with the 1925 site at Seneca Falls where George W. Burt of Endwell was elected President.
In 1926 the By -Laws were changed and the official name of the association changed from "The
Central New York Volunteer Firemen's Association" to "The Central New York Firemen's
Association," the name of which our organization is known at the present date. This Convention was
held in Endicott with A. B. Stiles elected President. Cortland was the site of the 34th Annual
Convention followed by Ithaca in 1928. Millwood Fitch of Moravia was President during these two
years.
The 35th Convention was held in Waverly and saw two more counties joining; these being
Schuyler with both Watkins Glen and Odessa Fire Departments becoming member, and Delaware
County with Sidney as this county's first member Company. Ontario County was added in 1930
when three companies of the Geneva Fire Department were admitted; these being Hydrant Hose
Company, Nester Hose Company, and C. J. Folger Hook & Ladder Company. W. McCray from
Waverly was the President in 1929 and 1930.
Charles R. Milford Jr. of Skaneateles was elected President at the Convention held at Endicott in
1931.
The fust C.N.Y.F.A. Convention held in Schuyler County was hosted by the Watkins Glen Fire
Department in 1932. George Beardsley who later became an Association President was Convention
Chairman.
The year 1933 saw another county gaining membership in the Central when Yates County joined
with the Penn Yan Fire Department, becoming the first member Company from this county.
Skaneateles was the host Village during this Convention with E. C. Darby as President. The 1934
Convention was held in Owego. The association was shocked by the sudden death of Dr. Julian Smith
on November 14, 1934. Dr. Smith had been Treasurer of the association for 18 years, first being
elected to office in 1917.
In 1935, during the Forty -Second Annual Convention held in Corning, the association elected as
their President, Howard C. Bartlett of Oxford—the first time in the history of the Central that a
member of Chenango County had been elected to this office.
