ADVISORY BOARD ON TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES
1998 GRANT COMPETITION
The Tompkins County Advisory Board on Tourism Development (ABTD) hereby announces
the 1998 round of Development Grants, which provides funding for events or projects which
attract or enhance overnight visitation to Tompkins County.
"We have reworked the Development Grants program in order to focus the funding in the
ways which we feel will best enhance tourism in the County," said ABTD Chair Ted Schiele.
"With the new theme -based grants and different grant limits, we hope to encourage more
cooperation and coordination among applicant groups and get a bigger bang for everybody's
buck," Schiele said.
Funding of up to $5,000 is available for theme -based grants in the area of educational
tourism, while up to $2,500 is available for all other tourism -related projects. A maximum of
$21,000 is available in this year's grant pool for the grants, which are funded by the
Tompkins County Room Occupancy Tax, a three percent tax on the cost of hotel and motel
rooms in Tompkins County.
There will be two workshops for the 1998 Development Grants cycle. One will be Monday,
March 2 at 8 a.m. at the Old jail Conference Room, 125 East Court Street, and the other will
be Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ithaca Tompkins Transit Center, 737 Willow Avenue
in Ithaca. It is highly recommended that potential applicants attend one of these workshops.
The application deadline for the Development Grants will be Monday, March 16 at 4:30 p.m.
to the Tompkins County Planning Department.
