On January 28th 1948 a certificate of incorporation was issued to
the Enfield Vol fire co. and thus this organization was founded .As we
approach the 50th anniversary of the signing- and the birth of this
organization- our membership has elected to dedicate ourselves to
remembering and honoring those that have gone before us - dedicating
themselves -as have we -toward assisting those In the town of Enfield and
the surrounding area who are in need of assistance.
Over the next year the fire company will be celebrating 50 years of
service to the community with a variety of events. An open house.
Dedication of a memorial garden. Publishing of an anniversary edition of
a chronological time line of the history of the fire company. An
anniversary parade, and anniversary fireworks, all aimed at remembering
the work and sacrifice of the many who have made the EVFC what It Is
today.
On June 15,1948 ground was broken for a two -bay cinder block -
wood stove heated structure- that was to become the first home of the
Enfield Volunteer Fire Company. You need only to look at the facility that
houses the fire company today to realize how far we have come- what
you don't see is the sweat and determination and hard work of so many
people that made it all possible. This Is what the present membership
wishes to honor as we enter into this, our 50th year!
The original fire house -now known as the Enfield community
building -was built on land donated for the cause,by Harry and Gladys
Willis. And In 1981 after his death,A plaque was installed on the building
dedicating it in his memory.
In October of 1982 seven acres of land were purchased from the
W!llise's daughter Helen for the construction of a new fire station. At that
time Helen donated extra land for the construction of a pond to be used
for fire protection and the use of the community counsel swim program.
In June of 1988 the fire company moved into Its new fire station
and the plaque honoring Harry Willis was removed from Its place on the
old fire station and placed In storage. A stone has been ordered on
which the plaque will be mounted and placed on the hillside of the pond
which Harrys wife and daughter played such a part In being constructed.
A small garden will surround the stone as a reminder that- what each of
us do- plays a small part in what our organization is yet to become!
Memorial donations can be made to the Enfield Vol Fire Co Willis
Memorial Garden Fund in care of the fire company.
We will be keeping the community Informed as to time and dates of
events during the upcoming year and in Invite everyone to join us in
honoring those that have served this community so well for 50 years!
