John Applegate. He was a local republican politician and surveyor. Born April 2, 1777 in
West Windsor, New Jersey to Charles (1746) and Mary Slover (1750). He died on December
14, 1825 in Enfield, New York. He is buried along with his wife Mary (1784) in Rolfe Cemetery,
Applegate Road, Enfield. His name is linked to Applegate Corners (Applegate and
Mecklenburg Roads) in the Town of Enfield. From the inscription and symbols on his
headstone, located in Rolfe Cemetery10, he was a Freemason and a religious man. He was
reported in the Ithaca Daily Journal as a republican residing at “Bucktail Corners” in Enfield
constantly battling with the democrats of Tompkins County. He hosted at his home, the many
meetings held to divide Tompkins County to create the Town of Enfield in 1821. He ran for
New York State Governor, legislative positions in the county 11 and became Enfield Town
Supervisor in 182212 then again in 1824. Applegate was a member of the Board for the Ithaca
Academy in 182013. He operated a tavern at Applegate Corners (designated by a NYS Road
Marker) recorded in 180714 and operated a postoffice there in 182315. He also surveyed the

“official roads” in Enfield in 1822 thru 1825 16. He married Mary Rightmire (1784 New Jersey –
1843 Enfield, NY born to Lewis (1753) and Eleanor Vanderbilt (1761) on May 13, 1802. They
had four children during their marriage17.
Carlos Applegate Born 1804 in Enfield, New York to John Applegate (1777) and Mary
Rightmire (1784), he died October 12, 1886 in LeClaire Iowa and is
buried in Glendale Cemetery. Carlos was Enfield Town Supervisor from
1839 – 1841 and 1849. He was a Justice of the Peace in 1853 and a
Commissioner of Schools in Enfield from 1830 - 1833. He married
Melissa Stone (1802 Vermont – 1868 Iowa) They had five children
during their marriage. Carlos married a second time Anna Rightmire
(1784 – 1877) of Waverly, Iowa on December 9,1869. Carlos’s family
located their home at Applegate Corners (south west corner Applegate
and Mecklenburg Roads). The family moved to Iowa after purchasing
land in Scott County in 1853. His occupation was a farmer and lumber
dealer. He represented Scott County in the 13 th General Assembly from
1870 – 1872.18
Walter Paine (Payne). Born in Broome County, New York November 1782 he died January
19, 1864 in Erie, Ohio and is buried with his wife Mary (1786) in Edwards Grove Cemetery,
Greenwich Ohio. Walter was a delegate on November 18, 182019 at a meeting which was held to
discuss the division of the Town of Ulysses and Hector into three towns. He was Enfield Town
Supervisor in 1821 and then in 1823. He also served as Justice of the Peace from 1821 –
1822. He served as one of the Highway Commissioners from 1830 – 1832. In 1833 he sold
his property in Enfield and moved his family to Ripley, Ohio.20 He was married to Mary Ink
(1786 – 1847 Ohio). They had 9 children during their marriage. Frederick C. (FC) a son born
in Enfield in 1819 told of his being educated by his father and eventually because a Methodist
Preacher in Ohio.

Bethuel Vincent Gould Born in Muncy, Lycoming County,
Pennsylvania on September 2, 1800 to Stephen (1774) and Phebe
Guy (1779). His parents settled on a farm in the town of Hector,, New
York in 180921. In 1822 he married Deborah Allen (1804 New Jersey
– 1863 NY), daughter of Ephraim Allen (1773) and Lydia Amack
(1769). Bethuel was buried with his first wife Deborah (1804) in Rolfe
Cemetery, Applegate Road, Enfield, New York.
He was Enfield Town Supervisor from 1835 – 1838 and one of the
Commissioner of Highways in 1854. He bought a farm of 75 acres in
the town of Enfield on Military lot 55. He lived on this farm for over 40
years. They had 12 children during their marriage. His second wife
was Mary Farrington (1810 NY – 1892 NY) At the age of 62 he came
to Trumansburg and purchased a home which has been his residence and in which he died.
Always a Whig, he was one of the original delegates that met in Ithaca to organize the
Republican party in Tompkins County. In religion he was a Baptist.22
Jared Treman (Tremaine or Truman). Born on October 5, 1800, in Trumansburg, New York,
to Abner (1761) and Mary McLallen (1767). He was Enfield Town Supervisor in 1844.
He married Anne Marie Louise Le Pine Paddock (1794 NY– 1857 NY) on November 23, 1819
They had nine children during their marriage.. He died on July 11, 1889 and is buried with his
wives Anne Marie and Wealthy Crampton (1804 – 1881 NY) in Grove Cemetery,
Trumansburg, New York.
A grist mill was first built at Enfield Falls in 1817 by Isaac Rumsey. That mill burned down in
the 1830s and a new one was built by Jared Treman, Robert H. Treman’s great uncle which
the mill was in use from 1839 until 1917.23. In 1850 the mill was sold and Jared moved to
Trumansburg.
