HomeMy WebLinkAboutHighway historyEnfield Highway Superintendent and Deputy Highway Superintendent 1 Town Highway Superintendent1 is currently elected for a two year term. This position is responsible for one of the town's principal functions: the development and maintenance of town Roads and bridges. Equipment and personnel for highway work and contracts for work on state and county Roads make up a substantial part of the town budget. In the 1801 law, the town was obligated to elect 3 highway commissioners. The commissioners appointed overseers for each of the 3 districts in the town. It was the duty of the overseer to assess highway work with the town among the residents in the districts. Early residents were assessed a certain number of hours or day's labor on the Roads of their district. Residents could be paid in cash at various rates up to 40 cents per day if they wished. By 1858 provisions were made where towns could raise $250 for highway purposes. Very early Roads, such as the Catskill Turnpike, was maintained by the turnpike company. When the turnpike companies failed the highway reverted to the town. A 1908 law created the new office of Town Superintendent of Highways which replaced the town Highway Commissioners. 1821 John Able, Isaac Beach, Thomas Browers, Amos Buck, John Mack, John Stille 1822 Isaac Beach, Amos Ogden, Jonathan Rolfe, John Stille 1823 Isaac Beach, Peter Ink, Amos Ogden, Walter Payne, Jonathan Rolfe 1824 Peter Ink, Amos Ogden 1825 Daniel Brown, Silas Follet, Caleb Homel, Peter Ink, Amos Ogden 1826 Daniel Brown, Silas Follet, Luther Gere, Amos Ogden 1827 Silas Follet, Cyrus Gray, Amos Ogden, Ralph Mettler 1828 John Ammack, Joshua Johnson, Ralph Mettler, Joshua Nicholson, Amos Ogden, Jonathan Sheffield 1829 Cyrus Gray, Joshua Nicholson, Jonathan Sheffield, Willliam Vescelius 1830 Robert Appleton, John Fish, Cyrus Gray, William Hunter, Walter Paine, Joshua Nicholson, Jonathan Sheffield 1831 John Fish, Joshua Nicholson,Walter Raymond, Jonathan Sheffield 1831 John Fish, Walter Paine, Jonathan Sheffield 1832 Andrew Bostwick, John Fish, Joshua Nicholson, Walter Paine, Jonathan Sheffield, William Vescelius 1833 Andrew Bostwick, Joel Bassett, Belon Whiteny, Stephen Wilkin, William Vescelius 1834 Joel Bassett, Shelon Whitney, Stephen Wilkin 1835 Cyrus Gray, George Ink, Joshua Nicholson, Joshua Rumsey, Stephen Wilkin 1836 Cyrus Gray, Chas.
