Eliza was born 5 February 1822 in Tompkins County to an Irish father and a mother born in New
York. Her family name is unknown.
She married Amos D. Lancaster who was born 24 November 1820 in Dutchess County, New
York. By 1850 they were married. Amos was a carpenter and they spent their entire life
together in the Town of Enfield. Their home was in the NE ¼ of Section 55 in Enfield which is on
the Enfield/Ithaca Town Line (Sheffield Road) just south of the Mecklenburg Road (Rte. 79)—
Kennedy’s Corner.
On 3 Mar 1887, Amos bade Eliza goodbye as he left the home to go to the wood lot to chop
down some trees and that he would be home by 2 PM. By 5 PM when he had not returned,
Eliza alerted neighbors who began searching for him. Soon after, they found his lifeless body in
the snow having what appeared to be a heart attack. He was 66 years old. His burial was in
Rolfe Cemetery, Enfield. The gravestone includes both their names but only Eliza’s date of
birth.
They had no children.
According to Tompkins County Probate Court records, Eliza died in Ithaca 14 October 1898 at
the age of 78 years, almost a year to the day when she made her will which left all her
possessions to her sister in law Angeline Kennedy.
It is presumed Eliza is buried in Rolfe Cemetery with her husband Amos.
