HomeMy WebLinkAboutGrange Newsletter 1968 September 6ow ENFIELD GRANGE MEMBERS & FRIENDS September 6, 1968 1967-68 (9) ORNE CA2cFlIl.V 0P Fob Here we go again with another delayed edition of the Enfield Valley Grange Newsletter. As usual, I'm ,just like the cow's tail. Following along behind. Master Carpenter wanted this out in time to announce the Election of Officers at the September 10th meeting. It will certainly run close to schedule. I do hope you get a chance to read it before you leave for the meeting. As usual, also, things will look a little different because instead of dividing it into columns, I'm typing all the way across the page. And I normally write up all the things I want to use in the Newsletter but this time I'm typing directly on to the stencil. So you ,just won't know what is coming up next. Our most important news of the past is the Past Master' s program held on August 13th at the regular meeting time. A dish to pass supper was held at 6:30 p.m. and boy did we ever had some important people present . State Master Robert Drake was there and to us at the Grange, that's ,just about as important as having the President of the United States. You will now notice that right here in mid-stream we change typewriters, And right here is where we go off on several different Items. So read on because you will find that the Enfield Grange members and friends have been and w'_11 be a very busy group. High in importance on the list of coning events is the September meet- ing. I have just been informed by Doris Specht and Milllcnet that a dish-to--share supper will proceed the Election of Officers meeting. You are all invited and you are asked to bring your own table service , a covered dish to pass (I think that means casserole but I 'm going to check because I have lots of dishes with covers) rolls and yourselves. And also at our Past Plaster 's program was Morris Halliday and his petit w1fe . That woman is always smiling I do believe. Mr. Halliday is as we all know, our State Secretary. And Mr & Nrs, Russell Luce honored us with their presence . They are our State Deputies and iirs. Luce Is our State Junior riatron. The Stat-- Overseer and the Executive Committer Chairmen helped to round out our exciting evening. Oh yes , I musn't forget the entertainment we had. Seven of the younger set (kids of Grangers) sang twice during the evening. A selection of five songs altogether, including the beautiful "Church in The Wildwood. ' r IM Those participating were Marcia and Melinda Carpenter, Doreen-and Kim Gray, JoAnn Lovelace, Katie Smith and Bridgette Brown. With only 3 practice sessions, these kids sounded wonderful. Bill Butman, one of our newer members, was in charge of a car wash down at the Grange. This was also taken over by our younger ones. The above mentioned and some others all helped to scrub cars and a donation to our treasury was made from this project. I believe we will again be selling cookbooks and more information will be given out at the September meeting. Sure was nice to see our Treasurer, Chuck Guyett, at the Past Master's Program. That man does a very neat and thorough job with our records. Always has an accurate report ready whether he can attend himself or not. The running water at the Grange Hall is certainly a Godsend. Phelps thanked all those from around here who called at the funeral home. Several of our members and friends went over. They reported that they had never seen such a long line of callers before. As we said before , this was a wonderful man. Gary and Marily Kemp have purchased a new home on Titus Avenue In Ithaca Marilyn's mother, Esther Zaldokas, won first prize at a contest at one of the super markets in Ithaca last month. Second prize was won by Gary 's mother, Helen Kemp. I think the prizes were lawn furniture and a Bar-B-Que grill. Helen Kemp and her husband Doug have taken off for a week ' s visit in Virginia with relatives. They took their two year old grandson with them. We had a really nice Ice Cream Social at Harold ' s Laue 's home on July 6th. Nearly 200 people were served and the food was delicious. The weather was windy but you almost overlooked It. Little Fred Rumsey and his wife from Trumansburg were there. Been a long time since we saw them last. He still has his great sense of humor. Ernest Laue was unable to attend the Past Master' s Program even though he is a Past Master because he has given up some of his farming and Is now working at the Board of Education in Ithaca. Mabel Purdy Is having a new office built on at her home. That ' s a good looking screen door. Robin Thall traveled to the Tioga County Fair Sept. 2nd to participate In a Routine in front of the Grand Stand to intorduce Hank Snow. She Is in with a group of young girls at the Roseanne School of Dance. They held a picnic at Willowood Aug, 30th. George and Hildred Stark also missed the Past Naster' s Program because they were on a vacation in Virginia that week. Mrs. Elizabeth Stevenson traveled here from Windsor to spend some time with her brother Harvey this summer and she was also present. On August 26th, a show in her honor was given at the Grange Hall by Mrs, Joseph Carr and Mrs. Forest Specht. That 's a shower, not a show. Boy, I can't even report things as I hear them. What ever kind of show would Doris put on. Anyway, it was a variety shower for iilss Stevenson who was married on August 30th to Douglas Bennett of Windsor. Mrs. Bennett has been a Home Ec teacher in Windsor for many years. Lee Carpenter just started reading over this stuff and wanted to know why I mention the titles of two of our State Officers at the Past Master 's Program and not their names. I don't know. But anyway, the State Overseer is Nelson Harolf and the Executive Committee Chairman is Edmund Marvin. Sorry about that. And why didn 't you say that there were over $0 people present that night, she said. There were over $0 people present that night. (Guess that ought to quit her down. ) Carl Newhart is on vacation from his job on the mail route but I couldn " find out whether or not he went anyplace. We have in our midsts this year four more members who have reached 60 years of membership in the Grange. They are Mrs. Lida Griffen who Joined August 25th, 1908, Mrs. Line Jones who Joined July 14th, 1908, Mr. Hulse Smith who Joined March 10tlh, 1908, and Mr. Arthur Teeter who Joined September 22nd, 1908. Mrs. Maranda Cornish completes her 25th year of membership this year on November 9th. Mary Thall, wife of member Jack, of Salo Drive in Trumansburg is now getting around quite well in her wheelchair. She is able to get into the car. with Jack's help and go for a ride now and then. Jack tells me that she had a plate, a pin and 5 silver screwsin her hip. That 's a lot of hardware to carry around. She will have another set of X-rays the end of this month to see how she is progressing. We are all very pleased at the way you are recovering, Mary. Roy and Nina Linton spent some time camping in Nova Scotia this summer. Roy was present to accept his Past Master's pin last month. The Enfield Mothers are at their campsite In Aurora this week. Those attending from around here are , Elizabeth Rumsey, Susie Hansen, Edna Graham and Martha Peterson. Martha Peterson is not from Enfield. She Is from that popular place called Cayutaville. Her and I and Irene. Secretary, Warena Ramsey is reported to have left Florida the first part of this week and is on her way home. She is traveling with a friend from Florida, Mrs. Jay (Mildred) Rumsey. Mrs. Rumsey will visit friends around here for a while. Hazel Updike was escorted to the Virgin Islands recently by her son Harold. They are now in Florida and she will be home the first part of next week. Fred and Blanche Tilton attended the graduation of their daughter Joyce from Business School in Syracuse last month. (That 's Peral Rolfe 's granddaughter. ) Ed and Helen Marshall entertained guests off and on during the summer at their cottage at the lake. Alfred and Florence Graham also spent their summer at their cottage. Enfield not only has a new edition to it 's school coming up, it has a new Principal. I°ir. Patrick Saggese, a former Physical Ed Instructor at South Hill and worker with the Ithaca Day Camp, he replaces Frank Spadaro who is now full time Principal at Glenwood. Doris and Woody Specht had a full summer. In July, daughter-in-law Betsy (wife of Stan) and granddaughter Stacey were out for a visit. On July 17th, Doris and Woody took Betsy took the airport at Rochester and put her on a plane back home. About four hours later at the same airport they picked up daughter Linda and brought her home for a visit. Eleanor Daharsh underwent surgery and is now coming along very well. She is back at her Job as a Library Teacher with the Ithaca School District. Guess what. Ihave so much nice newsy gossip to print that I have to go to page 6 and that means there will be two back pages. Do you notice that there seems to be a lot of activity around here for such a small place. Well, two back pages isn't all bad. Now we can finish up the rest of the news. George Laue , son of Harold and Florence , will return for his sophomore year at Cortland State on September 15th. Also returning for her sophomore year is Nancy Bock. She is at Cortland State too. Did I tell you that Lee Carpenter is now working at the H.A. Moog Co. in Trumansburg? Not that I want to start any rumors, but that 's where Woody Specht works too. And Pat Gray is now working at the Cornell Alumni News. That means that we will have to recruit some new help in order to put on our Election Day Supper this year. Anyone interested? Card parties continue at their regular pace. The next one will be on September loth. For those of you who haven't yet tried one of our card parties, you really should. It 's nothing like a poker game. It ` s sort of like simplified Bridge. I sure wish I knew how to play. So do a lot of the people that get me for a partner. We have had two gas stoves donated to the Grange and a hot water heater which we hope to get hooked up soon. Well, guess we 're stuck with a half page. It won 't look to keen but it Is now 10 :00 p.m. and Lee and I have to run these off, staple them together, address and stamp them yet tonight. And we both work tomorrox Sure would be nice if some of you would let us know what you're doing so we can pass on the word. This has been a very interesting letter for me because I have caught up with most of the summer and have checked up on the many people who get this newsletter. The members of the Grange and of the community extend heartfelt sympat'._y to the family of Charles Spencer who was killed in an automobile accident on September 2nd. Sympathy is also extended to the family of Paul Morehouse who died this summer and to the family of Mildred Bickal who passed away recently. Remember to drive carefuly because our children are now back in school,. Just heard that Gerhadrt Achilles took a trip to Canada and is new back and living in his new home on the Applegate Road. Talk about skipping around. At least I accomplished one thing. I filled out this page . Attend the church of your choice this Sunday. There are three churches in the Town of Enfield. Mitch and I and our five little ones fill up a pew each Sunday at one of them. Odds and ends of information to fill up this last page really don't account for an awful lot but they do fill up the page. Carolyn Thall (wife of Carlton, who is a member) took a test for a Class 2 Chauffer's license September 3rd. She passed it on the first try. She hopes to be driving one of the buses out at Trumansburg soon. Sure hope she doesn't get the bus with our kids on it. Different people and organizations have rented the hall quite frequently in the past. Over the summer, there was a beauty counsellor meeting (Helen Willis Jackson) a Beeline fashion show (Ginny Carlisle) , and September 8th the Methodist Church will hold a dinner and suppercombination. (Remember, you will have to excuse the mistakes because I 'm at work and there is no correction fluid handy and my boss is in the next room and doesn't know what I 'm doing. ) "TIDBITS" Two thirds of all the tractors in the world are on U.B. farms. Some 140 million people are crowded into less than two per cent of the land in continental United States. Potato chips rank first among snack foods. About 3.3 billion pounds of potatoes, or 16-1/2 pounds for every individual in the United States were used to make potato chips in 1966. Americans spend more than $2 billion annually on snack-foods such as potato chips, pretzels , nuts , corn chips , cheese-flavored corn puffs, cracker sandwiches, popcorn and flavored crackers. NOW WASN'T THAT INTERESTIYGII ! 1 ! 1111 ! ! ! 11 ! 11111 ! ! 11 ! 1 ! 1 ! I1 Have to sign off for this month, but please remember how importatt the Election of Officers is. Support your Grange. It is a crowing organization in your community. A reminder that Kathy (Mrs. Gale) Carlisle is now writing for the Enfield area in the Free Press. The Enfield news has become pretty important to many people, so if you have anything interesting to report, please call Kathy. She will be more than happy to put it in for you. Several of our Grangers are avid readers of the column. Another means of communication with them. And to those of you who are back on your dues , please try to get them caought up. Our secretary really dislikes having to hound you. There are very very few late dues payers so this little chore can be accomplished very quickly if those of you who fit into this category drop your check in the mail to day to Warena Ramsey. Thanks. I believe that about clears things up for a while. Remeber too, that I enjoy hearing from you with news on our Grangers. I have received some very interesting things on the history of some of our old buildings in Enfield and will be passing that along as soon as time permits. Last week after church, someone remarked that things were really in a terrible state of being. What with the Vietnam situation, the death of loved ones near to us and the shambles our political affairs seem to be in, it seems hard to get up in the morning without wondering what will happen today. It reminded me of a remark I read that Martin Luther King had said. "Fear knocked, Faith answered, No one was there." Until we meet again. . . . . . Pat.
