SEPTEMBER 28, 1993 - 7:30 PM.
PRESENT: Gary Fisher, Wilma Fisher, Hilda Amberge, Ellie Hobbie, Jack Hubbell, Sue
Thompson
Minutes of the August 31 meeting were reviewed and approved.
HISTORY BOOK: Sue T. passed out a listing of chapters for the Enfield History book
which, included the names of authors writing the chapters. The Military chapter is still
in need of an author.
A reminder was made to include the Reynold King Reserve Center located in
Ithaca. Reynold King lived in Enfield, he died during World War IL William Mather will -
be contacted for Civil War material. William does not have time to write but will
contribute material he has concerning the Civil War. It was decided that -a list of people
who were in the military should be listed. People need to be contacted such as, Ralph
Everhart and Roger Hubbell, to help make a list of the military people who have lived in
Enfield and served in a war. Suggestions were made as to where to go for researching
this information:
-Voter registration list - to see who voted in absentia using their home addresses
-Assessment Office - tax exempt because of being in the military
-Ithaca Journal articles
-Cemetery listings
-Babcock Hall - New York State Veterans Office
-County Clerks Office - book of draftees eligible in World War II
-Local history books - contact authors who wrote about veterans from other towns
RECIPE BOOK
Sue T. contacted Alice Laue and asked her to chair the recipe book committee.
She agreed. Sue will take the recipes to Alice.
A reminder was made to give Helen Smith credit for arranging to have the `recipe'
book done.
Gary F. will bring the receipe book information to Alice which Helen S. had given
him. We need a publishing date for the receipe book. A suggestion of getting the book
done as soon as possible was made. Everyone agreed. A collection of donations is still
to be made from local businesses who want to
advertise in the receipe Helen S. had suggested to remind the businesses that, it is a
business advertisement for your business and a way of recording your business in an
historical document for years to come.
TRIVET: Gary F. has a lead on someone who might be able to computer digitize the
map on the trivet, so that we may redo it. Martha C. still needs to be contacted to
arrange for another permission letter from her.
WALL HANGING
Wilma Fisher reported that the "Enfield Map Quilt Project Assessment Group" met
and talked about the different avenues to go regarding the Wall Hanging. Members of
the committee are Wilma fisher, Doris Rothermich and Mary Lehmann. (see attached
minutes 9/7/93). They will need help -if the project is going to continue. Their main

suggestion is to embroider the Wall Hanging. They also need a date on which to base
their map on. Brandon Fisher volunteered to make forms for volunteer applications
regarding the embroidery. Anyone contacted for helping with this project should
contact Wilma. Wilma will report back at the October meeting. The committee thanks
Wilma and Doris for all their work on the Wal! Hanging... keep up the good job!
SIDE NOTE CONVERSATION: Jack Hubbell reported that according to official records,
there was no postoffice listed in West Enfield - Georgia Road. This statement was
made in reference to the Wall Hanging map.
COMMEMORATIVE LOGO: Sue T. contacted Christine Finnigan, Enfield School Art
Teacher, regarding a logo contest at the school. Christine agreed to help out. She
however needs a time frame and rules for the logo. The Committee decided on the
following rules for the logo contest:
1. The Commemorative Committee would like the logo entrees to judge prior to the
Enfield Elementary School Fun Fair in May.
2. The Commemorative Committee will use the logo to their discretion. Possible
usage - newsletters, official commemorative programs, posters, t -shirts.
3. All logos will be displayed throughout the town during the year 1996.
4. The Commemorative Committee will choose one logo to use. They would like
two submissions from each class at the school.
5. The logo should deal with history - locations - items involved in Enfield's history.
6. The dates: 1821 - 1996 are to be located in the logo.
The Committee sends their thanks to Christine for volunteering to help on this
logo project. Sue will contact Christine again and report back to the Committee in
October.
NEW MEMBERS: Jack H. asked Doris Rothermich if she would like to be an official
member of the Commemorative Committee. She said she would think about it and give
Jack an answer later.
STORAGE OF BOOKS AND OTHER COMMEMORATIVE ITEMS
A place is needed for storage of the receipe_booksand history books. There is no
real place in the town hall for storage of these items. When asking for alternative
places we need to make sure the people will take responsibility of the items - making
sure they are locked up securely and there is no public access to the room.
Suggested places are: Enfield School - Sue T. will contact Mrs. Brown, school principal;
Dewitt Historical Society - Ellie Hobbie will contact the society; Fire Department
building; Churches in Enfield; Closet located in the Town Hall needs to be cleaned
HISTORY BOOK STYLE SHEETS: Sue T. handed out style sheets for chapter writers.
Everyone was requested to review them at home and bring suggestions to the October
meeting. Jack H. requested Sue contact Annabel Seamon and Fern Ferris who will be
doing the writing for the Fire Auxiliary Organization.
The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Sue Thompson
Report of "Enfield Map Quilt" Project. Assessment Group
Sept. 7, 1993
(This meeting was scheduled as of Sept. 2, 1993)
Doris Rothermich, Arlene Fisher and Wilma Fisher met with Mary Lehmann.
It was the unanimous consensus of the group that we do not feel able to
continue the project in its present medium.
we question if a quilt the size of the largest map is feasible and would
propose a slightly lighter shade of green, as background.
It was suggested that the roads be stitched on by machine (perhaps with a
double needle) and that they be labelled by script or print --embroidered on by
hand.
Also we might indicate:. cemeteries and schools, churches, hotels etc. of
the past with simple patchwork appliques.
The idea of Enfield Centre being the main focal point was discussed
positively.
Perhaps Enfield Falls should be depicted. (Are there any falls in Enfield
Township?)
This meeting was only exploratory and any ideas, thoughts and suggestions
you may have to be considered please add below.
What about a " ipe dream" of Sodus Bay R.R.?.

HISTORY BOOK: Sue T. reported there was been no progress in locating more writers for the
history book. Laura Main was given research done by Helen Smith and Sue Thompson so that
she can write the chapter on Churches and Cemeteries. Laura is a 1st grade teacher at Enfield
Elementary School. Mary Cole was given research done by Sue Thompson so that she can write
the chapter on Enfield Elementary School. Mary Cole is an Assistant Teacher at- Enfield
Elementary School. William Bassett sent a letter and outline of the chapter on Geology which
he will be writing. Additional suggestions for contacts on the military veteran list were made -
- Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Dewitt Historical Society. Sue T. reported
she called the Dewitt Historical Society and asked about local people involved in research on the
different wars. Margaret Hobbie, County Historian, did not know of any research done.
There was discussion on research which could be done using the cemetery listings (Alan
Chaffee). Someone asked the question, "when in the course of history did you expect not to
loose members of your family all the time from disease". A good topic for someone to
research.
RECEIPE BOOK: Sue T. reported that all recipes were taken to Alice Laue. Gary F. needs
to get the rest of the recipe information to Alice. A list of businesses needs to be forwarded to
Alice for contacts of financial support for the cookbook.
WALL HANGING: The Enfield Map Quilt Project Assessment Group is still working on
locating people to make a wall hanging. Wilma F. will be talking to Linda VanNederynen about
the wall hanging.
John Smith has the quilt at his home. Linda VanNederynen should be contacted and asked how
to properly store the quilt till the birthday celebration.
COMMEMORATIVE LOGO: Sue T. talked to Christine Finnigan regarding the Logo Contest
at the Enfield Elementary School. Christine will start the contest in early spring. The contest
will involve the 2nd - 5th grades. Chris requested a display of photos showing locations in
Enfield be placed in the front glass case at school. Jack H. and Sue T. will work on this
display.

Dewitt Historical Society might be able to store our history books. There will be a charge per
square foot of space used.

FINANCIAL: Gary F. reported that the Town Board at their October meeting asked what the
funding for the Commemorative Committee would be used for. They were told the major
funding would be for the History book. The Board had not designated funding for the
committee this year, but changed their minds. The funding is under the "Line Item
Celebrations". $3500 has been appropriated to the committee. There is no guarantee that the
Board will fund the committee next year. More contact with the board needs to be made. Sue
T. will update the budget sheet and hand out copies at the next Commemorative Committee
meeting.

Gary F. reported he had gone to the County Court House to do some research. . Part
of the records he looked at, was the Records of Incorporation. The files start in the
