FEBRUARY 23, 1993
Present: Jack Hubbell, Helen Smith, Hilda Amberge, Wilma Fisher, Gary Fisher,
Ellie Hobbie, Sue Thompson, Barb McKeith
Corrections were made to the October meeting minutes.
Helen Smith gave a presentation of the trivet she has requested from the
Commemorative Committee to have made and sold as a fund raising project for the
Commemorative Celebration. A map of Enfield with a picture of the Enfield Falls Mill
is on the trivet. The title on the trivet is "Six Mile Square Town - 1821 - 1996". A
vote was taken on whether to have the trivet printed in black and white or red and
white. The motion passed to have the trivet printed in black and white. The trivet
will cost $4.00 each with 300 printed up. The trivet will be made available a-Awhf--
ry CJ 1995 to be sold at Treman State Park and. any other community events
which are held.
There was discussion on the accuracy of the map on the trivet. Gary Fisher requested
the committee check the map for historical accuracy. We need to reference the map
the drawing was made from.
There was discussion on the names of roads in Enfield. Rothermich road was named
by the Rothermich family when they first came to Enfield. Black Oak road was
formerly referred to as Connecticut Hill road. Jack Hubbell located a map from 1960,
which matched the trivet drawing. Gary suggested adding roads which were not
included in the drawing such as, Tucker road, Sage road, and Weatherby road. Roads
in the town were laid out and each road had a reference number. Road Name Signs
were probably not placed until 1960-1961. People at one time also used the Clock
System Maps which were all referenced by numbers.
Gary was asked to take the 1960 map and compare it to the trivet picture and make
any corrections and additions to the picture. The committee will then ask Martha
C h OLWn C,-- to make the corrections for the trivet.
It was discussed and decided that a representative from the committee needs to
approach the town board regarding the handling of funds by committee members.
One of the major questions would be how to handle money collected from the sell of
the trivet, History Book, and the cook book.
Helen reported that the cook book project is proceeding well with lots of recipes
collected.
Wilma Fisher reported having newspaper clippings from the late 1800's concerning
Enfield people. She is now going over them to check for information the committee
might be able to use for the Enfield History book.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Thompson

ENFIELD COMMEMORATIVE COMMITTEE
APRIL 27, 1993 - 7:30 - 9:00 PM.
PRESENT: Gary Fisher, Wilma Fisher, Hilda Amberge, Ellie Hobbie, Jack Hubbell,
Sue Thompson, LouisW Ck.Sf %
Motion was made to officially appoint Gary Fisher to Chairperson position. Motion
seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
Corrections made to minutes of March 23, 1993.
Gary asked that all members contact him for items to be placed on the agenda for
each meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
Enfield History Book:
Sue has to contact Morrison printers (W.E. Morrison, Main St. Ovid - 869-
2561) for second publishing company. Jack suggested a publisher used by the
Lansing Historical Society - he will contact Sue with the name and address.
Sue reported contacting Tom McEnteer. Tom is one of the organizers and
contributors of the Tioga County History Book. He is willing to come talk to the
Commemorative Committee during the summer. Sue will contact Tom in June.
Gary suggested the committee make a list of questions to ask Tom when he
comes. Possible questions:
How to deal with the inclusion/writing of different ethnic groups - racial
references?
From a legal point of view should the committee be incorporated to protect
it's authors from being sued or is the group protected by the town as it is a town
committee - need to check with the town lawyer.
There was discussion on others who might come to present information on
publishing a history book. Ellie will contact the Dewitt Historical Society for a
possible presentation from a member of their group.
Sue reported the following people who are willing to work on various parts
of the Enfield History book: Karen French (272-2062) "Telephone Office" ; Bob
and Leah Carpenter (387-6001) Enfield Grange; Marnee Kirschengesner and Helen
Jackson - Enfield Community Council.
It was suggested that William Mather Oradell Road 387-6077) be contacted
as a possible writer of the Military History. L. Pierce Williams was also suggested
as another possible Military History writer. Sue will contact William Mather first.
There was discussion regarding a Donors and Patrons page in the History
book. This would help pay for the book. A possible way to pay for the pictures in
the book would be to have them dedicated by people at a cost of $10.00 (depends
on the printing charge): example: description of landmark ...in memory of
grandfather Henry. The committee had decided before that there would be no
1
business advertising in the History book.
Trivet: Gary reported that Martha Chacona did not care to change the map on the
commemorative trivet. Helen Smith received Martha's permission in writing for the
committee to make their own changes to the trivet. Gary is working on having the
trivet picture computer scanned so that changes can be made on a clean copy.
Quilts: Helen Smith will be our contact for the quilts. One quilt is being made to
raffle for a fund raiser for the birthday celebration. The other quilt is a wall
tapestry to be hung up and shown at town functions. The tapestry has a map of
Enfield on it. We need a list of people who have worked and are working on these
quilts.
Contact Person: Gary suggested that the committee make sure that we always
have a contact person for each project involved with the committee.
Logo: Gary asked about the logo of the committee. He was told that a logo was
not officially chosen. Sue was asked to bring in the logo pictures which were
submitted so that the committee can review them at their next meeting.
A suggestion was made that perhaps the Historical Society might like to
handle selling T -Shirts, bumper stickers, etc. with the history logo on them.
Funding Raising: It was suggested that Randy Warden (town judge and president
of the Enfield Historical Society) be asked about the official law of funding raising
within a town committee.
Cook Book: Gary had questions regarding the History Cook Book. Helen Smith is
in charge of the Cookbook. Helen will be asked to report on the cookbook
progress at the next meeting. One question came up regarding the paid ads in the
cookbook.
Celebrations: Gary asked what other groups the commemorative committee had
contacted regarding ideas for the celebration of Enfield' birthday. Sue reported
that no particular person was contacted just historical organizations. The
committee did receive information from The Tioga County Historical Celebration
from Carol Henry. Sue will bring copies of this information to the next meeting.
It was suggested that Newfield Old Home Days be contacted for information
- Sue will contact them.
Ellie volunteered to contact her old home church who had just recently
celebrated a birthday with a community celebration.
It was also suggested to contact the Trumansburg Celebration committee -
Barb McKeith might know who to contact. Sue will call Barb.
NEW BUSINESS
Gary asked for a nomination for a Vice -Chairperson for the Commemorative
2
Committee. Ellie nominated Sue, Gary seconded, motion passed.
Birthday Celebration Subcommittees:
Gary asked for suggestions of subcommittees for the birthday celebrations.
These subcommittees will all need separate chairpersons.
Publicity
Community Picnic
Parade
Opening Celebration
Roger Brown Memorial Softball game
Memorial Rock
There was lots of discussion regarding these subcommittees.
The question was asked if these major birthday events should be held in
conjunction of an event all ready occurring within the community or, if the events
should be held separately.
How much do we want to separate the birthday celebration events out?
Asking various community groups to chair a subcommittee was suggested.
A Calendar of Events was also suggested. Contacts from the various
community groups are needed:
Elementary School
Churches
Grange
Community Council
Fire Department
Senior Citizens
Hilda suggested that the Senior Citizens group be contacted to possible have
a representative from each road in Enfield. This representative would keep their
neighbors in touch with the Birthday Celebration. Etta Gray - President would be a
good person to contact regarding this project.
Wilma Fisher asked for suggestions on the content of the "Mother's Club"
section she is researching for the Enfield History Book. Suggestions of: what the
club was/is; where they met, who was involved, how long they met for.
There was discussion regarding different ethnic groups which settled in the
town of Enfield. Jack noted that at one time - he was told a certain ethnic group
had settled at Kennedy's Corners and started the Kennedy's Corners Church.
Since Helen, who is researching church history, was not there to answer this
question we will ask her at the next meeting regarding this group.
Meeting adjourned 9:25 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Thompson
