HomeMy WebLinkAboutharveyFebruary 17, 1995 Enfield Town Hall % Sue Thompson Town Historian Enfield Main Road Ithaca, NY 14053 Dear Ms. Thompson, Here is the information on the Harvey family, that settled in the Enfield area in 1806, that I promised. It is as though as I can make it at this time. I have only been at this research for a short time, and there is so much more to be obtained As I work on it, I make corrections, and if there is any errors in this piece that is brought to your attention, I would like to so informed too. As I stated in the telephone conversation, I will be available for any help that is needed. I hope your endeavor is a success, as Enfield is the area that my relatives came from, and were so proud of Sincerely, THE GENEALOGY OF THE HARVEY'S OF ENFIELD. NEW YORK Researched and compiled by Karen Ginnever Dickson Harvey is an ancient name in England, where it was brought by Hervens de Bourges (anglicized Hervey of Bourges), when he came with William the Conqueror in 1066. He held in 1086 a great barony in Suffolk. Tradition says all the Harvey's in the U.S. descended from this Harvey, the Earl of Bristo in England (This was taken from "History of Nottingham, N.H. by the Rev. F. C. Cogswell (1878), pg. 209. Prior to the reign of Henry VIII (AD 1509), several families bearing the name Harvey, and said to be descended from a common ancestor, were settled in Somersetshire, England, in which county at that time many manors were held (according to the Doomsday Book). I found this info in "The History & Antiquities of the County of Somerset" by the Rev. John Collinson, Bath 1791. From "History of New York", and also from "The Harvey Book", on pgs. 700-703, found in the Hartford, Ct. library, there states the following: "Turner Harvey, born 1485, was a favorite of King Henry VI. He was a noted bowman and might warrior and at his death, no one could spring his bow. His arms were: Sable on a chevron between three longbows argent, as many pheons of the field Crest: A leopard, or langued gules, noling in paw, three arrows proper. Motto: "Faites ce que le honneur exige." After one especially ferrous battle, King Henry did not find his favorite archer and so had all the dead lined up so he could look and identify him for burial, but he could not locate him. That evening, Turner Harvey strolled up to King Henry with a shoulder of ham on each shoulder, very much alive. King Henry was so mad at Turner, who had put him in so much distress, that he had him banished from his court. (Later he had him reinstated.) This book states that William was his son, born abt. 1510, William's son was William, born 1554, died 1567 and was in high royal favor. His son Thomas, was born abt. 1585 and died prior to 1647. About the time of the birth of Thomas's first child, King James declared that he would make all men conform to the Established Church or drive them out of England. There has been records that have been found on my Harvey's, that indicate that they were Quakers. If so this would have made them unpopular in England, and so this could have been one of the reasons they immigrated to America. The first of the Harvey family that I can find and directly connect to my Harvey's, is Robert Harvey. Written in "American Ancestry", under Cornelius Burnham Harvey, found on pg. 24, Vol. VI; was the following: Robert Harvey, from Suffolkshire, sup. near Bramfield, Eng. had four children that came to America, 1740, Robert, Samuel, Margaret & Hannah. The following is an uncompleted account of these Harvey's of Suffolkshire. England. ROBERT HARVEY 1. Robert Harvey, b. about 1679, Suffolkshire, Eng., sup. near Bramfield. LDS library has him married to a Jannetje Aumack. Their children, probably all born Suffolkshire, Eng. (the info on Margaret's marriage was taken from, "New Jersey Colonial Documents: Marriage Licenses, pg. 197) - + 2 Robert - born 1720, and (1st), 1743, Drummond, (2nd), 2 Jan. 1764, Hannah White. + 3 Samuel 4 Margaret - in. John Lone (or Tone), I May, 1742, Monmouth Co. NJ, 5 Hannah 2 These children all came to America in 1740, to probably NH. I do not know what became of the families of Samuel and Hannah. It does not show that they came to NJ when Robert and Margaret did, and it doesn't show that they didn't. ( I have a lot of work on.these two.) In "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary War Patriots," Vol. 2, pg. 126, by Patricia Law Hatcher, I found several Harvey Rev. War. veterans. The ones that I am most interested in, are the ones from NH. There is a John - bur. gr. by McCoy Brook bridge, NH 41; and a Thomas -North Cem, Portsmouth, NH 34; also a Capt. Thomas - Village Cem, Surry. NH 35; and last Lt. John - Merrill Yard, Manchester, NH 32. If Samuel stayed in NH, these could be some of his family, and even more likely, I'll find more Harvey's buried around them. 2. Robert Harveys son of Robert Harvey (1), born 1720, Suffolkshire, Eng., emigrated 1740, in. (Ist), 1743, Drummond, (2nd) 2 Jan., 1762, Hannah White, Monmouth Co. He had by _ Drummond, 7 children listed to them, according to LDS records, but I think at least one or possibly two are not their's. They are credited with Peter, b. 25 Mar., 1739 and Jacob, b. 27 Mar., 1743. Both of these would be b. before Robert married Drummond in 1743. There could have been a wife before Drummond, or the birth dates can be wrong, as in his will taken from "NJ Colonial Documents, Calendar of Wills - 1771-1780, pg. 235, dated; " 1775, Jan. 28. , Robert Harvey, of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., yeoman (An independent farmer, especially, a member of a former class of small freeholding farmers below the gentry in England.); will of. Wife, Hannah, use of the plantation, and the goods that were given to her by her father, and 100 pounds. Son, Peter, 100 pounds. Son, Jacob, 50 pounds. Daughter. Elizabeth, wife of Henry Armstrong, five shillings. Son, Stephen, 50 pounds. Son, John, five shillings. Son, Thomas 50 pounds. Son. Samuel, all my lands, after my wife's death. Executors - friends, Gavin Dromin and Jacob White. Witnesses - Job Cook, Thomas White, William Cook. Proved April 12, 1779. 1776, Oct. 9. Inventory, 485 pounds, 12 shillings, & 9., made by Joseph Jackson and John Tucker. Lib. 21, p. 126." In 2 Jan. 1762, he married Hannah White, Monmouth. This was taken from "NJ Colonial Documents, Marriage Licenses, pg. 176." His death, because of his will, puts it between 1775 and 1779. There was born to Robert in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ the following: +6 Peter - b. 23 Mar., 1739 md. 18 Nov., 1767, Sarah Coorson, Monmouth. +7 Jacob - b. 27 Mar., 1743 md. 17 Nov., 1767, Elizabeth Allin, Monmouth. + 8 Stephen - chr. 29 Jun., 1746, md. Peggy Tone, b. 1746. + 9 Elizabeth - b. 22 Sep., 1751, md. 6 Sep., 1766, Henry Armstrong, b. abt. 1751. + 10 Thomas - b. 17 Nov., 1755, md. 10 Jan., 1775, Elizabeth Sutton, b, 3 Mar., 1757 + 11 John - b. abt. 1757. +12 Samuel - b. 19 Jul., 1759, md. Lydia Wooley, b. 26 Sep., 1764. Second generation: 10. Thomas Harvev, son of Robert Harvey (2), born in Screwsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ. (In American Ancestry Vol. VI, pg. 24). He was a iron smelter, afterward farmer and fisherman. They have him buried in NJ, but I have seen his grave in Buck Hill Cem., Schuyler Co., Town of Hector, NY. His wife's grave is right beside him, along with some of his children. He married Elizabeth Sutton, 10 Jan. 1775. She was b. either 3 Mar. 1757 (LDS library) or 13 Dec. 1758 (American Ancestry, pg. 24, Vol. VI. They probably came to Enfield, with their children, at the same time that his brother Samuel did, 1806. His land was around where his son, Reuben's farm was. I'm sure that the Buck Hill Cem. in on his land. Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Sutton, all born Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co. NJ: + 13 Asher - b. 1779. md. Mary , b. 1804. 12. Samuel Harvey, son of Robert Harvey (2), bom in Screwsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ. He inherited his father's farm by 12 Apr. 1779, ( in "Index of Wills, Monmouth Co., NT', it shows a Samuel Harvey - 13659 M. W. 1779, inv. 1779.) He was a Freeholder by 1790. He married Lydia Wooley before 1786, in Shrewsbury and they had 13 children, all but the last two born there. He sold his farm and moved his family to Scipio, Cayuga Co., NY in 1806. (In "History of Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins & Schuyler Counties, NY", Everts & Ensign, 1879, pg. 495, it states; "Samuel Haney moved from Monmouth Co., NJ to Scipio, and was there during the great eclipse in 1806". Of course he could have come earlier, but he was there in 1806. In 1808, he moved his family from Scipio to Enfield, Tompkins Co., NY. (It also states in this same book that "he came to this section (Town of Enfield) in 1808, lived on the town line, and kept a tavern many years. He was a justice of the peace for several years.") This is also stated in "Landmarks of Tompkins Co. NY" by Selkreg, 1894; - "Samuel Harvey came from New Jersey and kept a tavern in the town (of Enfield) many years" The following is their children all bom in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ, except the last two, maybe even the last four, depending on when they really came. + 17 Joseph Harvey - b. 10 Feb. 1786, m. Hannah Lovell, Sussex Co., NJ. + 18 Silas Wooley Harvey - b. 2 Jul. 1787, m. Abigail Lovell Sussex Co., NJ. 19 Mary Harvey - b. 18 Jun. 1789, twin to her sister Hannah. She may have m. John Slauson. There's evidence,(in Asahel Harvey's diaries) that refers to a Aunt Mary & Uncle John. She is called Aunt Maty when she dies, 8 Jan. 1869. The service was held in the Baptist church in Ithaca on the 10th. Uncle John had a vendue (Dutch term "vendu" for auction) in March, and moves to Albian, NY, where he may have married a Jane 20 Hannah Harvey - b. 18 Jun. 1789, twin to her sister Mary. I find in records in Tompkins Co. that a Edmund Weatherby married a Hannah Harvey. If this is the same Hannah, they moved to Chesterville, Ohio, 1833 and had 9 ch; Dennis - b. 1813, Henry, William, Edmund, Samuel, Jeremiah, Thomas, Polly, & Rhoda. From "Marriage licenses - NJ Colonial Documents", pg. 443,1 find a Silas Wooley who m. (1st) Margaret Husbands, 27 Apr. 1752m and (2nd) Mariah Bills, 21 Nov. 1754. In the 1830 census of Tompkins Co., NY, there is a Silas P. Wooley with 3 sons and 1 dau. I think he is Lydia's father, who came with his 4 family to Enfield, NY, probably about the same time as his daughter and her family. (Samuel and Lycua-s second son is named Silas Wooley, which according to the custom of the day, the I st son was named after the father's father and the second after the mother's father. The 1st daughter was named after the mother's mother, and the 2nd after the father's mother,) Of course here it is only clear on the second son. Samuel had 240 acres on Harvey Hill Road, that he divided between his two sons, Joseph and Silas. Both these brothers married daughters of Asahel Lovell, another pioneer settler that cam to the Enfield area about 1805, from Sussex, NJ, with his wife and 10 ch. Samuel died 22 May 1842, 82yrs, 10mos. and Lydia, died 7 Dec. 1857, 93yrs, 2mos. 10das. They are both buried beside each other in Buck Hill Cem. on Town Line Road, Enfield, NY. (His brother Silas had already married Hannah's sister, and he was living with them, til he married and had his own place.) To Joseph Harvey and Hannah Byram were born 10 children. Joseph's children all married and for the most part settled down to spend their lives in and around Enfield, NY. Joseph was a farmer and raised sheep. At his death the brothers split them up and Seth, the youngest son, unmarried, stayed on the farm with his mother.
