Dear Jack:
Your name as Historian for the Town of Enfield was recently given to me by
the Dewitt Historical Society.
I have several ancestors who at one time lived in Enfield Township in the
early 1800's and there are discrepancies in the information I have. I am writing
you to see if you can do research work for me on a fee basis or, if not, if you
have any names of someone in your area who might be able to help me.
The names I am interested in are Queal (Quail, Quayle), Bennett, Rolfe and
Wallace. I did write the Dewitt Historical Society and received a nice reply
from Nancy Greene -Young. She was able to confirm some information that I have;
namely, that 3 of my ancestors, Michael Queal, his wife Jane Wallace Queal and
her father, William Wallace, are buried at the Rolfe Cemetery. Nancy was not
sure, but believed she knew where that cemetery was located. I am wondering if
it would be possible to obtain photographs of those headstones.
I am enclosing a Family Group Record for Henry Mitchell Queal (son of
Michael Queal) and his family. He was my great great grandfather and his
daughter, Adel ia, my great grandmother. There seems to be inaccurate information
regarding her as my records show that she was born in Tompkins, Tioga County,
Pennsylvania. I checked with a Genealogical Society in Pennsylvania and found
that there is no Tompkins or Enfield Township in Pennsylvania. I think somewhere
along the way the records got confused between New York and Pennsylvania.
I am wondering if there is a town called Jackson and a town called Tompkins
in Tompkins county? I have to believe that Adelia Queal was born in Tompkins
County, New York, but at this point I cannot prove it.
I would also like to do some tracing on the other names above, but will not
bore you with that material now.
Any help you can give me will be most appreciated.
Sincerely,
Father: Michael QUEAL -168

Dear Joseph:
In reply to your request of August 17th 1993 you will find 13
potographs of Rolfe cemetery here in the Town of Enfield.
There are presently nine Towns in Tompkins County. None by the
name of Jackson or Tompkins,or has there ever been. The Town of Hector
was taken from Tompkins in 1854 when Schuyler County was formed. The
Town of Enfield was formed on March 16th 1821.
Can you be a little more specific with the other names you are
interested in?
Hope this is of some help!
Sincerely,
