McDaniels.
Daniel Rumsey age 21 and single entered service of Civil War in the fll of
1862.
He died at Little York, KY of sickness aquired in the service. He was buried at
Little York. No family mentioned.

INTRODUCTION
There were three major Rumsey families who had their beginnings in America
in the second half of the 17th century. Charles! R=o—, landed about 1665 at
Charleston, South Carolina, moved to New York, then Philadelphia before 1678,
finally settling at the head of the Bohemia River in Cecil County, Maryland.
His father, Col. John Rumsey, was imprisoned in 1686 for his part in the Rye
House Plot. His mother was Anna, daughter of Sir John Ashburnham, groom of the
Bedchamber to Charles I and II. (Ref: H. St.John Rumsey of England - letters
and chart 1953). The children of Charles were: John, Mary (d.y.), Prudence,
Margaret, Grace, Elizabeth, Patience, Mary, Charles, William and Edward.
Charles is said to have come from Wales.
Perhaps the most famous descendant of Charles' Rumsey was James, inventor
of the steamboat w i' h was demonstrated on the Potomac River for George
Washington, 3 Dec I78 , a few years before Fulton propelled his boat up the
Hudson. James RuA 's steamboat was operated by taking in water at the bow
and pushing it out the stern. (For the beginnings of this family in America,

The second was Robert' Rumsey, who settled in Fairfield, Connecticut by 9
Feb 1669/70, when he recorded a homelot by grant from the town of Fairfield.
Robert' was ancestor of this compiler, and was probably not very closely
related to Charles' of Maryland back in England or Wales, though there has not
been time or opportunity to check the various conflicting reports of Robert's
ancestry. The children of Robert' Rumsey and his wife, Rachel Frost, were:
Benjamin, Rachel, Isaac, Daniel, Abigail_, Elizabeth and Robert. Most of the
family remained in Connecticut until the time of the migrations before and
after the Revolution, when many of them went to Vermont, whence they spread out
toward the west. However, Isaac2 and Daniell apparently were in New Jersey, as
shown by the following deductions by Donald Lin s Jacobus in 1943 Additions and
Corrections to (his] History and Genealocry of the Families of Old Fairfield,
p.29.
"Isaac (vol.I:512) of Fairfield, New England, 'now of Salem Town,' bought
land in Salem, N.J., 14 June 1698; "of Salem Town, planter," mortgaged 16 Sept.
1700; and on 28 June 1703 sold to Robert Rumsey, both of Salem Town (N.J.
Archives 21: 623, 627, 639). His brother Daniel (Vol.I:510) may be the Daniel
Rumsey of Maningtoii, S.' Co., N.J., who d. 1718 leaving a widow Grace (ibid.
23, Wills 1:398). Daniel left children Daniel and Ruth, mentioned 1733 in the
will of Thomas Smith of Maninton Precinct, Salem Co., who m. their mother Grace
(ibid. 30, Wills 2:444).
"This N.J. connection raises the question whether their father, Robert
(Vol.I:510), founder of the Fairfield family, may not have been brother of
William Rumsey 'of-Elsenburgh, W.J., cordwainer,' who with wife Ruth purchased
25 Sept. 1680 part of a tract near Manhattan Creek. William was of 'Manneton
Creek,' 1687 and 1688, of "Salem Town, shoemaker," 1691, of Manneton Creek,
1697, and made will 5 May 1702, proved 15 Sept. 1702, calling himself of
Manneton, cordwainer, and giving all his property to his wife Ruth. (N.J.

"William was prob. father of Robert of Salem, N.J., who d. 1713 leaving widow
Elizabeth (d. 1714, sister of Rinier van Hyst) and dau. Ruth (who apparently d.
soon after her father's dent` (ibid. 23, Wills 1:3Robert would thus be
named after his Fairfield uncle, and would be first co sin of Isaac from
Fairfield with whom he had land dealings." (For thy. rst few generations of

The third Rumsey family stemmed from Symon or Simon' Rumsey who settled at
Southold, Suffolk Co, Long Island, where the first record of him appears in
1686. His children were Hannah, Mary, Rachel, Simon and Sarah. According to
family tradition, "Symon was born in Wales, lived on the Island of Guernsey,
left home with three brothers, Joseph, Isaac and James, and probably a sister,

tradition also claims that they left home very young, because of disagreement
with their step -mother. Quoting further from Shelford: "First records: Symon',
1686; Joseph and Isaac, Long Island Indian disturbance, 1690, and service under
Thompson in King William's War. Joseph and Isaac are supposed to have setticl
in Salem, N.J. (Moore's Index of Southold, 1868)."
Symon's brother, James Rumsey; was unmarried and is supposedly buried in
the family burying ground on the old Phineas Rumsey farm, though there is no
stone for him there. Whether Symon had brothers Joseph and Isaac who settled
in Salem, N.J. is open to question, in the light of Jacobus' deductions about
Robert's son Isaac as quoted above. Sarah Rumsey, the "probable" sister of
Symon, married John Swazey on 1 Jan 1707, and had children: Dorothy, Susannah,
Mary, Joshua and Phebe. (Benjamin Franklin Swazey: Genealoav of the Swazev
Family (1910), p.35.) To have come over with Symon by 1686, she would have tc
have been a baby at the time, or else married1, to in life. (There was a
Joseph Rumsey in a 1686 court record of Fairfie d, Conn, who was not a son of
Robert of Fairfield. Could he have have been father of Sarah? and have been
the Joseph who took part in the Indian Wars on Long Island?)
Symon' Rumsey was probably not closely connected with Charles' of Maryland,
but may have been a little more closely related to Roberti of Fairfield, since
they settled across Long Island =^•.nd from each other. Work done by others for
my father in the 1920s, on the ancestry of Robert, would indicate this
possibility. But, the fact that several errors in that work have been
discovered since then, would lead one to question other parts which have not
yet been proven. It was stated there that Roberti, who came from England
rather than Wales of family tradition, was a son of Robert Rumsey and Matilda
Sherfield, whose children were: Matilda b 1632, Joseph b-1634, Samuel b 1636,
Simon b 1640, and Roberti b 1645. The date of Robert's birth could be
approximately correct as his first child was born in 1667. But this Simon was
probably too old to be the one who settle at Southold.
In 1686, the family of Symon Rumsey of Long Island consisted of one male
and three females, (New York Genealoaical and Biographical Record Vol.30:122).
Assuming that Symon did not marry before the age of 20, and that two of the
three females in his household were daughters, he was probably married by about

Symonl Rumsey was said to have/been born in 'dales, and to have come to
America from the Isle of Guernse? (see In4roduction). The first records of Symon
are found in a list of names within the township of Southold, Suffolk Co., Long
Island, N.Y!"''Here his family, consisted of one male and three females, presumably
himself, his first wife Mary, and his daughters Hannah and Mary. (N.Y.Geneal.&
Biog.Record 30:122) In 1698 he is listed with his wife Mary, and daughter many,
"Junjr." (Docuemtary History of N.Y. 1:455) He called himself "mariner" in 171-1,
in was a large land owner, having purchased various parcels of land in 1699 from
Joseph Wickham, Samuel :finds, Joshua Hobart, Joseph Hart. In 1711 he purchased
from Joseph Bagley and from John Armstrong, and later )fr m Charles Booth in 1713,
Joshua Hempstead in 1717, and Israel Parshall in 1718.;(arry Hawkins Smith).
The earlier purchases were for land in Aquebogue, and he was one of the founders

Symons name is written and indexed as Ramsey in the recording of his will..
(Libre 9,page 417 - Hall of Records New York City). In was written 29 Mar. 1719,
and probated Sept. 26, 1723.
"PJ THE NAIM OF GOD, AMEN, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and nineteen I Symon Rumsey of Southold in $affulk County on Nassau Island in
the province of New York in America.. Yeonan, being sick and weak but of sound
mind and perfect memory, blessed be God --do make and ordain this my last will and
testament in the manner and fora following: --that is to say principally I humbly
resign ray soul into the hands of my merciful Gad that gave it and my body I com-
mit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter
named and as concerning my earthly estate wherewith God has blessed me, I do de-
vise and bequeath in the following manner, after my just debts which owe either
in Law or equity are duely paid.
"Imprimis, I give and devise all my land, arable, pastures, meadows whatsoever
together with all my houses, mills, and tenant houses unto my son Symon Rumsey
and to his heirs and assigns forever.
"Secondly, I give and bequeath to my son Symon Rumsey all my movable estate
as household goods, cattle of all kind, my two negroes. Sue and Prince (a woman
and a boy) and chattles what so ever except such goods as are hereafter in this
last will given and bequeathed to my daughters or othb r:,
"Thirdly, my will, and meaning is that I do hereby oblige my said son Symon
after my decease well and sufficiently to maintain and keep my loving wife wary
with meat drink and apparel during her life in so long as she remain a widow,
but if she marry again I give and bequeath unto her Ten pounds and her bed to be
delivered and paid unto her or her assigns by my said son Symon Rumsey.
"Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rachel one feather Bedd with
sufficient furniture for the same and I also give and bequeath unto my said dau-
ghter the sum of Ten Pounds Lawful money of New York to be paid unto my said
Daughter Rachel (out of my estate) or her assigns on the day of her marriage
and my will and mind is that my said son Symon shall maintain her my said Daughter
Rachel with Meat, Drink and Lodging until she marry and .so long as she shall see
cause to live with my said son Symon Rumsey.
"Fifthly, my will and mind is that my said son; Symon Rumsep do and shall suffer
my daughter Sarah to live with him and I do hereby oblige him to take care of
her and her Education and that he shall maintain her, the said Sarah till she
come of age or marry and also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Sarah,
one feather Bed and furniture for the same and likewise two cows at and upon
the day of her marriage or when she comes of age or the value of two cows as
afore said.
"Sixthly, I give and bequeath to Mary the Wife of Daniel Corwin she executor
or assigns two cows.
"Seventhly, I give and bequeath to Hannah Corrin the wife of Theophilus Corwin
her executor or assigns likeness (likewise?) two cows or what more my said son
Symon shall see cause to give them or either of them.
"Lastly, I constitute, make and ordain my son Symon Rumsey my only and sole
Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former or other
wills and testaments before this time and ratifying and confirming this and none
other to be my last will and testament whereof I have here unto set my hand and
