ENFIELD COMMEMORATIVE
COMMITTEE UPDATE....
It is sadly noted the loss of
Commemorative Committee Member
Nina Linton. We will greatly miss
Nina's wisdom and knowledge in our
discussions of Enfield. We have
discussed coming up with a memorial
project in honor of both Nina and Nora
Dodd (past committee members). A
memorial page in the Enfield History
Book was suggested. A photograph of
the quilt and wall hanging that Nina
was working on for the
Commemorative Celebration will be
placed in the Enfield History Book.
The Enfield Commemorative
Committee voted to moved their
meetings to every 4th Tuesday of the
each month. Town Historian, Jack
Hubbell will be at the Enfield Town Hall
every 3rd Tuesday of each month to
help anyone wishing to research,
reminisce, etc.
Most of the committee meetings
have been filled with discussion on
Enfield throughout the years.
Helen Smith gave a presentation
of the trivet that the Commemorative
Committee will have made and sold as
a fund raising project for the
Commemorative Celebration. A map of
Enfield with a picture of the Enfield
Falls Mill is on the trivet. The title on
the trivet is "Six Mile Square Town -
1821 - 1996". The trivet will be
printed in black and white. It will go on
2
sale in 1995.
At our March 23 meeting the
committee asked Gary Fisher to be
General Chairperson. . Gary has
accepted this position and his
membership will be presented to the
Enfield Town Board at their first
meeting in April.
Blanche Stout has volunteered to
help arrange the One/Two Room School
House Reunion. She will be posting
signup sheets within the town for
people to let us know if they are
interested in this reunion.
The committee is looking for
people to help out with research for the
Town of Enfield History Book in the
following categories: Baseball, girl
scouts, teen groups, 4-H, Home Bureau
Units, Military, transporation, the arts,
businesses old and new. Contact Sue
Thompson if you are interested
(272-6412).
ARTIFACTS WANTED
Ellie Hobbie is currently gathering
information on pre -Iroquois and Iroquois
existence within the town of Enfield.
This information will be used in writing
the Iroquois chapter in the Enfield
History Book. If you have or know -
about any artifacts involving this group,
give Ellie a call at 272-2424.
HEROIC HISTORY IN THE MAKING
No doubt many are still digging out
from that fabulous snow storm we had
the weekend of March 13, 1993. The
Commemorative Committee would like
to hear about any adventures you might
have experienced during this "snowy"
time. A lot of us forget that history is
not just what occurred in the past
many years ago but also what is
currently occurring.
A big snowstorm many years ago
had little effect on people's lives. They
stayed home because most peoples
jobs were at the home and they raised
most of their own food. People just
didn't think of going someplace every
day. A resident of Enfield remembers
they would go out and shovel the snow
off the roads by hand. Sometimes they
would just wait a few days until the
snow melted. Schools were always
open because there were no buses,
everyone walked to school. Harry
Willis' recalls a time in the early 1900's
when he skated to school. He started
at his grandmother's home on
Applegate Road, where the Hillendale
golf course is now and glided off to the
little schoolhouse on Iradell Road. The
snow had melted and then the
temperature dropped and everything
froze again. Ice covered everything so
youngsters skated through the fields to
school.
Mrs. Seth Cowan wrote in her
diary, between 20 and 30 inches of
snow was dumped on Tompkins
County on Friday, February 13, 1914,
There has not been anybody on the
road today. The mail did not come.
January 27, 1915 it was 28
below zero.
The snow of January 11, 1922
had the same depth of 1925 but
included a small crisis - a baby was
due. Three days after the storm people
began to travel some on the road, but
the snow was deep. Sunday, January
14, 1922 Nora Dodd tried to go to the
hospital with horse and sled -they
didn't make it.. they ended up
stopping at a friend's house just
outside of town and Nora had her baby
there.
March 14, 1993 Enfield again had
a "snow storm baby". It's not
everyday that Jim Dew and Dick McFall
help deliver babies. Thanks to their
knowledge of handling snow plows
through the deepest of drifts from
Bostwick Road to the Tompkins
Community Hospital the Chase family
now has a new member of their family.
Thanks Jim and Dick... P.S. let us
know if you had any other adventures
during this timel
January 30, 1925 the snow was 3
feet deep. By February 4, 1925 the
men finally cleared a path to town -
Ithaca.
The favorite of the Ithaca Journal'
article was the end, "Nowadays a
three-foot snow doesn't mean a thing.
They keep the roads open and we get
mail every day". I guess that means
Tompkins County made real history on
March 15, 1993 ... there was no mail
because of the snow...

WOMEN AND LIFE IN 1875
Mary Rolfe2 was born October 141''
1797. Jonathan Rolfe her father
was among the earliest settlers in
Enfield - 1806. Mary had two brothers,
Ruben and Ephraim along with a sister,
Sarah. Mary sewed for a living; her
residence was in Ithaca but she .
returned to Enfield just after the new
year of 1875 when her nephew was
left with a motherless baby. She 3
moved in with him to care for the child,;
Cassie, and care for his house. At that -
time she was 78 years old and
unmarried. Mary wrote in her diary of
1875 about the weather, mentions
local deaths, and talks about the people
she works and sews for. She wrote of
- opening the window and giving the
room a good sweeping; of sewing till 1
o'clock in the morning and then getting
up before 5 o'clock to finish the
sewing; of gathering up clothes, getting
the water, bringing in rinse water from
the old well and then hanging the
clothes outside; of baking a {Lincoln
cake, a loaf of bread and ginger
cookies. Although Mary was always
busy with Baby Cassie and housework
she took time out to go to morning and
evening services at the Baptist Church.

*LINCOLN CAKE
The American nation has made
President Abraham Lincoln a national
folk hero. We chose him as number
one on the great presidents list. We
mourned him for weeks after he was
assassinated on Friday April 14, 1865.
But the grandest honor we gave him
was to formally observe his birthday as
a whole nation. The first formal
observance of President Lincoln's
birthday was held in the Capitol
building in Washington on February 12,
1866. It is therefore natural for the
nation to honor this man with his own
cake recipe. After lengthy research the
only cake that was noted in various
cook books called a Lincoln cake was
that of a sponge cake. The cake was
made, spread with jelly or jam then
made into a roll and iced with a mocha/
chocolate icing. The icing was then
roughed over with a fork so that the
icing made the roll look like a log. Let
us know if you have another version of
a Lincoln cake.

PATCHWORK - Patchwork is good
economy. It is indeed a foolish waste
of time to tear cloth into bits for the
sake of arranging it anew in fantasic
figures; but a large family may be kept
out of idleness, and a few shillings
saved, by thus using scrpas of gowns,
curtains, etc. (1838) '

THE SURROUNDING OF
THE BAPTIST CHURCH
(written and researched by Sue
Thompson - 10/92; edited 3/21/93)
In 1842 a house of worship was
completed in Enfield Center at the cost
of $1,300. This house of worship was
the First Baptist Church
of Enfield, located on the east side of
Enfield Main Road (Rt. 327) going north
towards Trumansburg. The first church
bell in the town of Enfield was hung in
the First Baptist Church belfry on April
1870.
The parsonage was built in 1877
at an expense of about $1,500. The
parsonage was located on the west
side of Enfield Main road (Rt. 327)
going north towards Trumansburg.
In 1881 the church was moved
across to the west side of Enfield Main
Road (Rt. 327) and rebuilt where it now
currently stands.
In 1942, the sheds for protection of
horses and carriages which stood
across the road from the church and
also north of the church were removed.
South of the Enfield Baptist Church
is located "Teeter's Hotel". This
building has held many names, the
"VanMarter Hotel" was one of the first.
According to the Proceedings of the
Board of Supervisors of the County of
Tompkins, from 1858 through 1874
the Town of Enfield rented the
"VanMarter Hotel" for town business
and elections. The rent was listed paid
to Elizabeth VanMarter. In the 1868
New York State Business Directory
Aaron W. VanMarter was listed as
Hotel Keeper in Enfield Center. [Note:
Cemetery records state that Elizabeth
and Aaron were husband and wife.]
In 1875 Moses L. Harvey was
owner of the hotel -hall, "Harvey Hotel".
From 1876 through 1889 the town
again paid rent to use the hall for town
business and elections. A picture, in
the possession of the Enfield Town
Historian, was drawn of the "Enfield
Centre Hotel". The picture was dated
March 20, 1879 and indicated Moses
L. Harvey was proprietor.
There was no reference given
between 1890 and 1891 to the town
using the hall. Town Auditors in 1892
met at Harvey Hall. The budget of
1893, indicated that the town paid rent
again for use of Harvey Hall for
business and elections.
Sometime between 1893 and
1894 the Harvey Hall changed hands
over to Frank Teeter. From 1894
through 1907 the town rented
"Teeter's Hall" for $25 a year. In 1907
note was made in the budget that
dinner was served to jurors at the
"Teeter Hotel" for $ 14.00. 1908
through 1915 no indication was given
to the hall being used by the town. In
1916 the town started rental payments
for "Teeter's Hall". 1922 was the last
date noted that the town rented the
hall. Throughout the years many
dances were held on the "floating"
dance floor at the hall. The hall in
1992 is now used as a private home.
Northeast of the Baptist Church is
located the first Enfield Town Halt. In
1923 the town bought a small building
called the "Pigs Ear" from a "private
men's group". The Pigs Ear was
moved from West Enfield Center Road
to Enfield Main Road. An addition was
built on to the Pigs Ear to make it
bigger for the towns use. Election
booths were built permanently inside
the building. The Town Hall was used
not only for town , business and
elections, but for card playing parties
and other social events. it was told
that some participants of these card
parties remembered, "entering the
Town Hall and one person would also
have to light the kerosene lanterns for
reading light". The Town Hall is now
used for storage items belonging to
various social groups in the town.
South of the Baptist Church is
located the Grange Hall. In February
1923 the Enfield Valley Grange No.
295 explored the possibility of building
their own meeting hall. Land was
purchased south of the Baptist Church
from Harry Willis in 1925. The building
of the new Grange Hall was contracted
out to Bryon Davenport. Mr. Davenport
was known at the time for building
quite a few building in Tompkins
County. While he was working on the
Grange Hall he bought and lived in the
house south of the Presbyterian
Cemetery, Enfield Center and Enfield
Main Road. August 24, 1926 the hall
was completed and dedication
ceremonies were held for the first
Grange Hall in Enfield. The Hall has not
only been used for Grange meetings
but for annual Election Day Dinners,
Fall Harvest Festivals, and many other
fund raising events.
East of the Baptist church and south
of the first Town Hall, is the Enfield
Town Barn (Town Shed). Building
material was purchased by the town
from Cotton and Hanlon in 1930. The
material was used to build a town shed
to be used for storage of town
equipment. The wiring for the building
was done by Courtright Electric. Fire
8
insurance was purchased for the town
buildings that year at a cost of $18.92.
The Town Barn is now used for town
storage.
South of the Baptist Church
between the Grange Hall and Teeters
Hall Enfield's first Fire Hall is located.
As the town grew concern for better
fire protection grew. A group of men,
in 1947, met with the Enfield Town
Board regarding fire protection for the
town. February 1948, the town had its
first official Enfield Volunteer Fire
Company. June 15, 1948, ground was
broken and building started on the first
Fire Hall for the town of Enfield.
January 30, 1949 the first section of
concrete floor was poured. February of
1949, an oil burner was installed, along
with the electricity for the Fire Hall. By
July 1949 the first fire truck was
sitting in a newly completed fire Hall.
In 1989 (1990) the fire hall was
turned over to the town. It is now
referred to as the Enfield Community
Building. The Enfield Community
Council and the Enfield Town Board
operates this building as a community
center. Groups such as, Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, Teen Youth Group, Enfield
Historical Society, and 4-H hold their
monthly and weekly meetings there.
West of the Baptist Church is the
second Fire Hall built in 1989.
North of the Baptist Church the
second Enfield Town Hall is located.
Property was purchased by the town in
March 1966. A public hearing was
held June 1966 on the building of a
new Town Hall. That same year
Stevenson Contractors built the new
Town Hall. This included the current
town offices and town highway offices
and garage. An addition on the south
side of the Town Hall was built for
more storage of equipment in 1976.
By 1977 the addition was completed.

COLLECTING HOUSES AND FAMILY
HISTORIES
In the capacity of Enfield Town
Historian, Jack Hubbell has initiated
two historic projects in the town of
Enfield. These projects he is
continually working on and updating
with the enthusiastic cooperation of
Enfield Town Residents. The purpose
of these projects is to keep an updated
history file of our town buildings and
the people who inhabit them.
PROJECT I. BUILDINGS
Project I consists of Jack collecting
houses for the Historian's Collection.
The project includes finding out what
kinds of materials the houses are made
of and their age. Finding out about the
people who built them and first lived in
them and lives in them now. Taking
photographs of the houses and
property around them. All this
information is placed in individual files
for each address. 0 0
PROJECT II. FAMILIES
The second project is to collect Enfield

IN o SCHOOL INFORMATION
LEAVING THE BUILDING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY: Any student that
leaves the building during the school day must be signed out by a parent or guardian.
If you are picking your child up early, for any reason, you must first stop in the school
office and sign your child out of school. This procedure is for the safety of our children.
Strangers do enter schools. We are responsible for your children until they go home
at the end of the school day or are signed out of school by you. We take this
responsibility very seriously.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL: All visitors to the school must first stop in the school
office before going to the classrooms; this includes parents, work crews, adults helping
with field trips. This is a district wide procedure enforced for the safety of our children.
ANNOUNCEMENTS SENT HOME: Enfield school sends home only one day each
week. Wednesday is ANNOUNCEMENT DAY. The purpose is to provide improved
communication between home and school. Each child will have a large envelope with
his/her name on it that will be used to send information home. Please make sure your
child/children return the envelope to school the next day. We will appreciate your help
with this system. Announcements may be sent home on other days only if necessary.
SCHOOL WIDE PRINCIPLES: The following are the principles that guide our
approach to management and discipline at Enfield. These were developed with the
participation of the entire staff. Teachers use these as a guide to develop their
classroom rules. Every classroom teacher has his/her class rules which they will
discuss with you at Open House / Curriculum Night, or send home with Class
Expectations forms.
WE RESPECT ALL CHILDREN AND ADULTS
WE TAKE PRIDE IN OURSELVES
WE TAKE PPRIDE IN OUR SCHOOL
WE RESPECT EVERYONE'S PROPERTY
Parents will be contacted immediately in case of severe misbehavior. This includes
unsafe behavior that causes injury to another child, property damage, insubordination
and fighting. Please note that hats are not to be worn in school during school hours.
Also, the chewing of gum, because of custodial (clean up) problems, is also not
allowed.
ATTENDANCE: If your child will be absent on a school day please phone the school
office by 9:30 a.m. If you do not call the morning of an absence, the school secretary
will attempt to reach you by phone before the end of the day. When your child is
absent, please send in a dated , written excuse( for legal records) on the day your
child returns to school, even if you have called the school to report him absent. If a
child is tardy (late), he/she should report to the office before going to the classroom.

PARENT -TEACHER ASSOCIATOOM (PTA)
MISSION STATEMENT
Recognizing that every child deserves excellence in education and a quality life, the
New York State Parent Teacher Association's obligation is to maintain its commitment
and service to all children and its diverse membership through increased parent
awareness, advocasy, education and involvement.
-- Adopted by New York State PTA Board of Managers
August 10, 1990
The Enfield School PTA invites you to join our organization and to attend the
monthly meetings. Attendance at monthly meetings is not required, but encouraged.
Anyone who cares about children - parents, teachers, grandparents, or any other
member of the community can join the PTA. Many exciting changes are occurring or
are in the planning stages (e.g., Compact for Learning, site- based management) and
we are encouraging more parent and community input into these issues. Your ideas
and participation are important and welcomed. Please join with us in helping to plan
for the future of education in our community.
The PTA helps support school wide activities such as field trips, and visiting
artists and authors. It supplements and purchases playground equipment,
supplemental literature (Weekly Readers and classroom magazines) and helps meet
the costs of supplementary programs at the school.

'Child care is provided at no charge. We do ask that you call the office (274-2221)
and give the school secretary the number of children that you will be bringing to the
meeting . This gives us an idea of how many care providers we will need for each
meeting. This is not mandatory; do not stay away from the meeting because you were
too busy to call on a certain day.
