History of Rumsey Cemetery
History of Rumsey Cemetery (Sue Thompson – Enfield Town Historian – August 2015)
Rumsey Cemetery is located on Trumbulls Corners Road inthe Town of Enfield. It is located on
privately owned property (Jeffrey Juber).
There are no known records of Rumsey Cemetery in Town of Enfield except for the gravestone
recordings of Alan Chaffee, Newfield Town Historian, in 1980’s, and Dora Pope Warden from the
1920’s.
The first reference found in the deed’s of the property where the cemetery is was January 1, 1900,
property sold to Frank S. Stevenson from Lucy Gray and others (Deed book 153 page 571 Tompkins
County Clerk’s Office,Ithaca, NY). It stated the a piece of land be “…reserve ascertain plot upon said
premises formerly and now used as a burial ground”.
This property was passed back forth between members of the Rumsey Family, Jonathan, James, Mary J.
and others. Many of the owners are now buried in the cemetery.
The oldest headstone is that of George Nobles born March 10, 1819 and died September 20, 1821. Son
of Squire J. and Hannah Rumsey Nobles. Squire J. was son of John and Elizabeth Nobles (below) and
Hannah daughter of James and Martha Horton Rumsey (below).
Approximately 45 headstones can be located with the estimated 60 names recorded. There are
3“double” headstones in the cemetery.
Interesting facts (maybe)
Jacob Rumsey and his wife Sarah Curtis son of Isaac Rumsey and Jane Arilla (Marrilla J. Smith)
daughter toIsaac are buried here. Isaac built one of the first known Mills at Enfield Falls in 1817. This
mill burned in the 1830’s and was replaced by Jared Treman, grandfather of Robert H. Treman.
James and Martha Horton Rumsey and John and Elizabeth Nobles some of the earliest settlers of
Enfield, 1806 and 1809 are buried here.
The Nobles, District 10, “Little Red School House” was named for the Nobles family who
owned the property.

HISTORY OF MILITARY LOT NUMBER 73[1]
By J. Arthur Noble[2]and Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian (edited 2015)
NOTE: Reference listing of Rumsey Cemetery, Town of Enfield, Trumbulls Corners Road, Town of
Enfield Historian Files, Enfield Town Hall, 168 Enfield Main Road, Ithaca, NY.)
On June 8, 1809, John and Elizabeth Nobles[3] (Rumsey Cemetery) purchased of William Ross,
of Wilksbarre, Pennsylvania, 400 acres of Military Lot No. 73 in the present town of Enfield. At that
time the land was a part of the town of Ulysses. Lot No. 73 had been balloted to John Padrick, an
American Revolutionary War soldier of the 2nd New York Regiment, Graham " Company. John
Padrick died in the war on May 31,1777. Pursuant to a resolution granting patents to deceased soldiers,
the patent to Lot No. 73, less 100 acres reserved to the State, was delivered to James Abeel, for Thomas
Collins, Administrator of John Padrick; was conveyed to James Sutton, of Exeter, Luzerne County,
Pennsylvania; by him conveyed to William Ross and Putnam Catlin, both of Wilkesbarre,
Pennsylvania,on December 11, 1789; by Putnam Catlin to William Ross, excepting 150 acres, more or
less, on May 6, 1806 and by Will Ross to John Nobles.
In the fall of 1809, Timothy B.[4] and Squire J., sons of John and Elizabeth, journeyed to Enfield
from Newport Township, Pennsylvania, to look over the property of Lot No.73. They then returned
home.
In the spring of 1810, John, Elizabeth and three sons, Timothy B., Charles, and Squire J., moved
to Enfield to settle on the Military Lot No.73. The family came up the Susquehanna River to Owego
Settlement, then by the newly constructed road to Ithaca and from Ithaca to the property in Enfield on
the Indian trail that then ran past the southern boundary of the property from Ithaca to Montour
Fall". John and his sons cleared off a plot of land and built a log cabin on a site across from the present
location of the old Nobles District School House(Little Red School)[5] in what was then entirely forest
land. The balance of the land was then gradually cleared of trees and stumps for cultivation.
John (1752 – 1832) and Elizabeth (1752 –1827) Nobles are both buried in Rumsey Cemetery,
Trumbulls Corners Road, Enfield, New York.
The Nobles family had neighbors when they moved to Enfield. The James[6]and Martha Horton
Rumsey[7] family[8] came to Enfield in 1806. James was a Revolutionary War xe"Revolutionary War"
soldier [End Note[i]]and carpenter, who had purchased about 100 acres of land one-half mile east of the
Nobles property. On November 3,1815 Hannah Rumsey[9],daughter to James, married Squire J.
Nobles. They built a house "Wafer Place on the land deeded to him in 1825. This house was removed
in 1893 by Anson Nobles, grandson of Squire J., to make way for the present old homestead structure.
James (1759 – 1872) and Martha Horton(1765-1827) Rumsey were buried in the Rumsey
Cemetery on Trumbulls Corners Road.
Arthur S. Nobles and family lived in the Wafer house until the Victorian"Homestead House" was
built in 1895-96. Before it was built, the old Squire J. house was still there, located about 25-30' west of
the location of the new"homestead house". As far back as Hulse can remember, the old Squire J. house,
a story-and-a half structure, was vacant until finally torn down by Anson. He said that the doors were
open and it was in a poor state for years before it was demolished. He also said that there were no
remains of the other house that was located east of the old Squire J. house. According to"Landmarks of
Tompkins, the road running in front of the "Homestead House" was once known as "Nobles Street"[10].

Between 1811 and 1827, John Nobles disposed of the property in parcels, conveying 60 acres in
the northeast corner to Charles in 1811; 90 acres in the northwest corner to Timothy B. in 1813; the
Homestead Farm of 100 acres, on which John resided, to Squire J. in 1825; three smaller parcels,
totaling about 60 acres to parties outside the family at various times during this period; and the balance
of the property to Charles in 1827 about two weeks after the death of wife Elizabeth, October 3, 1827 at
the age of 75 years. Elizabeth was buried in the old Rumsey Cemetery, located about a half mile due
east of the homestead (Trumbulls Corners Road). John Nobles died on January 19, 1832 at the age of 79
years, and was buried beside his wife. Two sons Joshua, July 1, 1827 – August 8, 1828 and George
H., March 10,1819 – September 20, 1821 are also buried in Rumsey Cemetery.
June 4, 1825, Timothy and Joanna Nobles, his wife, deeded 90 acres to Roger Brown. A
discharge of this mortgage was recorded on November 25, 1830. After that, all local records relating to
Timothy ceased. On February 25, 1836,Charles Nobles and Lavina, his wife deeded the last of his
property in Lot No.73 to Pardon Brown. This was the last record of Charles in Tompkins.

consisting of 3 males and 1 female under 10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 female 26-44
and 1 male over 45.
In the fall of 1805, James and his sons James(1792-1869 Rumsey Cemetery) and John (1789-1814
Rumsey Cemetery) went to Ulysses,Seneca Co, where he had purchased 100 acres of land, later owned
by his son George (1808-1898 Rumsey Cemetery).(Tompkins County was formed 1817 from Cayuga
and Seneca counties, and part of Ulysses became Enfield, Tompkins Co.) They cleared a small plot and
sowed some what. The following spring they built a small log cabin, and James moved his family into it
in the winter of 1807. He was active in town affairs, Commissioner of Enfield Schools 1821– 1822, and
as a carpenter hehelped build the first church at Enfield Center.[i]
In the 1810 census, James Rumsey was listed in Ulysses, Seneca Co. He and hiswife were both over 45.
With them were 2 boys under 10 (George, Horton [1802-1824]),1 boy and 1 girl 10-15
(Solomon[1797-1860 Rumsey Cemetery], Hannah), 4 males and 1 female 16-24 (Joshua [1794-1862
Rumsey Cemetery],James, John, Jonathan [1784-1872 Rumsey Cemetery], Elizabeth
[1787-1864(Betsey) Rumsey Cemetery).
He and James Jr were both listed in Ulysses, Tompkins Co, in 1820. James Sr and his wife were over 45,
and they had with them 1 male 10-15, and 1 male 16-18,the age subject to militia duty.
A deed in Tompkins Co land records, dated 31 May 1813 (before Tompkins Co was formed), showed
that James Rumsey of Seneca Co purchased from Egbert Benson, executor of the will of John Lawrence
of New York City, 100 acres in Ulysses (rec1832). He bought another 74 acres in 1821 from Ann L.
Hawkes by attorney (rec1826).
The 1825 census of Enfield, Tompkins Co, lists James Rumsey as having a household of only 2 males
and 1 female. James was too old to be subject to militia duty, but he was entitled to vote. One male had
died within the year(Horton), making the second male George.
In 1826 James Rumsey sold the 74 acre piece to his son James Jr. And on 20 Apr 1826, James Rumsey
of Enfield conveyed 25 acres in Section 74 to his son George, subject to the life estate of James. His first
wife Martha died the following year, December 26, 1765 – June 11, 1827 aged 61 years buried in
Rumsey Cemetery, Enfield NY.The date he married his second wife Martha is not yet known.
James Rumsey Senior was in his 60s in the 1830 census of Enfield, Tompkins Co.With him were 1 male
(George) and 1 female (prob a servant) in their 20s.
In the 1835 census of Enfield, under his name were listed 3 males and 2 females. Only one of these
males was subject to militia duty, but all three were eligible to vote. One of the females was unmarried
and between the ages of 16 and 45. This would be Martha Sutphen (1816-1846 Rumsey Cemetery),
daughter of James' second wife Martha, who was to marry his son George. The third male was probably
a farm laborer. James had 55 acres of land under cultivation.
In 1840 James Rumsey was in his 70s. With him were 1 male 30-39 (George Rumsey), 1 female 20-29
(Martha Sutphen) and 1 female 70-79. This last was a little older than the Martha Sutphen in the 1830
census (see next p.) who was 50-59.
Following the death of James, April 4,1759 - August 22, 1842 age of 83 years buried in Rumsey
Cemetery, Enfield NY[i],his heirs disposed of their shares of his property between the years 1842 and
1855, most selling their shares to George. On 26 Sep 1842, Martha Rumsey of Enfield, relict of James
Rumsey, gave a quit claim for her dower rights, to Jonathan Rumsey 1784-1872 Rumsey Cemetery,

FATHER NOTES: Simon Rumsey
General:
Victor E. Shelford states "His sons David and Jonathan signed the Revolutionary Pledge. David, James and Moses served in the Orange
County Revolutionary Militia. There is a tradition that his oldest son John went to Seneca County because of Tory sympathy. (There was a
John in the Westchester Revolutionary Militia, however). John mortgaged his land to his father, Simon III in 1777, and deeded it to him in
1785. Simon deeded it to Diness Rider in 1796. The deed was signed by Simon and Jemima, the only official record of her existence."
Mr. Shelford said that according to Mrs. Freeman's notes, soon after the hostilities with England started, Simon called his militia together,
gave up his command as captain, and said he was opposed to war and was going to be neutral. But Harry Hawkins Smith made the same
statement about his ancester, Phineas Rumsey, brother of Simon. Perhaps it was true of both. Mr. Shelford said that Simon "refused" to
sign the Revolutionary Pledge. "However, according to official records in Albany, he was employed to haul logs to obstruct the Hudson,
and with 19 others appealed for more pay due to high prices (corn 8 shillings per bushell). Statements that his land was seized by officials
appear in all family accounts."
Simon3 Rumsey was called the eldest son in his father's will of 1752, and for this reason received five pounds more than the rest of the
children.
Some of his children were shown by family records as born in Cornwall Precinct, some in Blooming Grove. But it was all Goshen Precinct
until 1764
when New Cornwall was taken off. Blooming Grove was not formed from New Cornwall until 1774, after all the children were born.
His family appears in the 1790 census of New Cornwall, with 5 males aged 16 or over, and 2 females. The boys may have been Isaac,
Nathaniel, Jeremiah and William. The second female may have been a servant, unless Ruth was still at home.
The 1796 deed from Simon Rumsey and his wife Jemima of New Cornwall was to Linus Rider. This property in Schonemuck Clove,
bordering on Hazards Pond (now Cromwell Lake) had been conveyed to him in April 1785 by his son John and wife Mary. (1796 was
after the town of Blooming Grove was formed, and just before the "New" was dropped from Cornwall. Linus Rider lived on "the Ridge"
west of Highland Mills, Monroe Tp. He was a pathmaster of Chesekooks in 1799. - R&C p.790-1)
By 1800, part of New Cornwall had become Chesecocks and part of Blooming Grove. Simon was in Chesecocks in 1800, his family listed
as 1 male and 2 females aged 45 or over, 1 male (26-44), 1 male and 2 females (16-25), and 1 male and 1 female under 10. From this it
would appear that perhaps one of his married children was at home, with spouse and two children.
Simon Rumsey was not indexed in the 1810 census, and was possibly living with Jonathan or Nathan Rumsey, both of whom had an extra
male over 45 in their households. His wife Phebe is reported to have died two years before.
The 1796 deed is the only mention in any records that Simon had a wife Jemima, and there is no mention of how her maiden name of
Knapp became known. It is known, however, that Jemima Knapp is NOT the daughter of Moses and Jemima (Mead) Knapp, as she is
known to have married David Waterbury at Stamford, CT on 12 Dec 1751 (and this Jemima Knapp is mentioned as Jemima Waterbury in
Moses Knapp's will in 1783).
A suggested possibility by Jean Rumsey to be checked is Nathaniel and Jemima (Ward) Knapp of Cornwall, NY.

THE RUMSEY FAMILY
pp. 70-71
James Rumsey, son of Simon (a native and lifelong resident of Orange county, N.Y.) was born April 4, 1759. He served a short time in the
Revolution, and helped build Fort Montgomery on the North River. About 1800 he removed to Aurora, N.Y., to live with his brother
Moses, and came thence, in 1806, to Enfield, where he bought 100 acres of land, comprising a part of the farm of his son George. Clearing
a small plat he erected a log house and moved his family into it in the winter of 1807, and died on the homestead, August 22, 1842. A
typical pioneer, he was prominent in town affairs, and being a carpenter by trade assisted in building the first Christian church edifice at
Enfield Center. His wife, Martha Horton, born November 26, 1765, died here June 11, 1827. Their children were, Jonathan, born
November 23, 1784, died December 10, 1827; Elizabeth (Mrs. Reuben Russell), born April 25, 1787, died January 30, 1864; John, born
June 27, 1789, died May 20, 1814; James, jr., born April 29, 1792, died February 11, 1869; Joshua, born July 18, 1794; died April 12,
1862; Solomon, born June 11, 1797, died December 26, 1860; Hannah (Mrs. S. J. Nobles), born March 17, 1800, died March 2, 1872;
Horton, born September 28, 1802, died May 23, 1824; and George, born July 31, 1808. George Rumsey, the sole survivor of this family
and the only one born in Enfield, is the oldest living native of the town. What is now Trumbull Corners, in the town of Newfield, was
originally and long known as Rumsy's Corners from the fact that David Rumsey and David Rumsey, second cousins, were repectively the
first blacksmith and merchant there.
Burr Rumsey, a son of James, jr., is a farmer near the original homestead. Mr. Rumsey has been supervisor of Enfield, his residence, and
also justice of the peace. For some years past he has spent a portion of his time at the West, leasing his farm to a tenant. Mr. Rumsey
enjoys, to a marked degree, the confidence and respect of his fellow citizens.
James Rumsey [1] served a short time in the Revolution, perhaps was the 1st Lieut.in John Morin Scott's provincial brigade recruited 16
Feb 1776. He was in theOrange County New York Militia, and helped build Fort Montgomery on the NorthRiver.
He was in New Cornwall, Orange Co, NY, in the 1790 census, the only adult malein the household. With him were 3 males under 16, and
2 females.
He was said to have moved to Aurora or Scipio, Cayuga Co, NY, about 1800 tolive for a time with his brother Moses, though was not with
him in the census. He had his own household in Scipio in 1800, consisting of 3 males and 1 femaleunder 10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 2
males 16-25, 1 female 26-44 and 1 maleover 45.
In the fall of 1805, James and his sons James (7.1.1.5) andJohn (7.1.1.4) went to Ulysses, SenecaCo, where he had purchased 100 acres
of land, later owned by his son George.(Tompkins County was formed 1817 from Cayuga and Seneca counties, and part ofUlysses became
Enfield, Tompkins Co.) They cleared a small plot and sowed somewheat. The following spring they built a small log cabin, and James
moved hisfamily into it in the winter of 1807. He was active in town affairs, Commissioner of Enfield Schools 1821– 1822, and as a
carpenter hehelped build the first church at Enfield Center.[2]
In the 1810 census, James Rumsey was listed in Ulysses, Seneca Co. He and hiswife were both over 45. With them were 2 boys under 10
(George, Horton), 1 boyand 1 girl 10-15 (Solomon, Hannah), 4 males and 1 female 16-24 (Joshua, James,John, Jonathan, Elizabeth).
He and James Jr were both listed in Ulysses, Tompkins Co, in 1820. James Sr andhis wife were over 45, and they had with them 1 male
10-15, and 1 male 16-18,the age subject to militia duty.
A deed in Tompkins Co land records, dated 31 May 1813 (before Tompkins Co wasformed), showed that James Rumsey of Seneca Co
purchased from Egbert Benson, executor of the will of John Lawrence of New York City, 100 acres in Ulysses (rec1832). He bought
another 74 acres in 1821 from Ann L. Hawkes by attorney (rec1826).
The 1825 census of Enfield, Tompkins Co, lists James Rumsey as having ahousehold of only 2 males and 1 female. James was too old to
be subject tomilitia duty, but he was entitled to vote. One male had died within the year(Horton), making the second male George.
In 1826 James Rumsey sold the 74 acre piece to his son James Jr. And on 20 Apr1826, James Rumsey of Enfield conveyed 25 acres in
Section 74 to his sonGeorge, subject to the life estate of James. His first wife Martha died the following year, December26, 1765 – June
11, 1827 aged 61 years buried in Rumsey Cemetery, Enfield NY.The date he married his second wife Martha is not yet known.
James Rumsey Senior was in his 60s in the 1830 census of Enfield, Tompkins Co.With him were 1 male (George) and 1 female (prob a
servant) in their 20s.
In the 1835 census of Enfield, under his name were listed 3 males and 2females. Only one of these males was subject to militia duty, but
all threewere eligible to vote. One of the females was unmarried and between the ages of16 and 45. This would be Martha Sutphen,

daughter of James' second wife Martha, who was to marry his son George. The third male was probably a farm laborer.James had 55 acres
of land under cultivation.
In 1840 James Rumsey was in his 70s. With him were 1 male 30-39 (GeorgeRumsey), 1 female 20-29 (Martha Sutphen) and 1 female
70-79. This last was alittle older than the Martha Sutphen in the 1830 census (see next p.) who was50-59.
Following the death of James, April 4,1759 - August 22, 1842 age of 83years buried in Rumsey Cemetery, Enfield NY[3],his heirs
disposed of their shares of his property between the years 1842 and1855, most selling their shares to George. On 26 Sep 1842, Martha
Rumsey of Enfield, relict of James Rumsey, gave aquit claim for her dower rights, to JonathanRumsey 1784-1872 Rumsey Cemetery,
Elizabeth Russell (husband not named),James Rumsey Jr, Joshua Rumsey, July 17,1794 - April 12, 1862 age of 63 years buried in
Rumsey Cemetery, Enfield, NY,Solomon Rumsey, Hannah Nobles wife of S. J. Nobles, and George Rumsey, all ofTompkins County.
The widow Martha ( )(Sutphen) Rumsey died in 1850, before the census, in CayugaCo where her probate gave the date of death as shown
above. The heirs werelisted as: Abraham Sutphen, Job Sutphen, Deborah Stoyell wife of Grover S.Stoyell, Jane Diamond wife of Henry
Diamond, all of Cayuga Co; Margaret Hewlettwife of Philip Hewlett, Catherine Strong wife of Rensselaer Strong of Ohio, andthe
petitioner William A. Sutphen, all children of the deceased, and the twochildren of Martha Rumsey deceased, daughter of the deceased, the
children (notnamed) living in Enfield, NY.
