Minutes, May 18, 2010
Present: Justin DiMatteo, InShik Lee, Cynthia Waterman, Stephanie McConnell, Kris Bennett, Linda
Schoffel, Dave Hall, Julie Newman
Justin called the meeting to order at 6:35. Minutes from February and April were approved
unanimously. Priority goals for 2010 were also approved unanimously. Focus for this coming year:
Publicize Program and Activities Supported by the Commission (Awareness) After discussion, members
agreed not to participate in Dairy Days parade this year (will aim to do so next year with involvement
from youth in CCE programs). This year, members will organize a display table at the Park (where
parade ends) to both publicize programs & boost membership. Justin agreed to take the lead on this.
DYC will also participate in Sept. 11 youth fair being organized by the Dryden Youth Opportunity Fund,
Maintain Full and Active Membersh!p (to get our membership up- try to get local youth 16 +, any
parents, any TC3 members, community members.)
^'Identify Available & Needed Youth Services, Programs and Resources — including discussion about youth
employment
Presentation & updates from CCE (handouts were shared)
6:35 David's youth groups went really well. Good turn outs all in all. Found coyote pups in Get Lost,
Rocketry plans rocket launch June 7, if bad weather, then June 14. Mentos & soda experiment was
amazing! New! Advanced Primitives coming up.. planning an outing with just subsistence package.
9"' annual Primitive Pursuits Day went well. S volunteers, and OURS and YOURS came. Estelle a previous
PP graduate has started a PP club /program at ESF at SU with a good following. Teen Challenge has a
large following and special group!
Julie's Programs- Teen challenge lunch programs did some field trips. David attended also. During April
break, some kids participated in Red Cross Babysitting class, was free to youth receiving free /reduced
lunch. Girls group going well; nutrition students visited from Cornell. The girls are very theatrical, Julie
wants to conned with other theatre groups, maybe some Dryden youth or graduates. OURS program
met its quota of duck sales for CCE Duck Race fundraiser. Received a first books grant from Cornell; also
a make- over /refresh grant from Triad ($200) for 4H Acres for paint, Youth got to go to Floating
classroom. Enjoying using new stove. Still using $1500.00 LEAP grant to do field events- made books
(shared sample field guide). Egg drop competition and competed at Commons. End of season OURS
celebration held May 8; stormy but good! Thanks to Kris for coming. YOURS program held election of
new officers; lots of seniors graduating this year. Lots of stuff happening on a small budget! Lots of
volunteers.
Linda Schoffel- April was Volunteer recognition month, at Coop. Ext. Youth Commission members are all
considered volunteers. Thanks to all DYC members for volunteering!
A youth who needs a sign language interpreter is participating in programming; no money in budget to
pay for the interpreter. Also need wheelchair access at 4H Acres. Linda submitted a grant to Rotary's
Accommodations Fund for help (not funded). Also submitted to DYOF, no word yet. Kris suggested
contacting FLIC for portable ramp; DYC members suggested this could be an Eagle Scout project too.
Also suggested contacting United Way Emergency Fund. RYS & OURS Budgets- Van usage high, budget
tight as usual, but on track through the first 4 months of the year. Shared copies of annual reports and
drew DYC members to the success stories.
Kris' boss Nancy wants to know how much is generated through other sources (including grants) so it's
great to know that the groups are generating and leveraging more funds. CCE is able to generate
reports on participation (and grants) from its database. Statistics pull from programs. Good work!
Planning for summer programs is underway; check websites (Town of Dryden & CCE) for new programs.
Fire academy will happen again & be S days.
Kris gave Linda, Dave & Julie 100 copies of a letter to parents of program participants; it's aim is to try to
recruit new DYC members.
Dryden Youth Development Task Force
Justin and David continue to serve on the committee. They are planning to bring in a representative
from the SEARCH Institute this summer /fall (40 developmental assets framework which have been
determined to be a child's necessary skills) Dryden Central Schools will engage the whole community in
this and Youth Commission will be invited and David and Julie, too.
Youth employment Town website has DYC youth employment guide. There will be fewer jobs this year
in our county but there will be adult -led crews of youth volunteers doing Summer of Service projects in
several places; this will be a r6sum6 builder. Discussion re. DYC & funding youth employment — should
we establish parameters? Needs, first time experience (younger kids), municipal jobs where we touch a
couple 18 -19 year olds, or jobs which might affect more kids. Some jobs, like camp counselors, mean
youth (campers) are served. Village of Dryden — Needs worker to be 18 or older for maintenance
worker. CCE youth employment plans for this summer: helpers for Dave & Julie. Library would like to
hire a couple kids. Have also a request from Floating Classroom to hire a particular youth (but
concerned that CCE insurance might not allow this due to liability) Kris said she can send Floating
Classroom a notice for next year's application cycle to fund a student employee; then it would be on
their insurance. DYC members agreed to not institute rules about this; each funding request will be
viewed on its own merits, based also on available funding. Kris reminded all that there are no longer
funds dedicated to youth employment; any funding used for this is out of the youth development
funding.
2009 DYC Annual Report Kris distributed copies, is also displayed on DYC website. Justin will present to
May 24 School Board mtg. Stephanie took copies for V. Freeville trustees; Kris will mail copies to JoEllen
for sharing with V. Dryden. Kris will send copies to county legislators Mike Lane & Martha Robertson, to
T. Dryden Rec, Director Melissa Bianconi and to all funded programs. InShik will share at upcoming
Town Board meeting, (planning for June 9, 7 pm during privilege of the floor time, will check with Mary
Ann Sumner.)
