October 20, 2008
Minutes
Present: Tom Fuchs, Mary Ann Sumner, Kris Bennett, Melissa Biaiiconi, Dave Hall, Linda
Schoffel
Since no quorum, chair or vice -chair was present, this was an informal sharing meeting only.
Minutes from Sept. — held for action in Nov.
CCE Reports & Updates — Dave reviewed his monthly program report. Primitive Pursuits is now
full with 24 participating, all have been successful in making a fire. A Dec. overnight is planned;
veterans will attend 2 nights, new participants 1 night. Program has a good mix of experienced kids
mentoring new ones. HOPE is planning a farewell party for Toni. New Games program is done,
linked with OURS for one day of programming. Outdoor Cooking prepared pizza, desserts, stew in
a pumpkin. Teen challenges has lots of new kids (roughly half). Bird Brains started today, going to
Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in early Nov. Dave recently attended a great presentation by Richard
Louv, author of "Last Child Out of the Woods" on how kids today have less time outside and less
unstructured time.
Linda — shared budget review. Program participation fees collected have been higher than was
budgeted by $800. Additional revenue — funds for printing of youth employment guide, milli.
grant for Dave's Roseland trip last surniner. There have been some savings due to Tom's job being
vacant. Van has been so helpful! Mary Ann asked about allocation (made for year, van arrived
only recently). Linda reported that finds allowed for the renting of a van earlier in the year until
leased vehicle arrived. Linda and Mary Ann will talk about the town funding to support the van.
Youth employment — 8 Dryden youth were employed, some as CCE helpers, library aides, other.
Slightly more funding was used than was in budget for this purpose. Next summer, Melissa
suggested holding one of the 3 skate park jobs for CCE youth employment. Due to low attendance,
Linda held off on her overview of how other communities offer youth employment. Hiring update
— committee of CCE staff and Kris Bennett screened 20 applications for the %z tune program
manager opening;.) interviews were done and 1 more scheduled for tomorrow (DYC's JoEllen also
participated in interviews). Expect to decide soon.
Recreation Master Plan Melissa shared parts of the draft plan and asked for feedback, especially for
goals she thought applied also to DYC. Kris suggested adding a definition for "recreation ",
additional demographics, clarify goals and who's responsible. Toni requested to see the entire
document, Melissa agreed to forward to him. Kris mentioned the DYC powerpoint that was drafted
a couple years ago, Mary Ann thought it would be something the town board would be interested in
seeing and also could be posted on the website. Need to clarify and formalize links to Rec. Dept
and programming.
Next meeting — Kris is having surgery, will not be working for 2 weeks and will not be able to
prepare and send agenda for Nov. 18 meeting. Tom agreed to do this.
Meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.
