Minutes
Present: Stephanie McConnell, Tom Quinn, Kris Bennett, Linda Schoffel, Dave Hall, Tom Archibald
Kris called the meeting to order at 6:35. Since no quorum was present the meeting was for information
sharing only.
Reports from CCE's Dryden Youth Services Program managers' reports and Sununer Skies brochure
were distributed. Recent feedback from youth program participants was shared; Linda clarified that when
youth said time was not sufficient it was because they wanted the program to be longer! Dave reported
that he hired a youth to help with the Stilt Walker program. His recent Primitives group includes some
really dedicated kids who are now being hired to help. One program not included in his report was a 12
week Primitives program for homeschoolers, 7 Dryden youth, ages 11 -13, participated. Dave's summer
programs will be starting late due to his vacation. Question — does transportation affect youth
participation in summer programs? Yes, but offering in varied Dryden locations increases access.
Summer programs don't tend to attract the most needy kids. Tom offered an overnight at the Syracuse
zoo recently that was very well received. He has facilitated employment for 3 girls at Southworth library,
DYC funds will pay their salaries for summer, employment could continue into the fall. Linda shared
updated budget. She reported that Heather Sanford recently did her Master's thesis on RYS, affirmed that
what they are doing is effective.
Presentations to V. Dryden trustees and Dryden School Board JoEllen presented the DYC annual report
®recently to both groups. V. Dryden asked about Alan's participation and JoEllen reported that he has not
been active.
Police & Communi!y Kris shared copies of teacher feedback from Dryden .Elementary School that
JoEllen had collected from the principal. Feedback showed that no presentations at all were done during
the past school year. Some feedback was provided on the previous year's presentations and this was not
positive. Since this was the same as feedback from Freeville Elementary School, DYC members asked
Kris to set up a meeting with Chief Margaret Ryan to discuss the program. Stephanie and Tom are
willing to attend with Kris; Kris will set up the meeting, invite the other DYC members as well. (Note:
,Yleeting is scheduled fi)r July 20, 11.-.15 AM at Dryden Police Dept.)
Misc. Youth employment Kris shared a copy of a form used by the Ithaca Youth Bureau to gather
feedback from youth employees about their experience. InShik drafted a blurb to accompany youth
paychecks so kids will know their jobs are funded by DYC.
Other 1) Kris reported that Jen Dube is resigning her position with'] Dryden Recreation to take a
position at U. Binghamton. 2) Kris distributed info about her department's Local Initiative Grants that
will allow local commissions to apply for up to $750 for a local project. DYC members present liked the
idea of applying for funds to develop either a detailed listing of Dryden youth programs an&or of Dryden
youth employment opportunities and sites. More discussion irf July. 3) Kris asked about changing July
meeting to another date, she'll be at a conference at the regular time. Meeting was rescheduled to
Tuesday, July 24, 6:30 PM at T. Dryden Hall. We will invite programs funded for sununer youth
employment to attend.
