HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-02-15i Dryden Youth Commission February 15, 2005 Minutes Present: Patty Mooney, Eric McConnell, Tracy Kurtz, Kristen Blackman, Kris Bennett, Nita Baldwin Absent: InShik Lee Excused: Alan Macomber Tracy called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Minutes from January were approved unanimously. Eric agreed to serve as liaison to the Brooktondale Day Camp; Patty agreed to be a liaison to the Youth Conservation Corps. Annual Reports Kris passed around the 2004 annual reports she had received from DYC funded programs. Programs have until Feb. 18 to submit. The CCE reports have better information about youth served than in past years because of the database program managers are using to enter names of program participants. Kris will use programs' annual reports to create a composite annual report for the DYC which can be distributed and shared, 2005 Goals Kris distributed copies of the 2002 goals and draft of the 2003 goals (which were never finalized). DYC has not adopted goals since 2002; Kris feels it's very important to have them so we'll know if we're on the right track and for describing the DYC to the community and government officials. All agreed. Maintaining a quorum is very important (not having a quorum for the first few meeting of 2003 is why goals were never adopted). Related to this is keeping all seats filled. One V. Dryden seat has been vacant for over a year. Tracy asked everyone to think of possible people for this seat, she will make a few phone calls and the DYC will be more proactive about this. Tracy asked that the monthly DYC agendas ® have a "membership update" item so we can keep tabs on this. Everyone agreed to look over the goals and bring suggestions back to the next meeting. Prelimina[y NYS Budget Info Kris reported that the Governor's proposed budget has some cuts that would affect programs in Dryden. She'll provide more info. as it becomes available. Steve Trumbull asked Kris to attend the next Town Board meeting on Mar. 10 to answer questions some board members have about how DYC funding is spent. After double checking, it appears the questions are about the CCE budget. Kris called Tracy and Linda S. from CCE; they will attend too. Camp Updates Freeville camp will be meeting at the Freeville United Methodist Church this summer since school space will be undergoing renovations and will not be available. They don't yet know whether the outdoor playground will be available, They are working to resolve a water issue with the Health Dept. Kathryn Cernera will not be returning as camp director, they'll start advertising the position at the end of the month if a potential candidate doesn't pan out. No one had info on the V. Dryden camp but that school will also not be available. Tracy will follow up with the Village. Dryden after school program, which traditionally has provided before- and after- camp care will NOT be doing so this summer. Additional school renovation details — Tracy heard that the renovations may not be done by Sept., no plans yet on where school would meet! Recreation Updates Tracy reported that the SUNY class is about ready to do the survey of Dryden residents; they have the voter registration lists and will be making phone calls between 7 -8 pm to either every 7th or 12th name (Tracy wasn't sure which). Questions include awareness about Town parks & nature ® trail, participation in Town events). The Club Dryden event was very successful, 248 kids attended. There was a dance, open gym (chaperoned by high schoolers and 2 SUNY class participants), open pool (with 2 lifeguards). The Booster Club made $400 selling refreshments. Plan for March meeting All agreed to a stmt time of 6:30 pm. It will be the "annual report" from ® Cooperative Extension. Kris asked whether the DYC still wants to invite Paul Streeter to this meeting; most said "yes" so Kris will set this up. As time allows after these guests, we will work on the goals. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm. DYC Page T'wo February 15, 2005
