Karen will send copies to members with the next mailing. The Town Board is holding a
public discussion next week of the budget. We have not received any questions or
feedback at this point.
Youth Program Report:
David Hall, Program Manager, distributed and discussed his program report. An
exciting program called Dryden Teen Day will be held on Saturday November 13 th
Workshops will be offered to those attending. After each youth completes a workshop,
they will receive a ticket, making them eligible to win a free car. Workshops are being
run in conjunction with Child Sexual Abuse Project of the Task Force for Battered
Women. Other human service agencies will be involved. David distributed program
flyers for other programs as well. Teacher conference days in Dryden are 'h days so
David will need to reschedule events planned for those days. Tracy suggested that
David explore early dismissal for at least one of the activities.
Karen presented the Youth Program budget through September 30 1n . Budget looks
pretty healthy. Staffing options for the remainder of '99 and possibly 2000 were
discussed.
1) Groton is holding interviews on October 28`n for a' /z time Program Manager. We
could look at folks who might be interested in Dryden's' /z time position as well.
Interviews could take place after Thanksgiving. Someone could be hired by January
2000.
2) We could offer 10 hours a week to a Program Manager to focus on the Youth for
Hire Project. There is a current Program Manager who is skilled and has time
available.
There is a possibility that the SACC program might be willing to run a couple of after
school activities for middle school youth or hire someone to set these activities up in
the community.
Both of these options would need to be reviewed at the December meeting. There is
money in the budget to do this.
Penny made the motion to have Dan and Karen bring resumes of appropriate
® candidates to the November meeting. Additionally, Chuck Leo, Program Manager,
should be hired as staff for hours not to exceed 10 hours /week to run the Youth for Hire
program and explore other program options with the SACC director. Motion seconded.
Passed by unanimous vote.
Discussion followed about room charge. David will follow up with Roy Simmons.
Closed buildings will make little difference to our programs.
Ken Finkelstein presented a revised proposal from the Varna Community Center. They
have changed from a Homework Club to a Science Activities Club run one day per
week. They held their first session on October 18th and had a good response, 9 kids
participated. They anticipate that enrollment will increase as people hear about the
program. Recruitment will be expanded to include Dryden programs, home schoolers,
and families from Cayuga Heights. They reduced their request from the Cayuga
Heights PTA and will do the same for their request from the Youth Commission.
Discussion included: enrollment figures, costs, volunteer support, and costs of building
use. This program will be viewed as a new program and will receive funds as start up
money. Volunteers should continue to search for additional funds. At the present time,
only volunteer staff are running this project. However, they are working with Cornell
Cooperative Extension 4 -H Programs as well as other Cornell programs specifically
Cornell Center for Material Research,
