Meeting Called to order at 7:00 PM. Penny made a motion that the meeting
start time be moved to 7:00 PM seconded and approved. Welcome Mary and
Walt to the meeting. An orientation will be set up with Karen soon.
Outings Report- Monica Bosworth from the Ithaca Youth Bureau has been our
Outings leader for several years. David Hall, our program manager, has been
assisting her this year. This past weekend the group had their year end camping
trip, which was wonderful. The group worked well together with planning,
setting up and during the activities. Dan Barton who has participated in Outings
for a couple of years has become a program intern and has been a real and
valuable asset to the program. As youth age out or mature out of the Outings
program (usually because they are now ready to join other activities) new youth
are invited to join. This year the group is a bit younger and has a total of 12
participating (5 boys and 7 girls ). This is a fairly balanced group in terms of
number of youth who would be identified as at risk and those who join because
of interst only. There is no summer program and the group will begin again in
September.
Youth Development Report - David could not attend but sent the flyer for the
summer program. The commission suggested that the activites be located for
two weeks at the Freeville fire hall and two weeks at Varna. Additional weeks
will be decided soon. Checks will be written directly to Co -op Extension so that
this money gets directed to the camp in a simple way. We will be interested in
tracking this at the end of the summer. A final flyer will go out to the community
soon.
Youth Development Up Date - Barbara announced that Joann Meyer Foland
has resigned her position as full time program manager effective as of May 14.
Barbara will be interviewing for a part time person to run the youth for Hire
program this summer and the Youth Commission will have to discuss how they
would like to proceed during the fall 1999 and the year 2000. This person will also
work with the Club Dryden project and will be working with teens who would be
paid to develop the program.
New business - The Commission needs to get requests for funding out soon. We
will discuss this in more detail at the June meeting.
