and talked about the youth oriented programs which Margaret Ryan is involved
in. The current program was started in 1995 and focused on youth in grades 14
Margaret presents several different topics during assemblies at the elementary
schools. ; Safety at Halloween, safety around the home, personal safety, bicycle
safety, and touches a little on drug awareness. These assemblies were stopped
in December 1998 due to scheduling problems at the schools. They are
planning a Jeopardy program with Police Officers and students. The school is
® interested in an 8 week DARE program but does not have the funding available.
There are no planned programs at the high school but that they do
presentations for classes when requested.
Susie Cook, talked about her dealings with the Dryden Police and what a good
job they are doing. Also, about 3 different categories of troubled youth. PINS -
person in need of supervision under the age of 16 and considered incorrigible
not committing crimes but skips school habitually or something along this line.
Juvenile Offender ages 7 -16 years of age who are committing serious
crimes(meaning murder, robbery, etc.
Juvenile Delinquent ages 7 -16 years who are committing crimes.
Kids on the juvenile offender status are difficult to process. Margaret is a skilled
juvenile office, she is educated and up to date on juvenile laws and works well
with youth.
There was discussion about the Law Enforcement Explorer Group. Doug was not
aware of a local project but expressed some interest in knowing more. Penny
and Tracy will follow up on this.
Nancy shared information about an upcoming campaign for Youth
Employment programs. the first step will be posters with information about youth
employment opportunities in the community and with JOB NET at the Ithaca
Youth Bureau. These should be available soon.
® Tracy Kurtz reported that the commission members met in February and again in
March. She was only able to attend the Feb. meeting and found that there war
a lot of Different programs to be offered to our youth and that the other
commission members have heard that we do some really cool things for our
kids. She mentioned Dave Gell from Trumansburg showing kids how to manage
sustainable forests and what you can build with the trees you fell(besides
firewood).
Meeting officially adjourned the meeting at 8:05 PM.
