Notes taken by Karen Coleman and Nita Baldwin Meeting called to order at 6:50 PM January 1998 minutes read and approved by general consensus. Corrections noted re: spelling of Loretta Corrillos' name. Youth Development - Introduction of David Hall - the new program manager. David has a variety of experiences working with youth. He is trained in outdoor activities, worked with Fall Creek after school program, and with IYB in the Conservation Corp. Currently David is working with the Outings program and has spent some time at the Varna Homework Club. He is meeting with Jo Ann, getting to know the kids, and generally in the "getting started " phase of his position. JoAnn reported that her activities were running smoothly. She brought a basket as an example of what the Craft group is doing and shared copies of INK LINKS which is produced by a group of youth (working with Jo Ann) and distributed through the school. O ur participation with the Varna Homework club will end the Second week of April. There have been some issues with recruitment of youth, participation is low, they have a good staff and reliable volunteers. The community center will have to evaluate this program and decide what they would like to do. Summer Program Discussion - After looking at several options the Commission agreed that 4 weeks of Summer programs would be held at the Freeville fire station, and if pre- registration indicates interest 2 weeks would be held at the Varna Community Center. The Commission does not want to loose the momentum that was is built up last summer. United Way - Steve Kirsch wrote and submitted an application to the United Way for funding to provide alcohol and drug free activities for middle school youth. This money would cover stipends, misc. costs of operating such a program. He attended a meeting with United Way. The application was for $2000. Potential Youth Center - Penny Stevens is closing her Child Care Center (across from Elementary School) this might be a great spot for a youth program / gathering place for Dryden. Steve will stay in contact with Penny. Laszlo stated that the school district has also been notified and may be interested. Karen suggested that the Commission might be interested in doing a needs assessment or facilitating a meeting of interested parties to discuss this. Budget- Steve was notified by Diane McFall that the Town of Dryden approved an exact match for Youth Programs for a total of $43,494.00 this is less than the amount we originally recommended. Steve and Karen will meet to write a letter to the Town, attend a meeting of the Board and ask for funding to be restored. The amount decreased is $15,258. This reflects the amount that would come from the Village of Freeville and Village of Dryden. Karen asked Nita to send a copy of the Youth Services budget section to clarify and to check the November Town Board minutes re: budget approvals and discussion. There will be a small increase in State Revenue: to the Town of Dryden = $6988 Village of Dryden = $1200 Village of Freeville = $ 300 Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM
