HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-03-27Dryden Recreation and Youth Commission March 2019 Meeting Minutes (DRAFT) 27 March 2019 at 7:00 PM Dryden Town Hall Members present: David Peck (Chair), Paula Klaben, Claudia Haferkamp-Wise, Diane Pamel, Joanne Holland Liaisons present: Kathy Servoss (Dryden Town Board), Janice Johnson (TCYSD), Shelley' Lester, (CCE Rural Youth Services), Dave Hall (CCE Dryden Youth Programs), Jeff Panik (CCE OURS), Juliana Quaresma (CCE Rural Youth Services) Community members present: Mackenzie Klaben (Participation in Government observation) The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM. Town Board report: K. Servoss The town received $232,000 in additional sales tax revenue they were not expecting and had not been included in the budget. A portion will be placed in the Recreation Reserve Fund. The Rail Trail received a $5000 grant from Tompkins County Planning that will be used for flashing lights at trail/road crossings. D. Pamel asked about the source of the grant the Rail Trail,received and noted that $5000 was the limit any one municipality could receive. K. Servoss recognized D. Pamel, M. Conger, and a group of teachers from Dryden Elementary. who participated in and received grants from the Achieving Youth Results Pitch Program. Dryden Recreation: D. Peck shared highlights from the February Recreation Department report. TCYSD report: J. Johnson Summer Camp Scholarship training session set for May 1. Holding a session called High -ding Places on April 25. - Training regarding bullying, How to Identify What's Happening With Kids And How To Help will be held on May 13. Coalition for Healthy Youth golf fundraiser on June 8. Kate Shanks -Booth is the new director of the Youth Services Department. D. Peck noted that work is continuing on the Rail Trail and that the kickoff celebration is scheduled for May 11. They are seeking volunteers. They are still working on the Route 13 crossing. D. Peck asked if any members were interested in serving as a liaison on the Rail Trail committee. Rural Youth Services S. Lester Part of Julianna's responsibilities will be working with the OURS program. RYS is currently working out of 55 Brown Road due to construction at the CCE building. RYS also participated in the Pitch Program and received a grants for three projects. Dryden Youth Services Program is involved in one project where students will read My Side of the Mountain, have regular programming around it, and then taking a trip to the Catskills. Dave Hall will be going with one group that will go in the fall. Duck Race fundraiser is April 28. Funds support 4H Acres S. Lester shared details from the 2018 budget results for Dryden Youth Services, OURS, and Youth Employment. Additional funds are put into reserve for the respective programs. D. Pamel asked if they will be doing youth employment again this summer. S. Lester confirmed that they will. D. Hall shared updates from the youth programs, including Explore Cornell, cooking programs, Primitive Pursuits, animal tracking, arts and crafts, and the ADK adventure during Spring Break. J. Panik shared updates from the Dryden OURS program and Project LEAD. Program numbers have been very good. Expecting to have around 50 kids for the spring. The best recruiters are kids who have been participating in the program. D. Peck shared that Patrick Bruner has had to back out of serving on the commission. January meeting minutes: D. Pamel moved to approve the minutes of the January meeting. P. Klaben seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously. K. Servoss shared that they are seeking volunteer for the Dryden Lake Festival. The festival will be held on July 27 from 12-5 PM. Parks in Dryden D. Peck shared that DPW has done some improvement work at the park in Etna. The park is owned by the Etna Community Association. It was used by Dryden Rec in the fall for soccer. K. Servoss said that the town does not currently own any park land. She mentioned a 1.33 acre parcel of land the town owns along the Rail Trail in Varna which could be ideal for a small park. Members of the commission discussed the potential for this parcel as well as desire for future park and recreation space development. The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 PM.
