August 9, 2004 Meeting Minutes
Recreation Dept. Conference Room
Present: Matty Hamel, Bill Finnerty, Tracy Kurtz, Molly Riley, Lisa Stelick,
Steve Stelick (Town Board rep.), Jennifer Glaab (Town Recreation
Coordinator)
Excused: Ron Space II, Jim Wood, Tracy Kurtz, Molly Riley, Ralph Boettger
Guests: Jolene Lyons, Bob Slocum, Sheila Hall
1. Began at 6:09 PM. Meeting not official due to a lack of a quorum. July
2004 minutes not approved.
2. Bob Slocum thanked the Recreation Dept. for helping to facilitate the Adult
Softball League. Eleven teams participated. Overall the season went well
with the exception of the playing conditions at the high school. DRC
members agreed that school field space in general is poorly maintained
and expressed interest in securing their own Town field space to use in
the future.
3. DRC membership drive discussed. DRC members contacted the
following individual to see if they were interested in serve on the DRC:

4. Recreation Coordinators Vacancy Discussed, Jennifer Glaab has given a
two -week notice. She will be moving to Tennessee at the end of August.
Jenn identified three things that need to be done by her office still:
A. Fall budget (she has done as much of it as possible)
B. Ice - skating liner needs to be ordered
C. Suggestion for next summer- consider offering an All -Sports
Summer Camp
Filling the vacancy:
A. Jenn recommends that Eric be retained as long as the possible to
keep up with the day -to -day operations, e.g. activity registration,
hanging of posters, etc.
B. Jenn recommends Town hire Interim Coordinator. Jolene Lyon
(present at meeting) has expressed interest. Jenn thinks Jolene
would be excellent because of her computer and business
background.
C. Steve stated; 1) Interim position is necessary, and 2) An Interim
person will be handpicked by the Town Board.
D. Regarding search process; Steve asked Bob Slocum and anyone
from the DRC if they would like to serve on the search committee.
E. Position currently being advertised. Deadline for applications is
August 201".
5, Recreation Office Space- Jenn thinks building may have been sold. Office
space for Recreation Coordinator may be an issue in the future.
6. Recreation Coordinator's Report (see attached)
Additions to report:
A) Flag football needs coordinator
B) Field hockey is for grades 2 -6
C) Music in the Park has had very rainy season. Concert series not
likely to brake even. Concessions down due to rain. Steve
recommends that future performer's refrain from making political
statements while performing. Add this wording to their contract.
D) Fishing Derby will be co- sponsored by a fishing club out of Whitney
Point next year.
E) The Fall Festival in October is cancelled due to Jenn's departure.
F) The Battle of the Bands scheduled for September 181' will go on as
planned and be overseen by Eric.
7, Wall Street Ball Field Update - Bill attempted to skin field but was rained
out. Expressed desire to somehow complete this work by fall so field is
ready for spring play. Jenn said that she would include project in next
year's budget.

1. Upcoming Events/Programs:
a. FootbalUCheerleading
• Flag Football — grades K -3, $15; Junior Tackle — grades 3 -5, $30; Senior Tackle — grades 6 -7
$30; Cheerleading — grades K -8, $30.
• Season begins August 23, 2004 (mid Sept for Flag) and nuns through the end of October
• Equipment Handout is planned for Friday, August 20'h, 6 -7pm at the Town Barn
• Youth Football League Scrimmage will be held at Dryden HS on Sunday, September 12`h

• FREE — open to girls and boys ages 8 -15
2. Updates:
a. "Music in the Park" Summer Concert Series
• Steve Southworth & the Rockabilly Rays — July 14'h — CANCELLED DUE TO RA.TN
• The Seven Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines International — July 21 ", approx 150 in attendance,
• raised $84.35 in concessions & $15.50 in donations.
• Swamp Cats — July 28 "' — Heavy rain until concert start — approx. 30 in attendance, raised $43.45
in concessions.
• Rubin Everidge and the SanAnTones — August 4`h, slow steady rain during entire concert —
approx 60 in attendance (sat under trees and in cars around the perimeter of the park), raised
$65.00 in concessions.
• The Purple Valley — August 1 I''' — Note: Forecast calls for rain

b. Wal *Mart All-American Kid's Fishing Derby
• Saturday, July 17, 2004 — Dryden Lake; 9am- 12:00pm — FREE — open to ages under 15
• Co- sponsored by Canaan Flies & More (772 Harford Road, Brooktondale) with numerous other
business sponsors
• 46 participants in attendance, 48 fish caught.
• Contest winners:
I . First fish of the day - Rhetta Bcardslee, age 10, of Freeville.
2. First place in total weight of all fishes caught - 5 -9 age group - Christopher Elliot, age. 6,
of Lafayette; 10 -15 group - Kelsie Dunckley, age 10, of Dryden.
3. The largest single fish competition - tie between Kelsie Dunckley and Kyle Morse, 13, of
Ithaca.
4_ The most fish caught, Colin Wood, age 6, of Dryden - 5 fish; Kelsie Dunckley, age 10, of
Dryden - 12 fish.
5, Youngest fisherman awards - Garen Barker of Brooktondale and Makalla Lindsay of
Newark Valley, both 2 years of age.
6. The Hard Luck awards - Carlee Coish of Richford, Tommy Lindsay III of Newark
• Valley, Austin Sherman of Cortland and Gabriel Kearney of Cortland, all in the under 4
age group.
7. Winners of our casting contest in each age group - Gabriel Kearney, age 4, Lyncoln
Barber, age 8, and Nathan Moran, age] 5, all from Cortland.
