October 30, 2000 -- Meeting Minutes
Present: The meeting was held at Viking Lanes. Mike Almendinger, Stewart Gray, Bob
Slocum, Alice Green, Bill Finnerty, Steve Stellick and Cande Carroll.
Mike Almendinger called the meeting to order. The minutes from the meeting of October
16 were distributed and discussed. They were accepted as amended
Bob asked to add an item to this meeting's agenda: The New Ballfield.
OLD BUSINESS
County Youth Bureau Interns. Bob asked regarding the County Youth Bureau
intems and whether they were coming. Alice indicated she had their report and would
present it.
Update on School Facilities Fees. Mike indicated that it should be the same as last
year: $10 per hour per group. Steve Stelllick stated that per Streeter, there would
continue to be no charge for outdoor activities.
® Stewart asked if there were port-a- potties at the elementary school and Steve said
there are. He also asked if George Junior Republic has facilities available to the
public — various people answered yes and these were discussed.
Mike asked about the Cornell Outing Club. Cande said she would get some

New Ball Field. Bob brought up the question of the New Ball Field. And the subject
was discussed: Possible site, how it might be situated. It was suggested that Steve be
part of the group that works on this project. Bob said that the Village is looking for input.
Steve suggested the possibility of using the Ithaca College Connection to help with
laying out the field.
Black Star. Stewart asked about the possibly uses for the area behind the old Black
Star building on Rt. 13. What is the projected use? The property, owned by Jim Holman,
owner of Ringwood Ra ceway has come up in Sertoma meetings. Could be excellent for
future fields and all types of recreation.
• Stewart asked if the Dryden Recreation Commission could-make recommendations to
the Town: "This is what we have, this is what we don't have..."
Photographs of Facilities. Mike suggested taking pictures of facilities and areas for
the record.
Ice Skating Rink. It was suggested that the basketball area of Montgomery Park, since
it is banked and fenced, be used during the winter months for ice skating. Bob
suggested asking Jonathon Bradley or Todd Breuer. Steve volunteered to bring it up
with Todd Breuer. Alice mentioned the rink that Homer has.. She suggested the
possibility of service groups working concessions at such a rink.
Underutilized Facilities. It was discussed that many areas and facilities are
underutilized, such as the Bandstand. Steve suggested that this could be a focus of the
Recreation Commission.
Youth Commission Invitation. Mike asked about inviting the Youth Commission to
meet with the Recreation Commission. Bob suggested inviting them to attend our
November 27 meeting.
Other Group Invitations. There was further discussion about inviting other community
groups to present their community recreation programs ads well. It was suggested that
everyone on the recreation commission come prepared to our next meeting to give a
five- minute presentation on groups each is involved with.
Dam Area. Steve said that it IS under consideration for public use. Alice reiterated the
importance of exploring different uses. It was suggested that Tom Hatfield look into it.
Steve thought it was possible that the Town had bought the area, but wasn't certain.
Mike said he would call Tom to ask him about the area.
Facilities Report. Alice distributed copies of the Facilities surrey delivered to her by the
Facilities Interns and the information was discussed and added to. Mike formally
thanked the Facilities interns who have put such good work into the Facilities Report.
School Field Construction. Alice asked about construction progress on the High
School Football, Track and Soccer Complex. Steve said that there is s huge amount of
construction currently in the pipeline that just has to make its way to the front of the
queue. He doubted that it had been approved yet —and then it has to go out for bid. But
they were supposed to break ground last July.
