August 7, 2000 -- Meeting Minutes
Present: Mike Almendinger, Tom Hatfield, Bill Finnerty, Stewart Gray, Steve Stellick,
Cande Carroll
Mike Almendinger called the meeting to order. Stewart moved to accept the minutes
from the meeting of July 27. There was discussion of taking of minutes and how they
could be improved.
OLD BUSINESS
Survey Forms Regarding online survey forms that have been received to date, Mike
asked Cande to forward latest submissions to him.
Master List Mike distributed copies of the data for the Master List, which was reviewed
by those present. There was discussion of the various categories: Youth, Adult,
Adult/Youth I Activity, Sports, Summer Program.
Mike gave a report on the youth data collection evenings: Thursday, July 27 and
Tuesday, August 1. Tom Mentioned that official thanks are given to the youth who
participated: Ashley Hatfield, Emily Kurtz, Nathan Cushman, Greg Scoffitti, who made
the phone calls and collected the information. Since many organizers were unavailable
during the evening hours of our data collection, Ashley and Emily would call them
during the day.
Many groups are still missing, such as The Girl Scouts (and scout troops from Dryden,
Ithaca, Freeville), Serteen, Kiwanis, Greek Peak. And that there would also probably be
a list coming from the school (Joanne).
How Inclusive? The question was raised again, as at other meetings, as to the extent
of inclusion the Recreation Commission would be, as far as facilities versus programs:
1)TOWN: Viking Lanes, Klein's Archery, Dryden Lakes Golf (all are "facilities" ,
though they all offer organized "recreational programs ")
2) Does a large number of community (Dryden) members use the program?

Format of the Directory om brought up the question of format: Mike suggested the
format would likely be alphabetical with a secondary sorting by category. Mike also
suggested that this would be expanded. Looking again the Master List, the address is
there for our use only in contacting the group for subsequent information updates while
the phone number and contact info are for publication.
Tom said that he would like to take the Master List "Draft" to the Town Board Meeting.
Deb Granthan could pass it out to generate some enthusiasm. He also mentioned that
we need input and sports and recreation activities from the Ithaca School System of
their team and club activities: the sports contact (Bill Bryant, AD) and the club contact.
Mike offered to contact Bill Bryant.
Deadline for Publication Discussion turned to the Deadline for publication of the
Recreation Commission Directory. It was determined that it would not be out by
September 1, but as soon after that as possible.
• Facilities Committee There was nothing to report on putting together the people for
the Facilities Committee. Steve offered to follow up with a call to Ralph Shortell.
Mike spoke with Bambi about the Municipal Recreation Group and said he would ask
her to attend one of the Dryden Recreation Commission meetings in the fall.
Ithaca College Intern Tom mentioned that Nancy Zahler of the Tompkins County
Department of Youth Services contacted him about an Ithaca College intern who wants
to come to one of our meetings to talk about the Recreation Partnership. There was
discussion regarding the benefit of having an intern to assist the Dryden Recreation
Commission. This should be noted to Steve Woodard as he could be well served to
meet them.
Clerical Support Mike mentioned that Bambi advised him that clerical support for the
Dryden Recreation Commission would be "hit or miss" at this point due to heavy
workload in the offices.
NEW BUSINESS
There was discussion regarding distribution of the Recreation Commission Directory.
Mike mentioned that his son had offered to work on designing a logo for the Dryden
Recreation Commission
The next meeting was announced as scheduled for Monday August 21., and this
meeting was adjourned.
