HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-CPB 2019-12-18CITY OF ITHACA COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MINUTES Regular Meeting 3:30 p.m. December 18, 2019 Present: Chair: Kane Commissioners (5) Beem-Miller, Rogers, Wright, Simons Youth Commissioner: Logue Others Present: IPD Acting Chief – Nayor Public Information Specialist - Faraday Excused: Onyejuruwa Absent: Korthuis Call to Order: 3:35p.m. Approval of the October 23, 2019 Community Police Board Meeting Minutes- Resolution: By Commissioner Rogers: Seconded by Commissioner Beem-Miller RESOLVED, That the minutes of the October 23, 2019 Community Police Board meeting be approved as published. Carried Unanimously Report from Common Council: Chair Kane phoned Council Person Kerslick, who was unable to make it to the meeting. He reported over the phone that there is a new Community Police Board applicant being processed. Report from the Police Department: Nayor- Shared compliments received by the Police Department. One from TCAT, and one recognizing Officer Lopez for his efforts to assist a person who had a medical emergency and had his car veer onto the Officer’s lawn. Compliments were also noted from the bystanders to the Climate Action protests on Green Street. Chief Nayor shared that IPD is working on their Annual Goals. Patrol vehicles will now feature the Ithaca Police’s website address, as well as the phase “Making a Difference Together”. IPD recently had their first department wide meeting, will be taking place quarterly moving forward. Staffing is hurting, there is a lateral candidate coming in from Oswego. Recruitment efforts continue. Cops, Kids, and Toys program went well, along with the Officers Santa repel from the roof of City Center. Officers also performed bell ringing with the Salvation Army. The victims waiting area is almost completed, awaiting furniture. Chair Kane asked questions about the vehicle requested in the IPD’s requests beyond the Mayor’s budget, which was approved, along with cameras. Questions were fielded about the contract and the feelings surrounding the Mayor implicating the responsibility of the IPD and the DA’s Office in the April Common’s incident. Kane will share the list of demands/ requests that the Mayor mentions in the July Common Council meeting. Discussions ensued about the recent murder in Newfield, the Officer injured during an arrest. The board and IPD discussed public opinion of Police in general, ways this effect recruitment and work climate. Old Business- Report on Possible Connections with Youth Organizations: Youth Commissioner Logue repost that Social Justice week planning is underway. They are starting to come up with presentation ideas and would like to have IPD there. Social Justice Week is March 23rd- 27th, either Monday -Friday or Tuesday - Friday, features 35 minute presentations. This year’s theme is “Community” and ideas discussed include- Women in Policing; National stereotypes of police. Youth Commissioner Logue will send a general email to Chief Nayor. Commissioners and Chief Nayor discussed the low influx of Community Police Board Investigations. New Business items for next meeting: Commissioner Rogers will draft an annual report Chair nomination will be held next meeting, January 22, 2020.
