FIRE PROTECTION GENERAL NOTES
1.0 IT IS THE INTENT OF THESE DRAWINGS TO PROVIDE MODIFICATIONS TO THE WET
FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS FOR THE PROTECTION OF OLIN HALL LABS
103, 105, AND 107.
2.0 PRIOR TO ALTERATIONS, THE SPRINKLER CONTRACTOR SHALL FIELD VERIFY
EXTENT OF ALTERATION AND NEW WORK, WITH REGARD TO EXISTING CONDITIONS
AT PIPE PENETRATIONS THROUGH FLOORS, WALLS, CEILINGS AND SOFFITS.
3.0 ALL SPRINKLER COMPONENTS SHALL BE UNDERWRITER'S LABORATORIES (UL) AND
FACTORY MUTUAL (FM) APPROVED.
4.0 THE DRAWINGS ARE DIAGRAMMATIC AND INDICATE ONLY THE GENERAL
ARRANGEMENT OF THE ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE FIRE PROTECTION WORK. AS
SUCH, CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE A COMPLETE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN STRICT
ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FM GLOBAL STANDARDS, THE NFPA
13-INSTALLATION OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS, THE NEW YORK STATE BUILDING
CODES, THE NEW YORK STATE FIRE CODES, LOCAL CODES, AND GOVERNING
AUTHORITIES. THE DESIGN OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS TO WITHSTAND SEISMIC
EVENTS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CRITERIA DEVELOPED BY THE NFPA.
5.0 CONTRACTOR SHALL REQUEST SPRINKLER SYSTEM SHUTDOWNS THROUGH
CORNELL CUSTOMER SERVICE (607.255.5322) A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) DAYS PRIOR
TO THE SHUTDOWN DATE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BEAR THE COST OF THE
UTILITY SHUTDOWN. NOTIFY THE OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE TO COORDINATE
BUILDING FUNCTIONS WITH THE BUILDING COORDINATOR.
6.0 COORDINATE THE EXACT LOCATION OF SPRINKLERS, EQUIPMENT, AND DEVICES
WITH ARCHITECTURAL, MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND ALL OTHER TRADES
DRAWINGS PRIOR TO ROUGH-IN AND INSTALLATION.
7.0 AFTER ALL WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED, ACCEPTANCE TESTING SHALL BE
SCHEDULED THROUGH EH&S, AND SHALL BE WITNESSED BY EH&S AND CITY OF
ITHACA REPRESENTATIVES.
8.0 HYDROSTATIC TEST SHALL BE PERFORMED AT SYSTEM PRESSURE, FOR A PERIOD
OF 2-HOURS. A REPRESENTATIVE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SHALL
WITNESS HYDROSTATIC TESTING OF THE NEW PIPING INSTALLATIONS AND
ALTERATIONS. THE AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION (ITHACA FIRE DEPARTMENT)
REQUIRES THAT ONE OF THEIR REPRESENTATIVES WITNESSES HYDROSTATIC
TESTING AND FLUSHING. ADVANCE NOTICE AND SCHEDULING IS REQUIRED
THROUGH EH&S.
9.0 ANY FIRESTOPPING DISTURBED DURING THE COURSE OF WORK SHALL BE
REPAIRED TO MAINTAIN A 2-HOUR FIRE RATING.
10.0 SPRINKLER PROTECTION CANNOT BE REMOVED FOR MORE THAN ONE WORK SHIFT
UNLESS TEMPORARY HEAT DETECTION IS INSTALLED, TIED TO THE FIRE ALARM,
AND TESTED WITH ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY.

PLUMBING GENERAL NOTES
1.0 DRAWINGS ARE DIAGRAMMATIC AND INDICATE THE GENERAL ARRANGEMENT
OF SYSTEMS AND WORK INCLUDED IN THE CONTRACT. CONTRACTOR SHALL
FIELD VERIFY ALL DIMENSIONS. IF DIMENSIONS OR CONDITIONS ARE FOUND

2.0 UTILITY SHUTDOWNS: SHUTDOWN OF ANY BUILDING UTILITY SYSTEM SHALL
BE COORDINATED WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE AT PH: 607-255-5322. THE
CONTRACTOR SHALL BEAR THE COST OF THE UTILITY SHUTDOWN.
SCHEDULE WORK TEN DAYS IN ADVANCE AND NOTIFY THE OWNER'S
REPRESENTATIVE TO COORDINATE BUILDING FUNCTIONS WITH THE
BUILDING COORDINATOR.
3.0 WORK IS REQUIRED IN VARIOUS PORTIONS OF THE FACILITY TO EXECUTE
WORK OF OTHER TRADES (EG ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL). ALTHOUGH NOT
NECESSARILY SHOWN ON DRAWINGS, WORK IS REQUIRED IN THESE AREAS

FLOORS, ROOFS AND WALLS ARE TO BE FIRE AND SMOKE STOPPED. CAPS
AND JOINTS INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO) TOP OF WALL TO FLOOR OR
ROOF DECK, WALL TO BEAMS, AND CONTROL OR EXPANSION JOINTS.
FIRESTOPPING INCLUDES BOTH FORM OR PACKING MATERIAL AND THE FILL,
VOID OR CAVITY MATERIAL.
5.0 INSTALL EQUIPMENT TO ENSURE PROPER ACCESS TO CONTROL DEVICES
AND WITH SUFFICIENT SPACE TO PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND
REPAIR. EQUIPMENT THAT IS NOT INSTALLED WITH THIS REQUIREMENT IN
MIND SHALL BE RELOCATED AT NO EXPENSE TO THE UNIVERSITY UNTIL
DEFICIENCIES ARE CORRECTED.
6.0 ALL SYSTEM TESTING SHALL BE CONDUCTED PRIOR TO INSULATION,
FIREPROOFING, AND ENCLOSURE IN SHAFTS. ANY RESTORATION WORK
REQUIRED AS A RESULT OF DISTURBING FINISHES OR STRUCTURE IN ORDER
TO ACCESS SYSTEMS REQUIRING REPAIR SHALL BE AT NO COST TO THE
UNIVERSITY.
7.0 VERIFY FINAL EQUIPMENT/FIXTURE LOCATIONS FOR ROUGHING-IN.
8.0 ANY FIRESTOPPING DISTURBED DURING THE COURSE OF WORK SHALL BE
REPAIRED TO MAINTAIN A 2-HOUR FIRE RATING.
9.0 THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING ALL LABOR, MATERIALS, AND

MECHANICAL GENERAL NOTES
1.0 ALL DUCT DIMENSIONS INDICATED ARE IN INCHES, AND ARE INSIDE FREE AND
CLEAR DIMENSIONS.
2.0 PNEUMATIC TERMINATIONS:
IF COPPER: DEMO BACK TO MAIN AND PROVIDED SOLDERED END CAP
IF POLY: DEMO BACK TO MAIN AND PROVIDE BRASS PLUG
DO NOT USE SHEETMETAL SCREW OR BEND OVER END OF COPPER TUBE.
3.0 INSTALL EQUIPMENT TO ENSURE PROPER ACCESS TO CONTROL DEVICES AND
WITH SUFFICIENT SPACE TO PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR.
EQUIPMENT THAT IS NOT INSTALLED WITH THIS REQUIREMENT IN MIND SHALL BE
RELOCATED AT NO EXPENSE TO THE UNIVERSITY UNTIL DEFICIENCIES ARE
CORRECTED.
4.0 ALL SYSTEM TESTING SHALL BE CONDUCTED PRIOR TO INSULATION,
FIREPROOFING, AND ENCLOSURE IN SHAFTS. ANY RESTORATION WORK REQUIRED
AS A RESULT OF DISTURBING FINISHES OR STRUCTURE IN ORDER TO ACCESS
SYSTEMS REQUIRING REPAIR SHALL BE AT NO COST TO THE UNIVERSITY.
5.0 CUTTING AND PATCHING: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL
CUTTING, FITTING, AND PATCHING TO COMPLETE THE WORK. WHERE EXISTING
CONSTRUCTION IS REMOVED, CAUSING AN EXPOSURE OF UNFINISHED AND/OR
DAMAGED SURFACES, RESULTING SURFACES SHALL BE RECONSTRUCTED WITH
MATERIALS TO MATCH FINISHED AREAS.
6.0 ANY FIRESTOPPING DISTURBED DURING THE COURSE OF WORK SHALL BE
REPAIRED TO MAINTAIN A 2-HOUR FIRE RATING.
7.0 TESTING AND BALANCING: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BALANCE ALL AIR SYSTEMS
AS INDICATED. SUBMIT RESULTS OF TESTING AND BALANCING ON STANDARD TAB
CONTRACTOR'S FORMS TO THE ENGINEER FOR REVIEW. SYSTEMS SHALL BE
BALANCED TO WITHIN +/- 10% OF DESIGN VALUES. FINAL BALANCING SHALL OCCUR
AFTER ALL LEAKS IN THE BUILDING ENVELOPE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND
SEALED.
8.0 SEAL ALL PIPE, GRILLE, DIFFUSER, DUCT, CONDUIT PENETRATIONS WITH
APPROPRIATE MATERIALS (CAULK, FOAM, ETC,) THAT ARE IMPENETRABLE TO THE
CONTAINED ORGANISMS AND WITHSTAND REPEATED DECONTAMINATIONS WITH
CLEANING AGENTS.

THIS LABORATORY IS CURRENTLY SERVED BY AN EXISTING AUTOMATED LOGIC
CONTROL SYSTEM. EXISTING POINTS ARE TO BE RE-UTILIZED FOR THE NEW SEQUENCE
OF OPERATION WHERE FEASIBLE.
THE BASIS OF DESIGN MAXIMUM AIRFLOWS ARE DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN A 100 FPM FACE
VELOCITY AT THE FUME HOOD. HOWEVER, IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO OPERATE THE FUME
HOODS WITH A FACE VELOCITY OF 80 FPM. THIS WILL BE DETERMINED AT THE TIME OF
FUME HOOD CERTIFICATION. THE BAGS CONTRACTOR WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BEING
ON-SITE DURING FUME HOOD CERTIFICATION, AND RE-PROGRAM AS NEEDED TO RESET
THE AIRFLOW SETPOINTS BASED ON THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS.

DOWNSTREAM STATIC PRESSURE SETPOINT: DETERMINE DURING TESTING AND
BALANCING EFFORTS.
LABORATORY AIRFLOW CONTROL
AIR VALVE POSITIONS SHALL BE BASED ON MODE. UNDER NORMAL CONTROL, ROOM
OCCUPANCY SHALL BE DETERMINED VIA ROOM OCCUPANCY SENSORS.
WHEN THE ROOM IS OCCUPIED, THE BACS SHALL SEND AN OCCUPIED COMMAND TO THE
FUME HOOD MONITORS. THE FUME HOOD EXHAUST AIR VALVES SHALL MODULATE
BETWEEN THE MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM POSITIONS AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE FACE
VELOCITY SETPOINT BASED ON THE SASH POSITION. THE SUPPLY AIR VALVE SHALL
MODULATE AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE SPACE AT 100 CFM NEGATIVE.
WHEN THE ROOM IS UNOCCUPIED, AND THE SASHES ARE AT OR BELOW 18-INCHES, THE
BACS SHALL SEND AN UNOCCUPIED COMMAND TO THE FUME HOOD MONITORS. THE
FUME HOOD EXHAUST AIR VALVES SHALL MODULATE BETWEEN MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM
UNOCCUPIED POSITIONS AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN A 65 FPM FACE VELOCITY SETPOINT
BASED ON THE SASH POSITION. THE SUPPLY AIR VALVE SHALL MODULATE AS NEEDED
TO MAINTAIN THE SPACE AT 100 CFM NEGATIVE.
WHEN THE ROOM IS UNOCCUPIED AND ANY OF THE FUME HOOD SASHES ARE ABOVE 18-
INCHES, THE BACS SHALL NOT SEND THE SPACE UNOCCUPIED COMMAND TO THOSE
PARTICULAR FUME HOOD EXHAUST AIR VALVES. THE FUME HOOD EXHAUST AIR VALVES
WHOSE SASHES ARE ABOVE 18-INCHES SHALL MAINTAIN THE OCCUPIED SASH OPEN
AIRFLOW SETPOINT. THE BACS WILL SEND THE UNOCCUPIED COMMAND TO THOSE FUME
HOODS WHOSE SASHES ARE AT OR BELOW 18-INCHES AND THE FUME HOOD EXHAUST
AIR VALVES WHOSE SASHES ARE AT 18-INCHES OR BELOW SHALL MODULATE TO
MAINTAIN A 65 FPM FACE VELOCITY SETPOINT. THE SUPPLY AIR VALVE SHALL MODULATE
AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE SPACE AT 100 CM NEGATIVE.
ZONE TEMPERATURE CONTROL
TEMPERATURE SETPOINTS SHALL BE DETERMINED BASED ON A COMBINATION OF
PROGRAMMED SCHEDULE AND SPACE OCCUPANCY SENSORS.
OCCUPIED HEATING: IF THE SPACE IS OCCUPIED DURING THE SCHEDULED OCCUPIED
PERIOD AND THE SPACE TEMPERATURE FALLS BELOW THE OCCUPIED HEATING
TEMPERATURE SETPOINT, THE BASEBOARD RADIATION CONTROL VALVE SHALL
MODULATE TO MAINTAIN THE SPACE TEMPERATURE SETPOINT. IF THE SPACE
TEMPERATURE IS NOT AT SETPOINT WITH THE BASE BOARD RADIATION CONTROL VALVE
FULLY OPEN, THE REHEAT CONTROL VALVE SHALL MODULATE TO MAINTAIN THE SPACE
TEMPERATURE SETPOINT. WHEN THE SPACE TEMPERATURE IS AT SETPOINT, THE

EXHAUST FAN AND BYPASS VALVE CONTROL
THE EXHAUST FAN SHALL BE ENABLED AT ALL TIMES AND RUN AT CONSTANT SPEED.
IF THE EXHAUST DUCT STATIC PRESSURE FALLS MORE NEGATIVE THAN SETPOINT, THE
BYPASS AIR VALVE WILL OPEN AND MODULATE TO MAINTAIN SETPOINT. IF THE EXHAUST
DUCT STATIC PRESSURE RISES MORE POSITIVE THAN SETPOINT, THE BYPASS AIR VALVE
SHALL MODULATE CLOSED AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN SETPOINT.
HEATING LOAD SHED
UPON A STEAM LOAD SHED 1,2,3, OR 4 INPUT, THE ZONE SHALL INDEX TO UNOCCUPIED
MODE, BUT SHALL BE RESETTABLE TO OCCUPIED MODE UPON OCCUPANCY.
UPON A STEAM LOAD SHED 5 OR 6 INPUT, THE ZONE SHALL INDEX TO UNOCCUPIED
MODE AIR CHANGE RATES, AND THE SPACE TEMPERATURE SETPOINT SHALL BE 60°F.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA: INTERIOR SUPPLY, RETURN AND GENERAL EXHAUST: 5% SYSTEM LEAKAGE TESTED AT 1.25 TIMES THE EXPECTED OPERATING STATIC PRESSURE.
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA: INTERIOR LABORATORY EXHAUST SYSTEMS: 2% SYSTEM LEAKAGE TESTED AT 1.25 TIMES THE EXPECTED OPERATING STATIC PRESSURE.
