HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-CPB 2019-07-24CITY OF ITHACA COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MINUTES Regular Meeting 3:30 p.m. July 24, 2019 Present: Chair: Kane Commissioners: (4) Rogers, Wright, Beem-Miller, Onyejuruwa OTHERS PRESENT: Acting Chief Nayor Public Information Specialist Faraday EXCUSED: Common Council Liaison Kerslick Youth Commissioner Logue CALL TO ORDER: 3:38 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Moved by Commissioner Rogers: Seconded by Commissioner Wright RESOLVED, That the minutes of the June 26, 2019 Community Police Board meeting be approved as published. Carried Unanimously On a motion, the Group entered Executive Session to discuss 2019-1 Approval of Resolution to 2019-1: Carried Unanimously REPORT FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT: Acting Chief Nayor shared that there was a homicide on July 17th, IPD is still working on it. There was also a stabbing at Amici house on Sunday, the subject survived. IPD is holding a recruitment drive for Police Officers, the filing deadline for applicants is 7/25/19. Please share the recruitment effort with any and all interested parties. There have been renovations and improvements happening at the Ithaca Police Department building, including working on gender neutrality throughout. AC Nayor also stated that he had a meeting with Pledge for Ithaca- a sexual assault awareness. Group. They are working on a PSA regarding sexual assaults, partnering with them to give more connection on importance of awareness. AC Nayor is now on the Tompkins County anti-bullying taskforce, as well as the Workforce Diversity Committee. IPD received several compliments, demonstrated good de-escalation during an incident, and was mentioned in Police Chief Magazine. Commissioner Rogers inquired about the status of the LEAD program, which AC Nayor reports is still being pursued, and meetings with stakeholders are occurring. He will keep the CPB posted. Commissioner Onyejuruwa inquired about restorative justice regarding the April Commons incident. AC Nayor stated that the District Attorney had the lead on restorative justice in this case, and the defendants were presented with the idea, he is not sure if it was accepted. A discussion ensued. AC Nayor shared that he was interviewed by local media regarding the incident, and that his words were only partially represented in print. Commissioner Rogers stated would like a copy of the letter that was sent to the DA on behalf of the Common Council and Mayor regarding the incident. DC Nayor shared that “National Night Out” is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6th, at Conway Park. IPD is also going to go around to various locations in city neighborhoods with ice cream in a community building effort called “Cool off with Cops” ADJOURNMENT: On a motion the meeting adjourned at 5:07 p.m. Respectfully submitted: Melody Faraday, Public Information Specialist
