B.The Wo rk of thi s Secti on shal l incl ude, but not be li mited to , the fo llowi ng: 1.Backfil ling to s ubgrade elevati ons for the fol lowing: a.Sanit ary or st orm water piping. b.Sanitary or storm water structures. c.Utilities. d.Asphal t, conc rete o r bric k paving. 2.Pipe be dding fo r the fo llowi ng: a.Sanit ary or st orm water piping. b.Utilities. 3.Classification of materials. 1.2 SUBMITTALS A.Granular Materials: 1.Granular materials required for filling, backfilling, subbase and other purposes shall be as shown on the Drawings. 2.For each on-site or off-site materials proposed, furnish to Owner a (5) gallon bucket sample of such material for analysis by Owner-retained testing services. 3.No granular materials shall be used on this project for fill, backfill, subbase or other purpose until approval is obtained from the Engineer. 2.0 PRODUCTS 2.1 ON-SITE MATERIALS A.Excavated material shall be derived from excavations necessary to construct the project to the lines and grades specified. If the excavated material on-site is approved for reuse and is suitable, it shall be used for filling or backfilling purposes. B.Select native material is defined as approved on-site material required for fill or backfill purposes, except under structures. Select native material shall be free of all frozen materials, peat, roots, vegetation, ash, trash, debris and rocks or stones greater than 4 inches in size. Material Specifications shall conform to the requirements of the New York State Department of Transport ation (NYSDOT) and s hall conform to the la test NYSDOT Standar d Specificati on. No gravel, sand, crushed stone or run-of-crusher material shall be used for this project until acceptance is obtained from the Engineer, and only material from approved sources shall be used. A certified sieve analysis from the supplier shall be submitted for the Engineer’s acceptance prior to the use of any materials. B.Sand: 1.Sand sh all co nsist of clea n, hard , durab le, unc oated parti cles, free fr om lumps of c lay, trash, snow, ice and all deleterious substances. Crushed Stone Screenings (Stonedust): 1.Screened gravel shall consist of clean, durable gravel free from coatings. Screened gravel may consist of all uncrushed particles and shall be obtained from sources conforming to the requirements for crushed gravel. 2.Screened gravel shall be NYSDOT 1B per Table 2. Limestone material shall be used, and shall be well graded, durable and composed of rock pieces, chips and fines. The amount of fine material shall be sufficient to fill all voids between large stones when the material is compacted. 2.Run-of-crusher shall be NYSDOT Type 2 per Table 4. CORNELL DIVISION 31 - EARTHWORK Ithaca, New York SECTION 31 23 23.13 -BACKF ILL CLARA DICKSON HALL BACKFILL 31 23 23.13 - 4 WASTE & STORM LINE REPLACEMENT DECEMBER 31, 2014 B.Verify that all subsurface installations for the project have been inspected and are ready for backfi lling. 3.2 PREPARATION A.Compact subgrade to density requirements for subsequent backfill materials in accordance with Section 31 23 23.23. B.Cut out soft areas of subgrade not capable of in situ compaction. Backfill with run-of-crusher fill and compact to density equal to or greater than requirements for subsequent backfill material. C.Inspect spaces to be bac kfille d and re move all un suita ble mate rials includ ing shee ting, br acing, forms and debris prior to commencing backfilling operations. 3.3 BACKFILLING A.Backfill areas to required contours, grades and elevations with unfrozen materials. B.Systematically backfill to allow maximum time for natural settlement. Do not backfill over porous, wet, frozen or spongy subgrade surfaces. C.Backfill material shall be inspected prior to placement and all roots, vegetation, organic matter, or other foreign debris shall be removed. Stones larger than 8 inches in any dimension shall be removed or broken. Stones shall not be allowed to form clusters with voids. D.Backfil l materi al shal l not be placed when moist ure con tent i s more tha n two per cent ab ove optimum or is otherwise too high to allow proper compaction. When material is too dry for adequa te compac tion, water s hall be added t o the ex tent ne cessa ry. E.Maint ain opt imum moistur e conte nt of ba ckfill materia ls to at tain r equir ed compac tion de nsity. F.Slope grade away from building minimum 2 inches in 10 feet unless noted otherwise. G.Rough grade all backfilled and filled areas to meet subsequent topsoiling or paving requirements. Make grade changes gradual. Blend slopes into level areas. H.Remove surplus backfill materials from site. I.Leave fill material stockpile areas completely free of excess fill materials. J.Prote ct pla nt lif e, lawn s, and ot her fe ature s remain ing as a po rtion of fina l lands capin g. K.Maintain a stable, dry backfill area at all times. CORNELL DIVISION 31 - EARTHWORK Ithaca, New York SECTION 31 23 23.13 -BACKF ILL CLARA DICKSON HALL BACKFILL 31 23 23.13 - 5 WASTE & STORM LINE REPLACEMENT DECEMBER 31, 2014 3.4 BACKFILL TO SUBGRADE UNDER PAVING AND SIDEWALK A.Backfill above the stonedust level: Under paving or sidewalks, run-of-crusher fill per Table 4 fill to bedding level required for sidewalks or drive reconstruction. Run-of-crusher shall be compact ed to meet H-20 Highway Lo ading. 3.5 BACKFILL TO SUBGRADE UNDER GRASS OR PLANTING AREAS A.Backfill above the stonedust level: Under grassy areas, fill with select native material with no stones larger than 4" and compacted in lifts of 6" to a level 12" below finish grade. Place two, four inch compacted lifts of select native material with no stones larger than 2" in diameter. Fill remaini ng 4" to grade with topsoil imported from off site, prepared according to Sections 32 91 19 and 32 92 00. B.Compact to 90% density modified proctor. 3.6 BACKFILL - STRUCTURES AND VAULTS A.Vaults shall be placed on consolidated #2 stone, suitably consolidated. B.Place geotextile fabric over #2 stone at perimeter of vault excavation. C.Vault shall be backfilled to four feet below grade with run-of-crusher, compacted to 95% in lifts of 6". D.Provide flowable fill to support piping adjacent vaults. See details on drawings. E.In the vici nit y of st eam li ne en tra nces to vau lts , the backf ill belo w ste am lin es sh all be th e same as listed in Section 3.04A above. Under no circumstances shall steam lines be placed into vaults prior to prop er compac tion of backfil l below steam li ne entr y. F.Backfill from 4 feet below grade to grade at vaults shall be as follows: 1.Under paving or sidewalks, compacted run-of-crusher with no stones greater than 2", placed in lifts of 6", compacted to 95%. 2.Under grassy areas, fill with select native material with no stones larger than 4" and compacted in lifts of 6" to a level of 12" below finished grade. Fill 8" with se lect n ative material with no stones greater than 2". Fill top 4" with rolled imported topsoil. 3.7 PROTECTION OF ELECTRICAL AND COMMUNICATIONS UTILITIES A.Provide foamglass insulation as detailed on the Plans. 3.8 TOLERANCES A.Top surface of backfilling under pavement subgrade: ±1 inch from required elevations. B.Top surface of backfilling under paved areas: ±½ inch from required elevation. B.Compaction testing will be performed in accordance with ASTM D1556, ASTM D2922 and with Section 01 40 00. 3.10 PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK A.Prote ct fin ished work. B.Regrade and recompact fills subjected to vehicular traffic. ***END OF SECTION 31 23 23.13***
