SECTION 31 23 16.13 TRENCHING
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A.Drawings and General Provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions
and other Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to work of this Section.
1.2 WORK INCLUDED
A.Provide trench excavation for utilities for this project.

3.0 EXECUTION
3.1 LAYOUT
A.Employ licensed Surveyor to stake out all work. Accurately locate and maintain location of all
drives, paved areas, plantings, utilities, sidewalks, features, etc. Advise Engineer of any
discr epanci es, pri or to co mmencing wor k.
3.2 NOTIFICATION
A.Notify Cornell University and local agencies, such as fire department, police, utility companies,
Dig Safe ly New York, etc., t hat have juri sdict ion pri or to st artin g any work.
3.3 PROTECTION
A.Provide and maintain all temporary barricades, fences, walkways, enclosures, signs and lighting
as may be required to carry on work in a safe and satisfactory manner for the protection of the
public, workmen, pavements, and other installations in the area of operations. See Section 01 01
05.

B.Traffic: Conduct site clearing operations to ensure minimum interference with roads, drives,
walks, and other adjacent occupied or used facilities. Do not close or obstruct drives, walks, or
other occupied or used facilities without permission from Owner. Provide flag persons per
Section 01 01 05.
3.4 EXCAVATION
A.Remove and legally dispose of material encountered to obtain required subgrade elevations.
Special attention to this item is required. Only the material to be used for backfill as select nature
material is to remain on site. Contractor shall remove all other spoil as soon as it is excavated.
Remove any excess select native materials as soon as backfilling is complete.
B.All pavement cuts shall be saw cut. Saw cut pavement to the minimum extent required for proper
installation of the work. Special attention to this item is required.
C.Every attempt has been made to indicate all existing utilities as accurately as possible from
existing surveys, drawings and other data. However, no certification is made or implied herein as
to the accuracy or completeness of this information. Contractor shall exercise extraordinary care
in excavation.
D.All granite curbing encountered under this Project shall be reused. Curbing damaged by
Contractor shall be removed, properly disposed of and replaced with new curbing by Contractor
at no additional cost. All concrete or other curbing encountered under this Project shall be
demolis hed and repla ced wit h granit e curbi ng.
E.Remove existing signs, etc., as required to install new work. Reinstall the signs after the work is
complete or when directed by the Owner or Engineer.
F.Any damage to existing utilities resulting from excavation shall be repaired by the Contractor (at
the option of the Utility Company involved) to the satisfaction of the Utility Company (if any),
the Owner and the Engineer.
G.Contractor shall have flag persons at the site during any and all interruptions to traffic. Drive and
roadway trenches shall be plated and drives and roads fully open to traffic during non-
construction periods. Plates to be of sufficient thickness to support a parked fire truck, City bus,
etc.
H.Shori ng and Bra cing:

during shoring and bracing work. Repair or replace damages to satisfaction of Utility
owner.
2.Provide bracing and shoring as required in excavations, to maintain sides and to protect
adjacent structures from settlement. Comply with regulations and requirement of
authorities having jurisdiction. Maintain shoring and bracing until excavations are
backfilled.
3.Materials: Provide suitable shoring and bracing materials which will support loads
imposed.

4.Shoring: Protect site from caving and unacceptable soil movement. Where shoring is
required, located system to clear permanent construction and to permit forming and
finishing of concrete surfaces. Provide shoring system adequately anchored and braced
to resist earth and hydrostatic pressures.
5.Remove sheeting, shoring and bracing in stages to avoid disturbance to underlying soils
and damage to structures, pavements, facilities, and utilities.
6.Repair or replace adjacent work damaged or displaced through installation or removal of
shori ng and bra cing wor k.
I.The use of explosives is not permitted.
J.Excavation Definition:
1.Common Excavation - “Common excavation” shall include all excavation except “rock
excavation”. All unconsolidated material, rippable rock, loose rock, soft mineral matter,
weathered rock and soft or friable shale which is removable with normal earth
excavation equipment shall be considered “common excavation”. All boulders and
detached pieces of solid rock, concrete, or masonry less than one (1) cubic yard in
volume shall be classified as “common excavation”.
2.Rock Excavation - “Rock excavation” shall include all sound solid masses, layers and
ledges of consolidated rock or mineral matter of such hardness, durability and/or texture
that is not rippable or cannot be excavated with normal earth excavation equipment.
Rock is classified as material that exceeds a standard penetration resistance of 100
blows/2 inches when tested by an independent geotechnical agency, according to ASTM
D1586.
a.Excavated material which is classified as rock and is not shown on the Contract
Documents shall be removed per the unit prices as identified in the Bid Proposal.
3.5 REMOVAL OF WATER DURING CONSTRUCTION
A.Provide and operate all pumps and other equipment necessary to drain and keep all excavations,
trenches and finished subgrades dry during the execution of the work. Channel drainage water
away and dispose of into storm drainage structures and outfalls in a manner approved by the
Engineer and in accordance with City, County and New York State Regulations.
3.6 DISPOSAL OF M ATERIALS
A.The Contractor shall be responsible to dispose of all materials and spoils at a legal disposal site.
