Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Requirements, apply to work of this section. 1.02 SCOPE A. PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATES - MODIFIED SKIMCOAT OVER EXIST B. Ceramic mosaic flooring. C. Ceramic wall tile. D. Thresholds in wall openings. E. Cement backerboard. F. Proprietary shower and waterproofing system. 1.03 REFERENCES A. TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition. 1.04 SUBMITTALS A. Submit shop drawings, product data, and samples under provisions of Section 01 33 00. B. Submit product data, specifications, and instructions for using mortars, adhesives and grouts. C. Workforce Plan and Installer Qualifications 1. Provide list of installers and their qualifications and experience installing ceramic tile using specified Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing System. 2. Provide Workforce Plan describing schedule of installation and projected manpower to complete Work within the Construction Schedule. D. Samples 1. Grout: Submit manufacturer's full range of standard and designated color samples for each type for Architect's selection. E. Closeout Submittals 1. Submit under provisions of Section 01 77 00. 2. Maintenance Data: Include cleaning methods, cleaning solutions recommended, stain removal methods, and polishes and waxes recommended. 1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Single Source Responsibility: 1. Obtain each type and color tile material required from single source. 2. Obtain setting and grouting materials from one manufacturer to ensure compatibility. 3. Furnish a 10 year guarantee from installation material manufacturer. The guarantee is inclusive of installation materials, finish product, and labor. B. Manufacturer Qualifications: 1. Tile: Minimum 10 years experience in manufacture of tile products. 2. Setting Materials: Minimum 10 years experience in manufacture of setting and grout materials specified. C. Installer Qualifications: Specializing in tile work having minimum of 5 years successful documented experience with work comparable to that required for this Project. D. Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing Installer Qualifications: Installers shall demonstrate experience with installation of specified proprietary systems. E. Certifications: 1. Submit "Master Grade Certificate" for each type of ceramic, porcelain, and paver tile in accordance with requirements of ANSI A137.1. 2. Submit manufacturer's certifications that mortars, adhesives, and grouts are suitable for intended use. F. Conform to ANSI - Recommended Standard Specifications for Ceramic Tile - A137.1. G. Conform to TCA Ceramic Tile: The Installation Handbook. 1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Comply with requirements of Section 01 66 00. B. Labeling: Comply with ANSI A137.1. C. Deliver materials in manufacturer's unopened containers, fully identified with name, brand, type, and grade. D. Protect materials from contamination, dampness, freezing, or overheating in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. E. Broken, cracked, chipped, stained, or damaged tile will be rejected, whether built-in or not. F. Protect mortar and grout materials against moisture, soiling, or staining. CU SAS SUMMER 2012 CERAMIC TILING 09 30 00-3 BATHROOM ALTERATIONS 1142 1.07 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Comply with requirements of referenced standards and recommendations of material manufacturers for environmental conditions before, during, and after installation. B. Do not begin installation until building is completely enclosed and HVAC system is operating and maintaining temperature and humidity conditions consistent with "after occupancy" conditions for a minimum of 2 weeks. C. Maintain continuous and uniform building temperatures of not less than 50 degrees F during installation nor more than 100 degrees F. D. Ventilate spaces receiving tile in accordance with material manufacturers' instructions. 1.08 EXTRA MATERIALS A. At completion of project, deliver to Owner one carton extra stock of materials used on project. B. Ensure materials are boxed and identified by manufacturer, type, and color. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 TILE MANUFACTURERS A. American Olean, Dallas, TX, to match existing ceramic tile. 2.02 TILE PRODUCTS, GENERAL A. ANSI Standard for Ceramic Tile: Comply with ANSI A137.1 "American National Standard Specifications for Ceramic Tile" for types, compositions, and grades of tile indicated. 1. Furnish tile complying with "Standard Grade" requirements unless otherwise indicated. B. ANSI Standard for Tile Installation Materials: Comply with ANSI standard referenced with products and materials indicated for setting and grouting. C. Colors, Textures, and Patterns: Where manufacturer's standard products are indicated for tile, grout, and other products requiring selection of colors, surface textures, patterns, and other appearance characteristics, provide specific products or materials complying with the following requirements: 1. Match color, texture, and pattern indicated by reference to manufacturer's standard designations for these characteristics. D. Factory Blending: For tile exhibiting color variations within the ranges selected during sample submittals, blend tile in factory and package accordingly so that tile units taken from one package show the same range in colors as those taken from other packages and match approved sample. Mounting: Where factory-mounted tile is required, provide back-face or edge-mounted tile assemblies as standard with manufacturer unless another mounting method is indicated. 1. Where tile is indicated for installation in swimming pools, on exteriors or in wet areas, do not use back- or edge-mounted tile assemblies unless tile manufacturer specifies that this type of mounting is suitable for these kinds of uses and has been successfully used on other projects. 2.03 CERAMIC TILE A. Ceramic Mosaic Floor Tile: 1. Composition: Impervious Porcelain. 2. Size: 2 by 2 by 1/4 inches. 3. Edge: Cushioned. 4. Finish: Smooth. 5. Colors: a. Sheldon Court: A04, Light Smoke Speckled. b. Clara Dickson: A71, Spearmint. c. Field verify finish and color match to existing. B. Glazed wall tile: 1. Composition: Non-Vitreous. 2. Size: 4-1/4 by 4-1/4 by 5/16 inches nominal. 3. Edge: Cushioned. 4. Finish: Bright and Matte glazed. 5. Colors: a. Sheldon Court: i. Field: 0045, Salt and Pepper, 4 1/4 X 4 1/4. ii. Accent Band: 0040, Storm Gray, 4 1/4 X 4 1/4. b. Clara Dickson: i. Field: 0012, Almond, 4 1/4 X 4 1/4. ii. Accent Band: 0071, Spearmint, 4 1/4 X 4 1/4.Almond. c. Field verify finish and color match to existing. 2.04 STONE THRESHOLD A. General: Provide stone thresholds that are free of cracks, seams, and starts impairing their structural integrity or function, and from a single quarry for each type, variety, color, and quality of stone specified. B. Size and Profile: ADA compliant, as indicated or required to provide transition between finished surface of ceramic tile and that of adjacent finished flooring. Color and Finish: White, honed marble classified Group A per definitions for soundness classification in MIA "Dimension Stone Design Manual IV. 2.05 MORTAR, GROUT, AND ADHESIVE MANUFACTURERS A. Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements herein, provide products from one of the following manufacturers. 1. Laticrete International, Inc., Bethany, CT. 2. Mapei Corporation, Deerfield, FL. 3. Custom Building Products, Seal Beach, CA. 2.06 MORTAR MATERIALS – THIN SET BEDS A. Portland Cement Unmodified; Thin-Set, approved by Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing System Manufacturer for use with their products. 1. Similar to Laticrete 317 Floor and Wall. 2.07 GROUT A. Epoxy grout: Laticrete SpectraLOCK PRO Grout. Color: natural grey. 2.08 CEMENT BACKERBOARD A. Basis of Design: USG Durock or Durock Next Gen. 1. Cementitious Fiber-Mat Reinforced Sheathing: ASTM C 1325, ANSI A118.9, cementitious backer. a. Thicknesses and sizes to suit conditions. 2.09 PROPRIETARY SHOWER AND WATERPROOFING SYSTEM A. Basis of Design: Schluter Systems, LP. 1. Uncoupling membrane: DITRA. a. 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick, orange, high-density polyethylene membrane with grid structure of 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch (12 mm x 12 mm) square cavities, each cut back in dovetail configuration, and polypropylene anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. b. Conform to TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition, and meet or exceed requirements of American national standards specifications for load bearing, bonded, waterproof membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimension stone installation A118.10. Listed by cUPC®, and evaluated by ICC-ES (see Report No. ESR-2467). CU SAS SUMMER 2012 CERAMIC TILING 09 30 00-6 BATHROOM ALTERATIONS 1142 2. Waterproofing membranes: KERDI and KERDI-BAND. a. 0.008 inch (0.2 mm) thick, orange polyethylene membrane with polypropylene fleece laminated on both sides. b. Meet or exceed TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition, and meet or exceed requirements of American national standards specifications for load bearing, bonded, waterproof membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimension stone installation A118.10. Listed by cUPC®, and evaluated by ICC-ES (see Report No. ESR-2467). 3. Prefabricated shower components: a. Shower tray base: KERDI-SHOWER_ST, sizes to suit shower configurations shown on drawings. b. Shower drain: KERDI-DRAIN, stainless steel finish. 4. Floor Drains: KERDI-DRAIN, stainless steel finish. a. Stainless steel floor drain, 9.843 inch (250 mm) diameter integrated bonding flange with 2 inch and 3 inch (75 mm) no-hub outlet and grate assembly. Grate assembly includes type 304 stainless steel grate, height adjustment collar, and lateral adjustment ring with trapezoid perforations. Nominal grate size 4 inch x 4 inch square. b. Drain detail as referenced in method B422 of TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition. c. Coordinate with plumbing work for locations and sizes of floor drains. 5. Accessories: Ramps, movement joints, edge joints and corner trim as required for complete, waterproof installation. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 PRE-INSTALLTION CONFERENCE A. Prior to beginning of tiling work, a Pre-Installation Conference shall be held. B. Attendees shall include Architect, Contractor, Contractor’s Sub-Contractors including Installers, Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing System Manufacturer's representative, Owner's Project Manager. C. Attendees shall review the following topics and make modifications as required. 1. Project schedule and Work implementation. 2. Quality Control and Proprietary Waterproofing System Manufacturer’s inspection schedule. 3. Installer qualifications. 4. Specifications and details. 5. Waterproofing systems and materials. 6. Contractor's proposed sequencing of work. 7. Substrate preparation and related work. 8. Application requirements. CU SAS SUMMER 2012 CERAMIC TILING 09 30 00-7 BATHROOM ALTERATIONS 1142 9. Other factors to be considered, and work to be completed, before tiling installation begins. 3.02 EXAMINATION A. Verify that areas to receive tile installed by thin bed method are true within 1/4 inch in 10'-0", and are pitched to drains where required. B. Air Temperature and Surfaces in Rooms to Receive Flooring: Between 60 degrees to 90 degrees F unless otherwise recommended by manufacturers of materials being installed. C. Condition of Surfaces to Receive Tile: 1. Firm, dry, clean and free of oily or waxy films, mortar and soil. 3.03 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates. B. Wet down or wash dry, dusty surfaces and remove excess water immediately prior to application of tiles. C. Prepare surfaces in strict accordance with instructions of manufacturer whose setting materials or additives are being used. D. Blending: For tile exhibiting color variations within the ranges selected during sample submittals, verify that tile has been blended in factory and packaged accordingly so that tile units taken from one package show the same range in colors as those taken from other packages and match approved samples. If not factory blended, e ither return to manufacturer or blend tiles at Project site before installing. 3.04 PROPRIETARY SHOWER AND WATERPROOFING SYSTEM A. Install in strict accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions. Consult manufacturer’s current technical literature for proper design and installation instructions. 3.05 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Install tile materials in accordance with ANSI A137.1, other referenced ANSI and TCA specifications, and TCA "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation", except for more stringent requirements of manufacturer or these Specifications. B. Cut and fit tile tight to protrusions and vertical interruptions and treat with a compatible sealant as specified in Section 07 92 00. Form corners and bases neatly. C. Work tile joints uniform in width, subject to variance in tolerance allowed in tile size. Make joint watertight, without voids, cracks, excess mortar, or grout. D. Prepare surface, fit, set, bond, grout and clean in accordance with applicable requirements of ANSI standards and Tile Council of America. 3.06 LAYOUT A. Lay out work so that full tile or joint is centered on each wall and no tile of less than half width need be used. Do not interrupt pattern through openings. Lay out tile to minimize cutting and to avoid tile less than half size. B. No staggered joints will be permitted. C. Align joints in tile in both directions. D. Make joints between sheets of tile exactly same width as joints within sheet. E. File edges of cut tile smooth and even. CU SAS SUMMER 2012 CERAMIC TILING 09 30 00-8 BATHROOM ALTERATIONS 1142 F. Extend tile work into recesses and under or behind equipment and fixtures, to form complete covering without interruptions, except as otherwise indicated. Terminate work neatly at obstructions, edges and corners without disrupting pattern or joint alignments. G. Accurately form intersections and returns. 3.07 THINSET METHOD A. Apply mortar or adhesive with notched trowel using scraping motion to work material into good contact with surface to be covered. Maintain 90 percent coverage on back of tile and fully bed all corners. B. Apply only as much mortar or adhesive as can be covered within allowable windows as recommended by mortar or adhesive manufacturer or while surface is still tacky. C. When installing large tiles, ceramics or mosaics, trowel small quantity of mortar or adhesive onto back of each tile or sheet of tiles. D. Set tiles in place and rub or beat with small beating block. E. Beat or rap tile to ensure proper bond and also to level surface of tile. F. Align tile to show uniform joints and allow to set until firm. G. Clean excess mortar or adhesive from surface of tile with wet cheese cloth (not a sponge) while mortar is fresh. H. Sound tile after setting. Replace hollow sounding tiles. 3.08 GROUTING A. Allow tiles to set a minimum of 48 hours before grouting. B. If bonding materials are rapid setting, follow manufacturer’s recommendations. C. Install in accordance with grout manufacturer's recommendations and ANSI A108.10. D. Pack joints full and free before mortar takes initial set. E. Clean excess grout from surface with wet cheesecloth as work progresses. Do not use hydrosponges. F. Cure after grouting by covering with kraft or construction paper for 72 hours. 3.09 MARBLE THRESHOLD A. Provide thresholds at wall or framed openings to other building areas not receiving tile. B. Set one piece threshold in adhesive without voids, full width of door opening. C. Point threshold base flush with adjoining tile floors. D. Cope ends to fit door frame profile. 3.10 ADJUSTING A. Sound tile after setting. Replace hollow sounding units. 3.11 CLEANING A. Clean excess mortar from surface with water as work progresses. Perform cleaning while mortar is fresh and before it hardens on surfaces. B. Sponge and wash tile diagonally across joints. Polish with clean dry cloth. C. Remove grout haze following recommendation of mortar additive manufacturer. Do not use acids for cleaning. CU SAS SUMMER 2012 CERAMIC TILING 09 30 00-9 BATHROOM ALTERATIONS 1142 3.12 PROTECTION A. Prohibit traffic from floor finish for 72 hours after installation. B. Where temporary use of new floors is unavoidable, supply large, flat boards or plywood panels for walkways over kraft paper. C. Protect work so that it will be without any evidence of damage or use at time of acceptance. *** END OF SECTION ***
