Static Coefficient of Friction: Tile on walkway surfaces shall meet or exceed the following values as determined by testing in conformance with ASTM C 1028. 1. Level Surfaces: Minimum of 0.6 (Wet). 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 33 00. Obtain approvals of submittals prior to delivering products to the jobsite. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including: 1. Preparation instructions and recommendations. 2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations. 3. Installation methods. C. Shop Drawings: Indicate tile layout, patterns, color arrangement, perimeter conditions, junctions with dissimilar materials, control and expansion joints, thresholds, ceramic accessories, and setting details. D. Selection Samples: Color charts illustrating full range of colors and patterns. E. Selection Samples: Full-size samples of actual tiles for selection. F. Verification Samples: For tile 8 by 8 inches (203 by 203 mm) and smaller, mount actual units on minimum 12 by 12 inch (305 by 305 mm) plywood panels and grout with selected grout. For larger tile, submit two units of each type, and grout chart indicating selections. G. Manufacturer's Certificate: When applicable, submit a Master Grade Certificate signed by the manufacturer and the installer certifying that products meet or exceed the specified requirements of ANSI A137.1. H. Maintenance Data: Include recommended cleaning methods, cleaning materials, and maintenance coatings. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in performing the work of this section with minimum five years experience. B. Single Source Responsibility: Obtain each type and color of tile from a single source. Obtain each type and color of mortar, adhesive and grout from the same source. C. General: Provide tile that complies with ANSI A137.1 where applicable for types, compositions and other characteristics indicated. Provide tile in the locations and of the types colors and pattern indicated on the Drawings. 1. Factory Blending: For tile exhibiting color variations within the ranges selected under Submittal of samples, blend tile in the factory and package so tile taken from one package shows the same range of colors as those taken from other packages. 2. Mounting: For factory mounted tile, provide back or edge mounted tile assemblies as standard with the manufacturer, unless otherwise specified. 3. Factory Applied Temporary Protective Coatings: Where indicated under tile type, protect exposed surfaces of tile against adherence of mortar and grout by precoating with a continuous film of petroleum paraffin wax applied hot. Do not coat unexposed tile surfaces. D. Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing Installer Qualifications: Installers shall demonstrate experience with installation of specified proprietary systems. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver and store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation. Protect setting materials from freezing or overheating in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. C. Store tile and setting materials on elevated platforms, under cover and in a dry location and protect from contamination, dampness, freezing or overheating. 1.8 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Do not install adhesives in an unventilated environment. Ventilate spaces receiving tile in accordance with material manufacturers' instructions. B. Maintain ambient and substrate temperature of 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) nor more than 100 degrees F (38 degrees C) during tiling and for a minimum of 7 days after completion. 1.9 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Provide for Owner's use a minimum of 2 percent of the primary sizes and colors of tile specified (or minimum of one carton per size and color type), boxed and clearly labeled. Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements herein, provide products from one of the following manufacturers: 1. Laticrete International, Inc., Bethany, CT. 2. Mapei Corporation, Deerfield, FL. 3. Custom Building Products, Seal Beach, CA. 2.4 MORTAR MATERIALS – THIN SET BEDS A. Portland Cement Unmodified; Thin-Set, approved by Proprietary Shower and Waterproofing System Manufacturer for use with their products. 1. Similar to Laticrete 317 Floor and Wall. 2.5 GROUT A. Epoxy grout: Laticrete Spectra LOCK PRO Grout. Color: natural grey. 2.6 CEMENT BACKERBOARD A. Basis of Design: USG Durock or Durock Next Gen. 1. Cementitious Fiber-Mat Reinforced Sheathing: ASTM C 1325, ANSI A118.9, cementitious backer. a. Thicknesses and sizes to suit conditions. 2.7 PROPRIETARY SHOWER AND WATERPROOFING SYSTEM A. Basis of Design: Schluter Systems, LP. 1. Uncoupling membrane: DITRA. a. 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick, orange, high-density polyethylene membrane with grid structure of 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch (12 mm x 12 mm) square cavities, each cut back in dovetail configuration, and polypropylene anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. b. Conform to TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition, and meet or exceed requirements of American national standards specifications for load bearing, bonded, waterproof membranes for thin-set ceramic tile and dimension stone installation A118.10. Waterproofing membranes: KERDI and KERDI-BAND. a. 0.008 inch (0.2 mm) thick, orange polyethylene membrane with polypropylene fleece laminated on both sides. b. Shower tray base: KERDI-SHOWER_ST, sizes to suit shower configurations shown on drawings. b. Shower drain: KERDI-DRAIN, stainless steel finish. 4. Floor Drains: KERDI-DRAIN, stainless steel finish. a. Stainless steel floor drain, 9.843 inch (250 mm) diameter integrated bonding flange with 2 inch and 3 inch (75 mm) no-hub outlet and grate assembly. Grate assembly includes type 304 stainless steel grate, height adjustment collar, and lateral adjustment ring with trapezoid perforations. Nominal grate size 4 inch x 4 inch square. b. Drain detail as referenced in method B422 of TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation by Tile Council of America, latest edition. c. Coordinate with plumbing work for locations and sizes of floor drains. 5. Accessories: Ramps, movement joints, edge joints and corner trim as required for complete, waterproof installation. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Acceptability of Surfaces: Inspect surfaces to be tiled to ensure proper bonding can be achieved, and to verify that surfaces are free of curing membranes, oil, grease, wax and dust. B. Substrate Tolerances: Before tiling, inspect surfaces to be tiled to verify that the following tolerances are not exceeded. If tolerances are exceeded, provide specified leveling coat to achieve specified tolerances. 1. Walls: 1/8 inch in 8 feet (3 mm in 2.4 m) for dry-set mortar, epoxy and organic adhesives. 2. Floors: 1/8 inch in 10 feet (3 mm in 3 m) for dry-set mortar and epoxy; 1/16 inch in 3 feet (1.5 mm in 1 m) for organic adhesive. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates. B. Wet down or wash dry, dusty surfaces and remove excess water immediately prior to application of tiles. C. Prepare surfaces in strict accordance with instructions of manufacturer whose setting materials or additives are being used. D. Blending: For tile exhibiting color variations within the ranges selected during sample submittals, verify that tile has been blended in factory and packaged accordingly so that tile units taken from one package show the same range in colors as those taken from other packages and match approved samples. If not factory blended, either return to manufacturer or blend tiles at Project site before installing. E. Layout: Determine locations of control and expansion joints before starting tile work. CORNELL UNIVERSITY SECTION 09 30 00 Ithaca, New York TILE CLARA DICKSON HALL TILE 09 30 00-6 WASTE & STORM LINE ADDENDUM NO. 1 MARCH 05, 2015 REPLACEMENT Layout tile work to minimize cuts less than one-half tile in size. 1. Lay out work so that full tile or joint is centered on each wall and no tile of less than half width need be used. Do not interrupt pattern through openings. Lay out tile to minimize cutting and to avoid tile less than half size. 2. No staggered joints will be permitted. 3. Align joints in tile in both directions. 4. Make joints between sheets of tile exactly same width as joints within sheet. 5. File edges of cut tile smooth and even. 3.3 PROPRIETARY SHOWER AND WATERPROOFING SYSTEM A. Install in strict accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions. Consult manufacturer’s current technical literature for proper design and installation instructions. 3.4 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Install tile materials in accordance with ANSI A137.1, other referenced ANSI and TCA specifications, and TCA "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation", except for more stringent requirements of manufacturer or these Specifications. B. Cut and fit tile tight to protrusions and vertical interruptions and treat with a compatible sealant as specified in Section 07 92 00. Form corners and bases neatly. C. Work tile joints uniform in width, subject to variance in tolerance allowed in tile size. Make joint watertight, without voids, cracks, excess mortar, or grout. D. Prepare surface, fit, set, bond, grout and clean in accordance with applicable requirements of ANSI standards and Tile Council of America. 3.5 THINSET METHOD A. Apply mortar or adhesive with notched trowel using scraping motion to work material into good contact with surface to be covered. Maintain 90 percent coverage on back of tile and fully bed all corners. B. Apply only as much mortar or adhesive as can be covered within allowable windows as recommended by mortar or adhesive manufacturer or while surface is still tacky. C. When installing large tiles, ceramics or mosaics, trowel small quantity of mortar or adhesive onto back of each tile or sheet of tiles. D. Set tiles in place and rub or beat with small beating block. E. Beat or rap tile to ensure proper bond and also to level surface of tile. F. Align tile to show uniform joints and allow to set until firm. G. Clean excess mortar or adhesive from surface of tile with wet cheese cloth (not a sponge) while mortar is fresh. H. Sound tile after setting. Replace hollow sounding tiles. Allow tiles to set a minimum of 48 hours before grouting. B. If bonding materials are rapid setting, follow manufacturer’s recommendations. C. Install in accordance with grout manufacturer's recommendations and ANSI A108.10. D. Pack joints full and free before mortar takes initial set. E. Clean excess grout from surface with wet cheesecloth as work progresses. Do not use hydrosponges. F. Cure after grouting by covering with kraft or construction paper for 72 hours. 3.7 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Cleaning: Clean tile within time period recommended by manufacturer, using materials recommended by manufacturer. B. Protection: Prohibit foot and wheeled traffic from floors for a minimum of 3 days. Where traffic is unavoidable, provide large flat boards in walkways and wheelways for a minimum of 7 days after installation. Protect from construction dirt and debris with heavy-duty, non- staining construction paper, masked in place. C. Clean excess mortar from surface with water as work progresses. Perform cleaning while mortar is fresh and before it hardens on surfaces. D. Sponge and wash tile diagonally across joints. Polish with clean dry cloth. E. Remove grout haze following recommendation of mortar additive manufacturer. Do not use acids for cleaning. END OF SECTION
