Re: Carpenter Hall B05 Systems Engineering Lab Code Compliance
Dear Rob,
On behalf of my Client, Cornell University, I am writing to inform you of the Work plan for sub-grade drainage
at the excavation for the new exterior egress stair, from the Systems Engineering Lab B05 space in the
basement level of Carpenter Hall.
This past week, the contractor performed an exploratory excavation to reveal a) the existing footer drain pipe
indicated on Record Drawings for the building, b) the existing building foundation and footings, and c) the
existing soil conditions in the area of the Work.
The existing footer drain was shown to be damaged, and not at a suitable elevation to work with our new area
rain at the lower concrete landing of the new stair. Given this new information, the plan will be revised to
instead create our own, self-contained drainage solution for the area of Work, by installing new piping that will
lead below the existing interior basement floor slab, and a new sump pit and pump(s) and new piping will be
included to eject any water that collects to tie-in to existing overhead storm drain piping at Meeting Room 06,
on the same basement level. I have included drawing documentation of this design change, for your record.
This change to the Scope of Work will remove any need to excavate beyond what is required to build the new
exterior egress stair, and therefore will not affect egress from the first level of the building to the exterior
courtyard.
Regarding other structural/geotech concerns you have raised in your review of this project, my consulting
structural engineer shall be issuing a separate letter to you to address those concerns.
Thank you.
