Such changes are to be incorporated into the Construction Documents and shall apply to the work with the same meaning and force as if they had been included in the original document. Wherever this Addendum modifies a portion of a paragraph of the specifications or a portion of any Drawing, the remainder of the Paragraph or Drawing shall remain in force. UNIT PRICE SCHEDULE a. The undersigned agrees, if awarded the Contract, to perform work "In addition to" or "deducted from" the scope of the Contract Documents as directed by the Owner and/or Architect, computed in accordance with the unit prices hereinafter listed, which prices include all overhead, profit and other expense items in connection therewith, subject to the terms of the Contract Documents. b. All unit prices include the installation or omission, complete for each item, together with all work in connection therewith and shall include all shoring, bracing, dewatering and other incidental work. c. Unit prices shall be the total compensation for the item and includes all overhead, profit and any other charges of the Contractor and/or subcontractor in connection therewith. d. Attention is directed to the Contract and General Conditions and all Sections of Division 1 – General Requirements which are hereby made a part of the Specifications. B. Examine all Drawings and all other Sections of the Specifications for requirements therein affecting the Work of this Section. C. Coordinate work with that of all other trades affecting or affected by work of the Section. Cooperate with such trades to assure steady progress of all work under the Contract. 1.02 SUMMARY A. Section includes the following applications of stone masonry: 1. Granite Block Wall. 2. Granite Stair Treads. B. Related Sections: 1. Division 31 Section “Earthwork” 2. Division 32 “Cement Concrete” 3. Division 05 “Pipe and Tube Railings” 1.03 SUBMITTALS A. Samples for Verification: 1. For each stone type indicated. Include at least two samples in each set for each type of stone, exhibiting extremes of the full range of color and other visual characteristics expected in completed Work. Photographs are acceptable. B. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer. C. Material Certificates: Include statements of material properties indicating compliance with requirements including compliance with standards and type designations within standards. Provide for each type and size of the following: 1. Granite quarry block. . Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation details for all quarry block. Include dimensions, details of reinforcement and anchorages if any, and indication of finished faces. 1. Include details for coordination with other trades. 1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: The work of this Section shall be performed by Subcontractors who are regularly engaged in similar work. Each subcontractor shall demonstrate to satisfaction of the Landscape Architect that he has successfully performed on comparable projects over the previous five (5) years. 1. Stone Mason Qualifications: Engage an experienced stone mason who has completed dry laid stone work similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful installations. B. Source Limitations for Stone: Obtain stone, regardless of finish, from one quarry with resources to provide materials of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties. C. Mockups: Build mockups to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for materials and execution. 1. Build mockups for granite blocks which are to include at least (2) stone units / blocks as shown on the Layout Plan L201. 2. Approval of mockups is for color, texture, and blending of stone; spacing of joints; and aesthetic qualities of workmanship. 3. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless Landscape Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing. 4. Approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion. D. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. 1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect stone during storage and construction against moisture, soiling, staining and physical damage. B. Handle stone to prevent chipping, breakage, soiling and other damage. Do not use pinch or wrecking bars without protecting edges of stone with wood or other rigid materials. Lift with wide-belt type slings wherever possible: do not use wire rope or ropes containing tar or other substance which might cause staining. If required, use wood rollers and provide cushion at end of wood slides. Protect stonework accessories from weather, moisture and contamination with foreign materials. D. Store aggregates where grading and other required characteristics can be maintained and contamination avoided. 1.06 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Protection of Stone Masonry: During construction, cover tops of walls, projections, and sills with waterproof sheeting at end of each day's work. Cover partially completed stone masonry when construction is not in progress. B. Cold-Weather Requirements: Do not use frozen materials or materials mixed or coated with ice or frost. Do not build on frozen substrates. Remove and replace stone masonry damaged by frost or freezing conditions. Comply with cold-weather construction requirements contained in ACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMS 602. C. Hot-Weather Requirements: Comply with hot-weather construction requirements contained in ACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMS 602. 1.07 COORDINATION A. Advise installers of other work about specific requirements for placement of reinforcement, veneer anchors, flashing, and similar items to be built into stone masonry. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 GRANITE A. Varieties and Sources: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide stone of the following variety and from the following sources: 1. Swenson Granite. 2. Granite Importers. 3. Approved equivalent. B. Description: Heavy wall stone. 1. Stone Variety: Jet Mist or approved equivalent 2. Height: 28” 3. Width: 24”. 4. Length: See Layout Plans. 5. Finish: Sawn and thermalled ends, top and sides. C. Do not use stone units with chips, cracks, voids, stains or other defects which might be visible in the finished work. Patching or hiding defects in stone will not be permitted. Varieties and Sources: Provide Jet Mist granite treads or approved equivalent. 1. Swenson Granite. 2. Granite Importers. 3. Approved equivalent. 2.03 FABRICATION OF STONE A. Fabricate stone to comply with sizes, shapes, and tolerances recommended by applicable stone association or, if none, by stone source, for faces, edges, beds, and backs. B. Cut stone to produce pieces of thickness, size, and shape indicated, including details on Drawings. Dress joints (bed and vertical) straight and at right angle to face unless otherwise indicated. C. Carefully inspect stone at quarry or fabrication plant for compliance with requirements for appearance, material, and fabrication. Replace defective units before shipment. 1. Clean stone to remove rust stains and iron particles. D. Shape stone for type of masonry as follows: 1. As detailed. E. Finish exposed faces and edges of stone to comply with requirements indicated for finish and to match approved samples and mockups. F. Do not use stone units with chips, cracks, voids, stains or other defects which might be visible in the finished work. Patching or hiding defects in stone will not be permitted. 2.04 MORTAR MATERIALS A. Portland Cement: ASTM C 150, Type I or Type II, except Type III may be used for cold- weather construction. B. Hydrated Lime: ASTM C 207, Type S. C. Sand: ASTM C 144. D. Aggregate: ASTM C 144. Latex Additive: Acrylic-resin water emulsion recommended by additive manufacturer for use with field-mixed portland cement mortar bed. F. Water: Potable. 2.05 GROUT A. Grout Colors: 1. Contractor to provide full range of colors for selection. B. Polymer Modified Cement Grout: ANSI A118.7. 1. Polymer Type: Acrylic resin in liquid-latex form for addition to prepackaged dry- grout mix. 2.06 JOINT SEALANT A. Polyurethane Sealant: Single-component, non-sag, high performance, non-priming, gun- grade elastomeric polyurethane sealant, ASTM C920, Type S, Grade NS, Class 25, Use T, NT, M, A, G, and O. Canadian Specification CAN/CGSB-19.13-M87, Classification MCG-2-25-A-N, No. 81026; UL classified (fire resistance): 1. Acceptable Product: Sonolastic® NP 1 tm by BASF Building Systems. 2. Approved equivalent. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Examine surfaces indicated to receive stone masonry, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance. Notify the Landscape Architect of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. C. Review installation procedures and coordinate with other work, and with other subcontractors whose work will be affected by the stonework. FOUNDERS HALL QUARRY BLOCK 04 43 05- 5 BATHROOM RENOVATIONS STONE CORNELL DIVISION 4 MASONRY Ithaca, New York SECTION 04 43 05 QUARRY BLOCK STONE 3.02 PREPARATION A. Clean dirty or stained stone surfaces by removing soil, stains, and foreign materials before setting. Clean stone by thoroughly scrubbing with fiber brushes and then drenching with clear water. Use only mild cleaning compounds that contain no caustic or harsh materials or abrasives. 3.03 SETTING OF STONE, GENERAL A. Perform necessary field cutting and trimming as stone is set. 1. Use power saws to cut stone that is fabricated with saw-cut surfaces. Cut lines straight and true, with edges eased slightly to prevent snipping. B. Set stone to comply with requirements indicated on Drawings. Set stone accurately in locations indicated with edges and faces aligned according to established relationships and indicated tolerances. 3.04 CONSTRUCTION TOLERANCES A. Variation from Level: Do not exceed 1/4 inch in 20 feet (6 mm in 6 m) or 1/2 inch in 40 feet (13 mm in 12 m) or more. B. Joint Widths: 1. Quarry block walls: Lay walls with joints not less than 1/4 inch at narrowest points or more than ½ inch at widest points. 3.05 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Saturate concrete base with clean water several hours before placing setting bed. B. Apply mortar bed over bond coat immediately after applying bond coat. Spread and screed setting bed to uniform thickness at subgrade elevations required for accurate setting of treads to finished grade, C. Mix and place only that amount of mortarbed that can be covered with treads before initial set. Cut back, bevel edge, remove and discard setting bed material that has reached initial set before placing treads. D. Place treads before initial set of cement occurs E. Tamp or beat treads and cope with a wooden block or rubber mallet to obtain full contact with the setting bed and to bring finished surfaces within indicated tolerances. Set each tread in a single operation before initial set of mortar; do not return to areas already set or disturb tread for purposes of realigning finished surfaces. F. Caulk stair as soon as possible after initial setting bed. FOUNDERS HALL QUARRY BLOCK 04 43 05- 6 BATHROOM RENOVATIONS STONE CORNELL DIVISION 4 MASONRY Ithaca, New York SECTION 04 43 05 QUARRY BLOCK STONE 3.06 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Remove and replace stone masonry of the following description: 1. Broken, chipped, stained, or otherwise damaged stone. Stone may be repaired if methods and results are approved by Architect. 2. Defective joints. 3. Stone masonry not matching approved samples and mockups. 4. Stone masonry not complying with other requirements indicated. B. Replace in a manner that result in stone masonry matching approved samples and mockups, complying with other requirements, and showing no evidence of replacement. 3.07 EXCESS MATERIALS AND WASTE A. Excess Stone: Remove all excess stone from Owner’s property. B. Disposal as Fill Material: Not allowed. C. Excess Masonry Waste: Remove excess masonry waste and other waste, and legally dispose of off Owner's property. 3.08 INSTALLATION OF JOINT SEALANTS A. General: Comply with joint-sealant manufacturer's written installation instructions for products and applications indicated, unless more stringent requirements apply. B. Sealant Installation Standard: Comply with recommendations in ASTM C 1193 for use of joint sealants as applicable to materials, applications, and conditions indicated. C. Install sealant backings of type indicated to support sealants during application and at position required to produce cross-sectional shapes and depths of installed sealants relative to joint widths that allow optimum sealant movement capability. 1. Do not leave gaps between ends of sealant backings. 2. Do not stretch, twist, puncture, or tear sealant backings. 3. Remove absorbent sealant backings that have become wet before sealant application and replace them with dry materials. D. Install sealants using proven techniques that comply with the following and at the same time backings are installed: 1. Place sealants so they directly contact and fully wet joint substrates. 2. Completely fill recesses in each joint configuration. Produce uniform, cross-sectional shapes and depths relative to j oint widths that allow optimum sealant movement capability. E. Install sealants using proven techniques that comply with the following and at the same time backings are installed: F. Tooling of Non-sag Sealants: Immediately after sealant application and before skinning or curing begins, tool sealants according to requirements specified below to form smooth, uniform beads of configuration indicated; to eliminate air pockets; and to ensure contact and adhesion of sealant with sides of joint. 1. Remove excess sealant from surfaces adjacent to joints. 2. Use tooling agents that are approved in writing by sealant manufacturer and that do not discolor sealants or adjacent surfaces. 3. Provide concave joint configuration per Figure 5A in ASTM C 1193, unless otherwise indicated. 3.09 PROTECTION A. Prohibit all traffic from installed stone for a minimum of 72 hours. B. Protect during construction with non-staining kraft paper, and cover with a layer of untreated plywood where adjoining areas require construction work access. ***END OF SECTION *** FOUNDERS HALL QUARRY BLOCK 04 43 05- 8 BATHROOM RENOVATIONS STONE CORNELL DIVISION 8 DOORS & WINDOWS Ithaca, New York SECTION 08 71 00 DOOR HARDWARE FOUNDERS HALL DOOR HARDWARE ADD 1 08 71 00-1 BATHROOM RENOVATIONS 1628 PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General Requirements, apply to work of this section. 1.02 SCOPE A. Finish hardware supplier shall furnish and install: 1. All finish door hardware as indicated and/or herein specified. 2. Hardware schedule and templates. 3. Shop drawings. 4. Keying, construction master keying. 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Single Source Responsibility: Obtain each type of hardware from single manufacturer. B. Supplier: Recognized architectural door hardware supplier, with warehousing facilities in Project’s vicinity, that has record of successful in-service performance for supplying door hardware similar in quantity, type, and quality to that indicated for this Project; that employs experienced architectural hardware consultant who is available for consultation during course of project, and will meet with Owner to confirm keying requirements and obtain final instructions. C. Installer: Use only experienced tradesmen assigned to install hardware. 1.04 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS A. All hardware provided for fire-rated openings shall be certified compliant with NFPA 80 and local building codes. B. All locksets shall be certified compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS), and with applicable standards published by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). 1.05 HARDWARE SCHEDULE A. Architect's drawings and specifications indicate intent and scope. Hardware subcontractor shall be responsible for material and item coordination for each door. B. Hardware schedule shall be submitted as follows: Master list of items indicating hardware item number, description and manufacturer's reference, printed sheets complete in same manner as Architect's indicating each door and item of hardware to be applied to door. 1.06 KEYING AND KEY CONTROL A. Definitions 1. Construction Key: Key used during construction before occupancy by construction personnel. FOUNDERS HALL DOOR HARDWARE ADD 1 08 71 00-2 BATHROOM RENOVATIONS 1628 2. Master Key: Operates all locks in portion of system assigned to it. 3. Grand Master Key: Operates all locks in system, including possibly several master keyed systems. 4. Great Grand Master Key: Operates all locks in an area or college, including master and grand master keyed systems. B. Place all keying and key orders with approval of Owner's Representative. C. Furnish and deliver, directly to Owner Representative: 1. Cylinder Locks: Three (3) each. 2. Master Keys: Two per tenant space, total four (4). 3. Grand Master Keys: Three (3) total. 4. Great-Grand Master Keys: Three (3) total. 5. Construction Master Keys: Twenty (20) total. 6. Cylinder Lock Change: Twenty (20) for each different keyway. D. Obtain signed receipt for hand delivered items, or forward by registered mail in safety envelopes addressed by Owner's Representative. E. Keys shall be suitable for master, grand master, great-grand master and construction keying within Owner's existing system. F. Keys shall be identified per coding of building, with change number, and stamped “DO NOT DUPLICATE” as directed by Owner's Representative. G. Locks that are construction master keyed shall have all keys except construction master keys mailed directly to building coordinator. H. Keys shall be part of restricted keyway system available only through Owner's Representative. I. Deliver keys to Owner’s Representative. 1.07 FINISH SYMBOLS A. Finish symbols refer to ANSI/BHMA Finish Numbers. 1.08 SHOP DRAWINGS AND PRODUCT DATA A. Submit shop drawings and product data in accordance with General Requirements. 1. Indicate locations and mounting heights of each type of hardware. 2. Supply templates to door and frame manufacturers to enable proper and accurate sizing and locations of cutouts for hardware. 3. Location of Hardware a. Door knobs centered 38" above finished floor. b. Upper edge of top hinge 5" below head of frame. c. Lower edge of bottom hinge 10" above finished floor. d. Space center hinges equal distances between top and bottom hinge. e. Push plates centered 40" above floor. f. Cylinder deadlocks centered 48" above floor. g. Push bars centered 41" above floor. h. Submit sample of each different type for written approval of Architect before delivery. Approved samples can be used on project. 1.09 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE DATA A. Comply with requirements of General Requirements Sections 01 78 23, 01 78 36 and 01 78 39 including submission of operating and maintenance instructions. B. Furnish three (3) complete sets of specialized tools for Owner’s continued adjustment, maintenance, and removal and replacement of door hardware. 1.10 PROJECT/SITE CONDITIONS A. Package and tag each item separately with identification related to final hardware schedule, and include installation instructions with each item or package. B. Provide secure lock-up for hardware delivered to Project but not yet installed. Control handling and installation of hardware items that are not immediately replaceable so that completion of project will not be delayed by hardware losses before or after installation. C. Existing Conditions: Furnish hardware items of proper design for use on doors and frames of thicknesses, profile, swing, security and similar requirements, as necessary for proper installation and function. 1. Separate differing materials with dividers or stockpile apart to prevent mixing. D. Direct surface water away from stockpile site so as to prevent erosion or deterioration of ma-terials. 3.04 EXCAVATION A. Excavation is unclassified and includes excavation to subgrade elevations indicated, regardless of character of materials and obstructions encountered. B. Unauthorized excavation consists of removal of materials beyond indicated subgrade eleva-tions or dimension without specific direction of Geotechnical Engineer. Unauthorized excavation, as well as remedial work directed by Geotechnical Engineer, shall be at Contractor's expense. 1. Under footings, foundation bases, or retaining walls, fill unauthorized excavation by ex-tending indicated bottom elevation of footing or base to excavation bottom, without al-tering required top elevation. Lean concrete fill may be used to bring elevations to proper position, when acceptable to Geotechnical Engineer. 2. Elsewhere, backfill and compact unauthorized excavations as specified for authorized excavations of same classifications, unless otherwise directed by Geotechnical Engineer. Additional Excavation: When excavation has reached required subgrade elevations, notify Geotechnical Engineer who will make an inspection of conditions. 1. If unsuitable bearing materials are encountered at required subgrade elevations, carry excavations deeper and replace excavated material as directed by the Geotechnical Engineer. Excavation of unsuitable material must extend laterally beyond the edge of the footing or slab for a distance equal to or greater than the required depth of the excavation. 2. Removal of unsuitable material and its replacement as directed will be paid on basis of contract conditions relative to changes in work. D. Perform excavation with drip line of large trees to remain by hand, and protect the root sys-tem from damage or dryout to the greatest extent possible. Maintain moist condition for root system and cover exposed roots with burlap. Paint root cuts of one (1) diameter and larger with emulsified asphalt tree paint. E. Rock Excavation: 1. Excavate and remove rock by mechanical method. Utilize hydraulic ramming equipment to fracture rock. 2. Provide uniform surface for placement of structure or utility bedding material. 3. Excavate to 6 inches below pipe barrel invert and a minimum 6 inches beneath outside diameter of bell and spigot pipe joints. 4. Correct areas of utility trench over-excavated with compacted bedding material. 5. Provide bedding material of the type and depth specified for the utility and in accordance with the Drawings. 6. Remove all excavated rock material from the site. Dispose of excavated rock material at a site designated by the Owner. F. Stability of Excavations: Slope sides of excavations to comply with local codes and ordinances having jurisdiction. Shore and brace where sloping is not possible because of space re-strictions or stability of material excavated. Maintain sides and slopes of excavations in safe condition until completion of backfilling. The employment of a Professional Engineer (PE), hired by the Contractor, is required to assess and stabilize all existing conditions prior to demolition. G. Shoring and Bracing: Provide materials for shoring and bracing, such as sheet piling, uprights, stringers, and cross braces, in good serviceable condition. 1. Establish requirements for trench shoring and bracing to comply with local codes and au-thorities having jurisdiction. 2. Maintain shoring and bracing in excavations regardless of time period excavations will be open. Carry down shoring and bracing as excavation progresses. 3. Structurally shore and/or brace any element that is destabilized by adjacent demolition. Dewatering: Prevent surface water and subsurface or ground water from flowing into excavations and from flooding project site and surrounding area. 1. Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations. Remove water to prevent softening of foundation bottoms, undercutting footings, and soil changes detrimental to stability of subgrades and foundations. Provide and maintain pumps, well points, sumps, suction and discharge lines, and other dewatering system components necessary to convey water away from excavations. Maintain water levels below base of excavation to control hydrostatic pressure on subgrade soils. 2. Establish and maintain temporary drainage ditches and other diversion outside excava-tion limits to convey rain water and water removed from excavations to collecting or run-off areas. Do not use trench excavations as temporary drainage ditches. Provide temporary erosion and sediment control. 3. Do not discharge sediment laden water into the adjoining storm or sanitary sewer system or open swales. Pump sediment laden water from excavations into a portable sediment tank or a high-strength, non-woven geotextile fabric bag. Size portable sediment tanks in accordance with the New York Guidelines for Urban Erosion and Sediment Control. I. Material Storage: Stockpile satisfactory excavated materials where directed until required for backfill or fill. Place, grade and shape stockpiles for proper drainage. 1. Locate and retain soil materials away from edge of excavations. Do not store within drip line of trees indicated to remain. 2. Dispose of excess soil material and waste materials not re-used. 3.05 OPEN EXCAVATION A. Excavate topsoil or gravel from areas to be further excavated or re-graded. B. Stockpile topsoil in area designated on-site to be reused. C. Excavate subsoil required to accommodate site and roadway grades. D. Machine slope banks to angle of repose or less, until shored. E. Grade top perimeter of excavation to prevent surface water from draining into excavation. F. Notify Geotechnical Engineer of unexpected subsurface conditions and discontinue affected Work in area until notified to resume work. G. Correct areas over-excavated with structural fill. H. Pile excavated material in manner that will not endanger the Work and that will avoid ob- structing drives, temporary ditches or natural water courses, or create erosion or landslide hazards. I. Grading Outside Building Lines: Establish subgrade adjacent to building lines to drain away from structures and to prevent ponding. 1. Lawn or Unpaved Areas: Finish areas to receive topsoil to within not more than 1-1/2” above or below required subgrade elevations. 2. Pavements: Plus or minus 1/4 inch (13 mm). 3.07 BACKFILLING TRENCHES AND UTILITY STRUCTURES A. Backfill excavated areas under existing and proposed pavements, including driveways to sub-grade elevations with structural fill. Place backfill from top of bedding material to pavement subgrade in maximum 8 inch lifts, each lift compacted at or above 95 percent maximum density. B. Place drain tile and backfill excavated building foundation trenches with drainage stone to the elevation indicated in the plans. Consolidate stone to eliminate voids by spreading and tamping with a backhoe or using hand tools. C. Backfill excavated areas adjoining structures up to subgrade elevation with structural fill unless shown otherwise on Drawings. Place backfill in maximum 6 inch lifts, each lift compacted at or above 95 percent maximum density. D. E. Backfill excavated areas under lawns or improved areas to topsoil subgrade with select fill. Place backfill from top of bedding material to topsoil subgrade in maximum 12 inch lifts, each lift compacted at or above 92 percent maximum density. F. Employ placement and compaction methods that do not disturb or damage adjacent work. G. Maintain optimum moisture content of backfill material to attain required compaction density. H. Do not backfill with frozen material or where the material already in the excavation is frozen. I. Remove surplus backfill materials from site. Ground Surface Preparation: Remove vegetation, debris, unsatisfactory soil materials, ob-structions, and deleterious materials from ground surface prior to placement of fills. Plow, strip, or break up sloped surfaces steeper than one (1) vertical to four (4) horizontal so that fill material will bond with existing surface. 1. When existing ground surface has a density less than that specified break up ground sur-face, pulverize, moisture condition to optimum moisture content, and compact to re-quired depth and percentage of maximum density. Place embankment fill material in maximum 6 inch horizontal lifts. Spread wet embankment fill in 8 inch loose lift and disc to expedite air drying. Remove rock particles larger than 4 inches. B. Adjust moisture content of embankment fill material to within 2 percent of optimum by either air drying or addition of water prior to compaction. C. Compact embankment fill with a smooth drum compactor weighing at least 30 tons and oper-ating in the vibratory mode. 3.09 AGGREGATE COURSES FOR PAVEMENTS A. Verify that subgrade has been compacted to specified density and tested prior to placing geotextile. B. Place soil stabilization fabric on prepared subgrade in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Remove rocks and other objectionable material that could puncture the fabric. C. Maintain grades, elevations and cross-slopes of aggregate base courses for proposed pave-ments, as shown on the Drawings. D. For proposed asphalt concrete pavements, construct base course to the compacted thickness shown on the Drawings. E. Place aggregate materials in layers of uniform thickness conforming to indicated cross- section and thickness. Maintain optimum moisture content for compacting base course during placement. F. Compact aggregate materials with a smooth drum compactor weighing at least 30 tons and operating in the vibratory mode. When a base course is more than 6 inches thick, place material in equal layers, except no single layer more than 6 inches or less than 3 inches in thickness when compacted. G. Use mechanical tamping equipment in areas inaccessible to drum compactor. Test roll aggregate base course with fully-loaded, ten-wheeled dump truck weighting at least 18 tons prior to placing asphalt concrete pavements. 3.10 COMPACTION A. General: Control soil compaction during construction providing minimum percentage of density specified for each area classification indicated below. B. Percentage of Maximum Density Requirements: Compact soil to not less than the following percentages of maximum dry density as determined in accordance with ASTM D698. 1. Pavements: Compact top twelve (12) inches of subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material to ninety-five (95) percent maximum dry density, at +/- 2% of its optimum moisture content. 2. Landscape areas: Compact top twelve (12) inches of subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material to ninety-two (92) percent maximum dry density. C. Moisture Control: Where subgrade or layer of soil material must be moisture conditioned before compaction, uniformly apply water to surface of subgrade or layer or soil material, to prevent free water appearing on surface during or subsequent to compaction operations. 1. Remove and replace, or scarify and air dry, soil material that is too wet to permit compaction to specified density. 2. Soil material that has been removed because it is too wet to permit compaction may be stockpiled or spread and allowed to dry. Assist drying by discing, harrowing or pulverizing until moisture content is reduced to within + 2% of its optimum moisture content. 3.11 DISPOSAL OF UNSUITABLE AND EXCESS EXCAVATED MATERIAL A. Load, remove, and dispose of all unsuitable and excess excavated material. Cover all loads leaving the site and using public highways. B. Construction debris, trash, and any other objectionable solid waste regulated by 6 NYCRR Part 360, will not be permitted to be buried on the project site. 3.12 TOLERANCES A. Excavation for Utility Structures and Trenches: Within plus or minus 2 inches. B. Top Surface of Backfilling: Within plus or minus 1 inch. C. Top Surface of Aggregate Base Course: Within 1/2 inch. Cross-slope within 1/4 inch when measured with a 10 foot straightedge. Compaction testing of embankment fill, aggregate base course and backfill materials will be performed by Owner’s Geotechnical Engineer in accordance with ASTM D698, Standard Proc-tor. B. If tests indicate Work does not meet specified requirements, remove Work, replace, compact, and retest. C. Seal compacted fill surfaces at the end of each construction day. Slope grade such that surface water will not pond adjacent to original excavation. D. Provide UL certificate for any repairs made to underground electric service damaged by Con-tractor operations. 3.14 PROTECTION A. Protect excavations by methods required to prevent cave-in or loose soil from falling into ex-cavation. B. Protect bottom of excavations and soil adjacent to and beneath structures, from freezing. C. Protect, support and maintain all underground and surface structures to remain and other obstructions encountered. Restore structures which may have been disturbed. D. Encase all existing underground gas, electric, telephone, and cable utilities exposed during construction in cushion sand during backfilling of excavated areas. E. Where completed compacted areas are disturbed by subsequent construction operations or adverse weather, scarify surface, reshape and compact to required density prior to further construction. F.
