HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-CPB-2018-06-27CITY OF ITHACA COMMUNITY POLICE BOARD MINUTES Regular Meeting 3:30 p.m. June 27, 2018 Present: Chair: Kane Commissioners (4) Rogers, Onyejuruwa, DaGrossa, Beem-Miller Others Present: Deputy Chief Monticello Public Information Specialist Faraday Excused: Common Council Liaison - Kerslick Absent: Commissioner Wright Call to Order: 3:56p.m. Approval of the May 23, 2018 Community Police Board Meeting Minutes- Resolution: By Commissioner DaGrossa: Seconded by Commissioner Rogers RESOLVED, That the minutes of the May 23, 2018 Community Police Board meeting be approved as published. Carried Unanimously Report from the Police Department: Deputy Chief Monticello reported that the Ithaca Police Department has been busy interviewing to fill vacancies. IPD hired 3 new officers: Dakotah Babcock, Jacob vonHahmann, and Zachary Dorn.They will be sworn in on July 5, 2018 and will start Police academy in Syracuse on July 9, 2018. They are presently interviewing for another Deputy Chief and should have more information in the next couple of weeks. Jo Flomerfelt is retiring at the end of the month; her replacement will be announced soon. Financial clerk Dianne McFall retired, and her position is in interviews. Deputy Chief Monticello will ask Jo Flomerfelt to send along Seniority list for IPD after the new hires are made. Chair Kane inquired about the decrease in complaints- is this because people with complaints are going directly to the Police Department? Deputy Chief Monticello stated that the IPD receives a consistent amount of complaints and reviews- about 40 per year. He described the process the Police Department goes through when they receive a direct complaint, the Commissioners discussed ways to increase the presence of the Community Police Board and let citizens who have a complaint know that the CPB is an option. He also stated that a decrease in complaints and issues concerning the Community Police Board was hopefully due to the preventative measures that IPD has taken regarding staff training. Report from Staff: Melody Faraday reported that PSIC Chair Davi Mozie is unable to attend this meeting, she will try to make it next month. New Business: Two new compliments were received for IPD. The compliments were internal and did not receive an individual letter. Old Business: A discussion as held about West Village- are there any new programs in the works to replace the Office Next Door program or otherwise? Deputy Chief Monticello relayed that it is a difficult situation and that the officers do community outreach in the area, but resources are limited. Report from Common Council: No report as Common Council Liaison was unable to attend. MOTION TO ENTER INTO EXECUTIVE SESSION TO DISCUSS ACTIVE INVESTIGATIONS: A Motion to enter Executive Session was made by Beem- Miller, Seconded by Rogers.
