APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Approval of the June 4, 2018 Public Safety & Information Commission Minutes
By Commissioner Spadolini: Seconded by Commissioner Holmes
RESOLVED, That the minutes of the June 4, 2018 Public Safety & Information
Commission meeting be approved as published.

Chair Jackson discussed her new role as Public Safety and Information Commission
Chair and asked the Commissioners to consult the Commission book that they received
to refresh on process and procedure. The Commission Work Plan template was
reviewed and discussed.
Meeting dates were discussed and confirmed. Meetings are held on the first Monday of
each month. In the event of a Monday holiday, the meetings will be held on the following
Thursday.
Public Safety/ Information:
Tammy Baker, Community Outreach Worker, and her intern Elie Kirshner made a
presentation on the Community Outreach program. They provided an overview of the

role of Community Service Outreach Worker and what the job entails; areas served;
triumphs and challenges of the work; and possible expansions of the program.
Discussion and questions from the Commissioners included how this work correlates
with crime reduction, their relationship with the Police Department, and funding for the
program.
The Commissioners noted that they would like to be notified in the future if this program
could benefit from the support of the Public Safety and Information Commission.
Council members Gearhart and Smith will report back if the Community Outreach
Worker program comes up in Common Council budget discussions and a need is
identified for a recommendation or support.
Chair Jackson mentioned that Commissioner Hayton has developed a presentation on
the concept of utilization of Peace Officers, which will be placed on a future agenda for
further discussion.
Discussion- Work Plan Creation:
Commissioners discussed how to populate the 2018 Work Plan. Budgeting information
is scheduled to be presented at the September meeting.
A need for more information regarding Emergency Response plans was identified.
Commissioners requested to hear from Department Heads regarding their needs and
concerns regarding matters of Public Safety and Information.
A number of conversations regarding matters of potential Commission concern took
place, among topics were distribution of city news topics via listservs and other
methods, the varying opinions among residents regarding listservs, and the difficulty
gauging the effectiveness of these tools.
After a brief discussion about Emergency Preparedness, Chief Parsons spoke to the
Commission regarding moving forward with how to interact within the City’s existing
emergency response systems.
More information about the City’s emergency management operations will be presented
at a future meeting.
